Welcome to the Deep Freeze (2 Viewers)

I'm sorry to hear that George. I've done that twice, very upsetting. Here's one of ours who has passed on, James.

I'm sorry to hear about your pet George. They are members of the family, and putting one down is heartbreaking. I miss my old dog Bjorn every day.

Love Tiger cats...................what a gut punch, holding her and waiting for her to take her last breath, I didn't want her to die alone.

She lost weight over the past month or so which was a bad sign, then she stopped eating two days ago and I had a bad feeling.

As the saying goes, she's in a better place, no more pain, no more suffering.

My oldest dog will be 13 next month. His health is good but I know what's coming. Had to put one down 13 years ago and it's horrible. My thoughts are with you George.

Thanks Gary, it sucked; first a ****ing blizzard, then one of my cats dies...........these things come in threes, right?

Here's my friend that has passed on. Her name was CJ, short for Calamity Jane . . . . She always enjoyed "helping" me with my TS displays. Sorry for your loss George, I know how you feel . . . it was rough on me too.

Made it through the Blizzard of 2018..............we got 16 inches here; as Larry said, bare spots on the parking lot followed up by 4 and 5 foot drifts in between the vehicles...................woke up at 7:30, left the house at 8:30, walked down my shoveled walkway into the plowed parking lot thanks to the condo association, swept the snow off my jeep and off I went.

Roads were bone dry, MA DPW did an outstanding job, down to the asphalt, clear sailing except for the occasional clambrain in the middle lane with his/her flashers on going 40MPH with a death grip on the steering wheel................Jesus; if you are THAT terrified of driving in winter, then stay home or take public transportation.

Packed and shipped my orders from my building, then came home on those same bone dry roads.

Why the panic on Wednesday wiping out the bread, milk and eggs as you'll be snowed in for ONE whole day.............................

On a down note, had to put down one of my pets today, our 20 year old cat Tia...........she did not go out alone, I was there for her till the end.

Wow that was brutal, never did that before with a pet, but glad I did, I'm a better man for it.

For anyone who does not own a pet, you have no idea what it's like to lose one.

Their love is unconditional, they are innocent creatures who do no harm to anyone or anything.

Ok, back to *****ing about the cold and snow in winter..........................

awwww man...that sucks...I know what it's like to lose a pet...their family...sorry George...

Said it before, will say it again, I am outta here the first chance life allows me. I hate the cold, there is no reason in my mind to have 4 seasons, 3 is just fine, 2 is even better. I will eventually enjoy good SEC or SOUTH SOUTH ACC football at some point in my life, that will be my "Fall".

MD - way too freaking cold this morning, same as Al - we have frigid low temps for us and negative windchills.

TD

We just have the 2 seasons where I live on the coast in South East Queensland, 1) Warm and 2) Not as warm...but still great ^&grin

Sorry to hear of your loss George
I've had to put a couple down too and it is heartbreaking to see them take their last breath. My cats made it through last night. It feels pretty good where they go in but you can tell this weather is wearing them down.

Thanks for the condolences; I didn't want her to die alone in a room with a nurse and a vet there, two total strangers; that said, it's killing me thinking of her lifeless body just laying there, didn't know their eyes don't shut when they pass..................what nut punch.

I was watching the video of the flooding/freezing cars up to the window...

the bomb flood video...

somebody tell me...

why did all the cars have their wipers in the up position and off the windshield?

Sorry to hear about your cat George, that's tough at any time.

After I sold my last house I looked after a friends cat when I rented their house for Two years when they went on an extended road trip around Australia. Isabelle (the cat) went into hiding for Two days and made it clear I wasn't welcome in her home, but eventually we came to an arrangement and grew fond of each other over time. She was 17 years old at the time, she's also a Tiger or Tabby as we call them Downunder, she's now almost 20 and still going strong.

People do that because it's a pain in the *** to clear snow and ice from the windshield with the wipers down, plus if we get a lot of ice, they freeze, so they bend them upwards. The issue with that is in high winds, they can get wrecked, I've never been a fan of that move....................

guess that makes sense...
crappy little rubber wipers are expensive...
I just spent $53 on a pair the other day...
and that wasn't the most expensive pair the auto parts store had...
but dang...
it made a difference...

there was a video tip on the news about cutting a raw onion in half...
and rubbing the windshield down...
the sugar in the onion would keep the snow off it...
but you smell like a band of Gypsys coming down the road...

