This is a good point as his actual 007 Tiger did have Zimmeritt applied to it ! This photo is of Wittman's Tiger after being destroyed....Some claim it was hit by a Typhoon. Judging by the damage I could believe it !
Excellent pic PA, quite an explosion. However in recent years the Typhoon theory has been discounted more and more because of such little evidence to back it up. There were Canadian Fireflies in the area but again because of the fact that some of them were as far as 1500m they too have been discounted. It is now accepted by the Bovington Tank museum and Osprey publishing amongst others the Wittman was terminated by Gunner Joe Ekin of the Northamptonshire Yeomanry in his Firefly from the edge of an orchard firing at about 800m, a much more realistic range to take out a Tiger. Quite Ironic that one of Germany's most prolific Tank aces was taken out by a young man who had only fired around half a dozen shots in anger before that action. The shell Ekin fired ignited the Tigers ammunition which resulted in a huge explosion blowing off the turret. Much as I loathe everything about the Nazi's..not a nice way to go.
Ekin had no idea who he had killed that day for many years after and it has only been in recent years he's come forward. There is a brief but interesting description of the Battle with maps and diagrams in Osprey's Duel Title ' Sherman Firefly v Tiger'.

You forgot one Wayne!
Who Got him: We did!^&grin:wink2:
Actually guys the pic PA posted appears to be the only one in existence that shows the wreckage of Wittmans Tank.It was taken by a French civilian cycling past a year after the action, the Tank still lay there untouched. Wittman and crew must have been blown to pieces in an instant by the Tigers ammo igniting like that, although I understand some remains were found and buried, and then having been forgotten for many years were found again not long ago. I aim to visit this spot on returning there next year so will take some pics, I will also be visiting the spot where the Spitfire shot up Rommel's car in Normandy pretty much ending his career.
