Gents,
Okay, now WE have to wait 4 years (again) to see if our one nation, under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all will qualify to play at the highest level in soccer in a world wide tournament. This is the FIFA WORLD Cup where the entire WORLD participates in one championship to see which country in the world can take home the trophy to their home country and be consider the best in the world...hence, World Champions. Other than the Olympics, there is no other stage in the world where teams compete in one game in a tournament that means so much to their home country. Why it does not mean so much to us as Americans is beyond me.
We have won battles, Olympic matches, Wars and other competitions where the red, white and blue was at stake. Yet, in this competition there is negative and even critical reception of the game and players when the tournament is playing. I remember when the USA women's team lost to Japan in the Womens FIFA and all the ESPN announcers slagged them by saying they "choked". They were so brutal of their performance and berating them openly on losing the final game against of all opponents the...Japanese. It was as if the media (and public) expected the USA to win and just check it off as a normal daily routine. But, when they lost, good lord they were treated as pariahs. Sadly, the USA women's Team are the least paid and supported team compared to other countries and the same rings too with the USA Mens National team.
Yes, they get paid professionally, but this is not about money. Ask those players from Ghana and the Honduras. Those players play for their country AS their job as their responsibility to represent their country. It is a completely different mindset and the hopes, dreams or drama of a country is put to the forefront (or side) when the matches are played. It is the a National game of pride. Here is the USA, it is not. It is kinda of looked down upon as "too long" and confusing-boring and "I just don't understand". Well, I will take a moment to school you here.
My daughter has been playing soccer since she was 4. She is now a competitive player D1 player for the Lonestar FC club here in Texas on a U12 team. She is 12 and has now been playing for 7 years. We have sent her to summer camps at the University of Texas, Texas A&M (Div 1 NCAA Champs), Trinity University, Texas State University, and even sent her to the IMG Academy in Florida were the National Teams train. By 9 years old she had been coached by 3 collegiate coaches and had private lessons by former college and pro players. So, when she entered junior high school this year she found out that in her 7th grade year she has to pick a sport to participate in. So, we were like "that's easy join the soccer team"...well there isn't one. There is only volleyball, basket ball and track. For my son (who is entering next year) there is only football, basketball and track...he's a club swimmer...and a good one. Sadly, her soccer buddies who are boys are in the same predicament, they play none of the above and are all club players, so they will be all throwing the discus.
So, once they hit junior high school comes it is all about American ball...Football, BasketBall and Baseball. Not that there is nothing wrong with that, but the US fails to win the World Cup because there is no emphasis on the game at the young age and continue the sport in school curriculum. Out of Football, Basketball and Baseball the only one that is played on a international level is Basketball in the Olympics. Yet, when the Super Bowl and NBA finals are won the victors crown themselves "World Champions", which they are not. You cannot be a Champion of the World if you do not play them.
Now, for my friend Warrior who loves Hockey. Hockey is also played in the Olympics on the international level by both men AND women now! But, the Stanley Cup is still a North American Championship. So, until we incorporate soccer into the sports curriculum in school our Mens national team will be at least 4 to 5 World Cups behind the rest of the World. That is 20 to 25 years before our beloved Country will ever be able to say that we are the "World Champions". Until then, our franchise teams will still consider themselves world champs, but only in our part of the world and further more in our own little world.
See you in two years my brothers. Two you say? Yes, the Womens FIFA is coming and they are coming with a vengeance to win the cup after losing to the Japanese last world cup. When they do that, they would have won the Olympics Gold AND the FIFA in four years. Girl power yo, and thats why I spend my money on my daughter.
