World Cup in Brazil (5 Viewers)

I enjoy all sports but the World Cup is the championship for the whole world -- every country no matter how small gets a chance to compete to get to the World Cup finals -- and it happens only every four years. No other sport can say that (except maybe rugby). It is truly a world championship.

Cricket can say that, its huge world wide.

Warrior,

I played Football, Valenzuela was my hero so I pitched in Baseball, made two shots in junior high basketball once and played hockey at the Broadmore in Colorado Springs when I was a pee-wee. It was a USAFA vs. Cornell Univ half time game and I remember the Cornell players smiling at me with no front teeth. My Baseball coach was a Vietnam Vet, young dude, who picked us up at the park in his painting truck and took us to the games. He always got thrown out of the game by the refs and our asst. coach had to finish the game. Afterwards, he would take us for ice cream and make sure each and every one of us got home safely. My Football Coach-Coach Jack Short had perfect dentures and crooked index fingers, but always smelled like old spice...that cool refreshing scent. When he would point at you and say "me?" he would always yell at you and say "not you meat head! YOU!" and grab the kid next to you. You could never tell who he was pointing at because his pointy finger was so **** crooked. My junior high school Basketball coach always had spit in the corners of his mouth and spit on everyone at halftime, he spit on you when he talking to you, spit on you when he was yelling at you and he majorly spit on you when he blew his whistle. He was a nice Coach though and his name was Coach Atkinson. I never played past junior high because my parents divorced and that was that. I remember running track once and could barely run the 400. I ran in a race once and I remember everyone giving me the obligatory "your last and we are waiting on you to finish" ovation and that was it. I never competed again in any sport...ever.

I did do something else though, but that is a story for another day.

Jazz,

We speak the same language on Futbol and you and I have seen and felt the fevour of the game in the countries we have visited or lived. Here, the only school we have is the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. It originally was a Tennis School which has blossomed to a full fledge live in school and sports academy for tennis, golf, soccer, and basketball. They may have added more sports but I don't know as of yet. I am still considering sending my daughter there to train and go to school. HOWEVER COMMA, it is a whopping 60 gran a year. The camp I sent her to alone was 3K for 7 days with out airfare, but I must tell you it is the Hogwarts of youth athletes. When I was there to pick her up, I saw McEnroe and a lot of other familiar faces walking the campus where you go "that's uh...what's his name who won the gold in...uh". Of course the difference in Europe is the schools there are run by the Clubs and the kids are sponsored by the teams. There they are educated in scholastics and train day in and day out. Hence, they scout the talent at a very young age in Europe and Latin America and that is why they find and groom great players. The USA Womens National Team AND colleges are doing the same thing now for girls here in the US and have been doing that for years now. And that is why the USWNT is the best in the World...and the hottest too.

Combat,

Jerry Jones is not stupid. Need to make a quick 30 million or more (probably more)? Host the Mexico vs. Ecuador International Friendly at the new Dallas Cowboy Stadium and sell out all 105,000 seats. How do I know? I was there last June as a guest of Makita. My first time there and it was incredible! Yup, $10 a beer, $8 a hot dog, t-shirts, nachos, cokes, burgers, Señorita Makita Posters (Makita is the Official Sponsor of the Mexico National Team and the Japanese aren't dumb either) and whalla you got a hell of a show! My friend the demographics are a changing and there is big money to be made in soccer. There are HUGE sponsors of these teams and all you need to do is follow the money. Oh yes, my friend it WILL kick off in a big way when the powers that be realize that 5 billion people world wide watch the FIFA World Cup AND the amount of money is bet on the games in Vegas. Believe it or not, when the Spurs play in the NBA finals the viewership goes from around 1.5 Billion viewers to 3 Billions viewers worldwide because of the international make up of the Spurs team. The press boxes at the Spurs game host telecasts in 100 different languages compared to say LA vs Detroit. Its the money yo. And I know it is hard to believe but did you know that Real Madrid has more money as a Club than all NFL teams combined? Brother, soccer has huge dollars and you will slowly begin to see business interest peak up in the game. Frankly, when the business interests realize how much money they are losing NOT supporting soccer is that day they start selling YOU the fan to buy into soccer. So, remember that "most Americans" are learning both the metric and the...what do we call our system by the way?

