World Cup in Brazil (1 Viewer)

Then a lot of really good overtime action and 2 goals would have been missed. Sudden death is no guarantee of a quick result. Look at the length of some hockey playoff games.

Terry

I'm not looking for a quick result.

It should be sudden death, next goal wins in the first or the second overtime; if nobody scores, go to the shootout.

OT in playoff hockey is spectacular; every time your team rushes up the ice, you get excited, every time the opposition rushes up the ice, you get nervous.

It's sports drama at it's finest.

The PK/shootout in the World Cup bothers me because the goalie is at such a huge disadvantage.

Warrior,

Thats it Bro, your fired from the FIFA World Cup commentary and your Hockey side by side comparisons. I've consulted with you, consoled with you, had Larry King commentaries with you, gave you history lessons and more importantly have yet make fun of Mass-a-chew-sets. It is all about Ice, Ice, Vanilla Ice with you and dang nabit hockey and soccer are two completely different sports with different rules. Yes, hockey is a legendary game, but soccer is the "beautiful game"...

...and OT in Soccer is spectacular: every time your team makes a penalty shot on goal, you get excited, every time opposition shots on your goalie, you get nervous.

It's sport drama at it's finest.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's a better solution. Anything involving the players playing more than 120 minutes is just an option, from a physical point of view, and John is right: you can't compare this to hockey.

Let's focus on the matches, because we are seeing some wonderful football, football that many of us only get to see every four years.

Brad:

Agreed, here's hoping the US keeps winning.

Agreed, two OT's is more than enough.

I like the shoot out actually, it's got more to do with the shooter soiling himself than the goalie making the save; you're a world class player, you should be able to knock the ball in from that close 99 times out of 100.

Don't know why more of them don't come up to the ball, fake the shot and get the goalie to fall left or right and then knock it in.

But what do I know..........

Was watching the tennis (well done to our Aussie boy Nick Kyrgios ^&grin ) and flicking over to the soccer and it took 118 minutes to get exciting, loved the last 5 minutes maybe they should shorten the halves to make it more a spectacle.

What an ending, just unreal, a header hits the post, then it bounced right back to the guy and off of him out of bounds.

Loved how the Swiss pulled the goalie for an extra attacker too, nice touch............

More 0-0 regulation time. Maybe just go direct to the 30 minutes of OT to project some urgency, then to the shootout if necessary. 115 minutes at 0-0 until someone cracks from exhaustion or a simple error is expecting a lot from players and fans. -- Al

OMG!!! Today I woke up as a born and raised Swiss! Imagine how I felt after Di Maria’s goal at that stage in the game!!:redface2::mad::redface2::mad: The Swiss put up an extraordinary game against Argentina... They got this close to make football history!
Right now turning into an American for the next game this afternoon! :wink2:

I think the lesser teams are showing the powers a thing or two. They are going into matches without fear. That is what the US has to do.

I agree Brad, and that is the attitude for the US. I hope they are the ones to meet Argentina in the next game. Speaking of Argentina, this team is proving that yes, one single man can make the differece: Messi is saving them on and on at the very last moment, when not scoring himself, serving to the one who scores...

The US are lucky they're not down. All the problems that have plagued them are showing. They have to put more pressure on the Belgium defense and maintain better possession.

Lucky indeed. As sloppy as the US has been, it could be a 2-0 deficit. -- Al

US being outplayed even worse in the 2nd half. How long before this virtual avalanche of Belgian attacks succeed? -- Al

And the answer is 92 minutes as the US goes to sleep again. -- Al

Can you pull the goalie and lead a banzai charge down the field? I think that is what it would take for the US to score.

WOW, USA! USA! USA! USA!

They put the human white flag in, the kid and he scores a goal.

Or should I say YEWSA! YEWSA! YEWSA!

Depends on what part of the country you are from........
