Over 170 men from the town of Ballina, Co. Mayo, Ireland died in the Great War. To mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of WW1 this diorama was built in a local museum and depicts a scene from the later part of the war as German Stormtroopers launch a surprise attack on British trenches using a captured British Mark IV tank now bearing German markings. As British troops scramble to defend their positions a Vickers machine gun team and an 18-pounder artillery piece are brought into action.
The entire diorama is scratch built apart from the WB gun emplacement which we built into the piece and some WB barbed wire & shell hole scenics which we supplemented with our own. We also built in some JG miniatures trench sections but most of the trenches are home made. The timber base was cut to allow visitors to look down the trenches wherever these ran on to the edges.
The British figures are W. Britains and Little Contemptibles and the Germans are ONTC, all from my collection. The diorama measures 172cms x 90cms wide and was again built with the help of my good friend, Pat Gleeson. Hope you enjoy. Colman