Sorry John from Texas but I hear the same ol song and dance about how Soccer is going to take off some day in the good ol USA, guess what?? aint happened yet, sponsers can throw all the coins they want into teams/leagues/merchandise but if you don't have a steady following your pissing money down the drain and corporations will only do that for so long, it maybe all about the dollar, but that dollar is being spent on NFL,MLB, NBA, NHL, college sports etc..don't write me off as a soccer hater, I like it, played it for a few weeks in high school, but reality is what I see, it's cool to get excited about soccer and it's future here in the USA and certainly enjoyed following the USA the last few weeks, but if you asked me to name 3 teams still playing? couldn't do it, take this forum for instance, throw out the World soccer 4 yr. tourney and see how many threads/posts you can find on that great soccer match between so and so last nite, few and far in between, anyway I wish Soccer all the success in the world and congrats to this USA for doing great, but my O's are 1 game out of first and training camp starts in about 26 days!!!!!! let's go Ravens!!!!!:)...Sammy

Gents -

It's the World Cup. Let's allow people enjoy it without having to decide if sport A or sport B is better, manlier, more entertaining, etc. Last I checked a few zillion people were a wee bit passionate about this whole thing...

On a positive note I did think the US team played hard yesterday and didn't give up even when they went down 2-0. The goalie was incredible. He reminded me of Lindqvist keeping the Rangers in games where they were otherwise overmatched. Not a fan of the German coach though. I didn't see him do much except drink water and sit on the bench. I'm not exactly sure what is expected of a soccer coach but I would think one getting paid millions might produce a better team. They were clearly outmatched and lucky even to make it that far.

Despite my sadness with the result of the game, I’m happy to see how well the US team did overall in the Cup; and in this last game, I think Tim Howard should be hailed as a national hero, what a performance! :salute:::salute:::salute::

Tim Howard was amazing but it's a good news bad news performance. The good news was that he stopped 16 shots. The bad news was that he had to stop 16 shots, as Doug (Combat) alluded to. Had the possession time been better he wouldn't have been called to make those many stops. It's an unenviable record.

The US is lacking in the midfield, which is where the game is won and lost, which is why possession was horrendous and Howard was under siege for all of the last fifteen or so minutes when the offense woke up. The ability to maintain possession and recover possession from the other's team midfielders is a work in progress. I would expect it to be much better in 2018 in Russia, which is where I think Klinsmann has been pointing all along.

In transfer news, Liverpool is going to talk to Barcelona about Suarez. Barcelona may feel this step is necessary as they didn't win any hardware last year; Atletico Madrid won the League title and Real Madrid won the Champions League and the Copa del Rey (equivalent to the FA Cup).

Yep Brad, your analysis is again precise, and I fully concur. But as you know the saying, "ele foi o salvador da pátria", because without his performance, it could`ve been really ugly.
The US`s performance now was a major step into gearing up towards 2018, which certainly is a target as to when the US will certainly be competitive within the big dogs of this sport. I always take a look at Spain, who for more than 20 years worked towards something they achieved in 2010. Anyway, in football, as we witnessed again, it`s easier to get there than to stay there....:rolleyes2:
Brazil is facing similar midfield problems. The local press has been hammering this since game 1, and apparently Scolari finally gave in and we will see a different team with a different tactic setup facing the beautifully playing Colombia next Friday. Hope it works...:wink2:

Thanks Carlos. I think they are in great shape for 2018 and guys like Yedlin and Green will have matured some, not to mention all the other players who will be just the right age. I also think the enthusiasm shown here will mean a lot.

I hope Big Phil is not changing things just to suit the press but because it makes sense. You don't want to start doing something at this point that you haven't done before.

We have four Latin American teams and four European teams and all group winners. France vs Germany should be a delight, with all the jokes and quips about this war or that war that everyone will make.

Anybody need one of these? A Luis Suarez bottle opener ^&grin

With the USA now out of things, I'm going to join my good friend Ana Donzino at Beau Geste in shouting:

MESSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ana was at our house when the pope was elected - an amazing day for Argentines.

The pope is a big futbol fan...can Argentina possibly have both a pope and a world cup to celebrate???

Pete
