But in the meantime the stationary German troops are alerted. It seems that the party will start at the crossroad to Nijmegen!

Thanks guys for reading and supporting this thread.
Maybe you remember that the Germans had lured the British forces into an ambush. a terrible Panzerschreck, hidden behind the wall, was waiting for armour.
Here is the shot from the garden...{eek3}

Right on target!:mad:

No point in squashing tomorrow nights meal now is there. The new FOB figure with the wheel barrow would make a nice addition to this scene, thanks for sharing, cheers, Robin.

Robin;

I have followed your advice and indeed, the figure is the finshing touch. Here you see Joop Zijlstra with his dog Brutus, just before the Jerries were invading his garden.{sm4}

In this episode of Market GARDEN, we ask from the reader some imagination as the facts are historically a little bit inaccurate: from the middle of nowhere British commandos appear in our Dutch gardens. (Its all the fault of Andy; this figures are too nice to neglect in our would be scenario!:eek:) As compensation we have some Luftwaffe on the German side; also part of a would be battle plan...

The first platoon arrives and in our story the radios are working perfectly!
Our radioman is asking for some urgent backup

DSC_commando1.JPG

The piper isn't frightened at when the mortars fire. He is marching on the tones of "The green hills of home"...

DSC_commando2.JPG

Sgt Ballantine is paving the way

DSC_commando4.JPG

And yeh, finally the radioman can confirm that the backup is arrived and has taken position!{sm4}

From the German side, Hans Schnelleman is running ahead his men. He has to fill the gaps that some retreaters had left.

He is really concerned about the critical situation.
His troops are taking position...

Thank you Cruelios and DM101 for the support of this thread.
The SS Panzers were finally on their way.

First of all some tankdestroyers were sent to the crosspoints.
This Jagdpanzer IV was heading to the south.

Eddy, I have most of the same figures as you, but feel you have a better imagination than I do. The little scenes are neat and highlight your collection to the best. Nice use of so much of your collection as well. Did not see this thread developing to this extent, good for you, lot's of inspiration for the forum members here. Cheers, Robin.

The Americans arrive!

On September 17th 1944 some pathfinders of the 504th Rgt (All-American/82th Airborne Div.) arrived at the bridge in Grave, taking part of the Battle of Nijmegen. The pathfinders were the personal mascot of General Cavin. They landed in the early morning without difficulties. The 520 m bridge was just 2 km in front of them and not well defenced.

DSC_USA3.JPG

The 504th was moving to the bridge. The sergeant was ging to his lads the last instructions. "Well my son, our British fellows have told us that there are no tanks and no heavy guns behind that bridge. So what are you waiting for? ****ed, I want that bridge before noon!"

DSC_USA4.JPG

The British intel was not so accurate as General Bittrich has arrived the bridges with his 9th SS Pz. Div. The brave 504th Rgt will take the first casualties in Nijmegen sector.

DSC_USA7.JPG

Jeeps and ambulances were filling the whole area

Can they take the bridge? I'm afraid thisl not happen before noon!
Come and see next week;)

Eddy

The Nijmegen Bridge

The 504th Rgt was able to take the Grave bridge despite the fierce German resistance. It has taken several hours to clear the area around the bridge. The paras were lucky as SS general Bittrich has not ordered his panzers for a counterstrike. His problem was that he had no more than 30 panzers in Arnhem. The II SS Panzer Corps was recovering and regaining full strenght after the Normandy adventure. Most of his troops were still trainees in Holland and the few vets that left from Normandy were hold in reserve.
In the afternoon of September 18th, about 400 gliders landed with material for the 82th. Division. (Jeeps, light trucks, artillery and lots of ammo)

This was the sign to advance against the Jerries in Nijmegen. Main target was the railroad bridge on the river Waal. The bridge was spotted thoroughly and the paras were surprised about the havoc that the allied artillery and bombings had caused to the city. Only the bridge was saved as much as possible.

In the meantime SS General Bittrich

was reinforced by Lieutenant General Hans von Tettau. He was the trainingscommander in Holland and he managed to bring 7 battalions of green SS troops in the field.