It is -18 with the wind chill right now in Wisconsin. I stepped outside of our hotel just to see how it felt.

All I can say is wow.

At 7:53 AM this morning, the windchill temp on Mt. Washington, New Hampshire, is -93 F. That's right, NEGATIVE 93 degrees F.{eek3} Don't forget your mittens.:rolleyes2: At the same time, the temp in Germantown is a toasty +7 F (-10 F windchill), so looks like another day of reading, TV, eat, and repeat several times. Stay warm, all you north of the Mason-Dixon as there are 121 million people under the wind chill alert. -- Al

Poor old puss George, I'm sorry to hear about her passing mate.

So I'm relaxing about 3:00 in the afternoon yesterday, awaiting my 50th Birthday Dinner with my family, when a thought occurs to me: with all this snow, and as cold as it is, I better check the outdoor pipes for the sump pumps from my basement. The last time they got blocked by snow and it was really cold, they froze, the pumps burned out, the basement flooded a foot deep with water, the boiler and hot water heater were shorted out, and I had a disaster on my hands. I poked my head down the basement, and sure enough, there was about a half-an-inch of water already. I went outside with my son Alec, who shoveled about a foot of snow off the PVC pipes, and sure enough, they were frozen solid. I called a plumber, but they couldn't get here until between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. today, basically 24 hours later, by which time the basement would be a foot deep, etc. I called another plumber, who was kind enough to suggest that, because it was cheap PVC pipe, and they were going to run new pipe anyway, I might as well cut if off 6 inches from where it came out of my house, so the water could be pumped out. So I went outside with a hacksaw and cut the pipe off as he suggested. It was so cold there was a plug of ice going back into the house. So I put on rubber boots, went down the basement (now flooded about 2 inches deep with water), unplugged the sump pumps and disconnected the PVC Pipe at the first joint inside the house. The pipe was frozen about a foot inside, and I couldn't break out the plug without breaking the pipe. So I grabbed a spare piece of PVC Pipe, cut it to size, stuck it into the joint leading back to the sump pumps, and secured it with Gorilla Duct Tape (it had been glued in, and I didn't have anything else to secure it). I stuck it back through the fitting in the wall so it jutted about two feet outside, and plugged my sump pumps back in. Low and behold they fired right up and a steady stream of water has been spewing out ever since. Needless to say, by the time I had gotten this all done, we had postponed my Birthday dinner at my favorite steakhouse, Bryant & Cooper, until Sunday, and my wife ran out and grabbed us some burgers from the steakhouse (which as anyone who attended past symposiums knows, are awesome). This morning when I checked, the basement was damp, but with no accumulation of flood water, and the water was still spewing out of my makeshift drainage pipe. When the plumber gets here today to run new pipe from the house to the drywell on the lawn, I will ask him to leave me some extra lengths of PVC Pipe and joint compound in the basement. So long as the end of the pipe isn't blocked by snow, and the water is constantly running as it usually is, I think I will be okay, but if it gets blocked by another big snow storm, I can just disconnect the pipe inside the basement, stick a length of pipe in for temporary drainage, they reconnect it after the storm clears, or the weather warms up. The joys of living in the deep freeze!{sm4}

George, really sorry to hear about your loss. My wife and I have had 7 cats over our almost 42 years of marriage and we have had to put 3 of them down due to age/infirmity and it hurt like he** each time. One cat died in my wife's arms as we pulled into the vets parking lot and that one really left a mark. Another died on the operating table. We currently have 2 cats that are doing fine and may well outlive me. Still haven't figured out how not to be hurt when one of our pets has passed. Hang in there. -- Al

Jason, you are getting to experience the life of a true Cheese Head . . . . . from cheese curds, to beer cheese soup, to the extremely cold weather. Have you had a Brandy Old Fashion yet? You might just go back home a GB Packers fan . . .
:smile2: Mike
