I can't recall reading much about WW2 comic books here on TF, however I'm sure its been raised on occasion. Being a youngster growing up in the 70's comics of every description were the bomb back then.

Due to us living at the bottom of the pacific (NZ) all comic books were imported and generally filtered through via ship. Over time I collected an array of WW2 comic's like 'Commando' and the like, however my favorites were the UK printed 'Battle Picture Weekly' . These arrived sporadically from the UK often months behind their original release dates.

I was devastated during a house move I lost my entire Battle Picture Weekly collection back in 1978. However just recently I managed to pick up a few old copies online from an owner who had them stored his away for decades.

Despite my age I have truly enjoyed the nostalgia of having the opportunity to read these again.

Was wondering are there any other TS collectors who still have their old comics tucked away.......?

As a kid the main comic I got a lot of was called Sad Sack which was about US army. Most would have been bought in Army bases (NAAFI) overseas in late 60's / 70's as grew up moving from one to another. I kept them in pretty good condition and got them to Australia in 1997. Unfortunately my kids had little interest in them and the few they read did not last long. Not sure where they are now.

Seems the comic went until 1982.

From Wikipedia - Sad Sack is an American comic strip and comic book character created by Sgt. George Baker during World War II. Set in the United States Army, Sad Sack depicted an otherwise unnamed, lowly private experiencing some of the absurdities and humiliations of military life. The so-called "unnamed private" was actually Ben Schnall, a true-life private in the US Army during World War II, member of Yank magazine and good curmudgeonly friend of Sgt. George Baker. The title was a euphemistic shortening of the military slang "sad sack of ****", common during World War II. The phrase has come to mean "an inept person" or "inept soldier".

Another favourite was Asterix the Gaul. Did also read Commando and my son did like those also.

Was never into Marvel or DC comics.

Dad & his older brother enjoyed the Combat series from the early 60's. Those are long gone but Dad still remembers them as good fun for kids like him & Mike. (of course Pat's brother's name is Mike...)

Still have my collection...Sgt Rock and Easy Company, GI Combat The Haunted Tank, Sgt Fury and His Howling Commandos, The Losers, Unknown Soldier. The old Variety store in town always had a great selection.
I loved comics as a kid. A lot of them got destroyed when my roof leaked. Other than those mentioned I remember Enemy Ace, Iron Corporal, Weird War. Many I can't remember. Dell Comics made an excellent series. There was a Vietnam War comic about a Marine Sgt. There was a comic about soldiers fighting dinosaurs. Cowboy comics were also good. There was a comic about a ragtag group during the French & Indian Wars also.

The main thing I remember about Sgt. Rock was he blew up Tiger tanks by firing through their vision ports. Ah, the naivety of youth!
I also had a huge stash of the very early Marvels, like the first 50 or issues of Spidey, FF, Thor, Iron Man, etc. Then one day in my teens I decided I was too old for them and tossed them all. When I see what they sell for now . . . sigh.

That's the crazy thing, they've become collection items again and some fetch silly money. I see some collectors now frame them and hang on walls, a bit like old record covers.

Great thread! As a kid I really enjoyed Sgt Rock, The Haunted Tank and Nick Fury and his howling Commandos! I had a friend who had a ton of them and even had the Battle ones you guys mentioned. I think his family had relatives in the UK and they sent them. Brought back some great memories with this thread!

Ha ha- shocker on Haunted Tank:LOL: there six! I loved Haunted Tank as well and it inspired me to consider being a tanker as a boy.

I think years ago I may have had a thread on this topic.

SGT. Rock was the staple for me. As I got older, Enemy Ace became a big favorite as did Charley's War- I picked up some really nice hardcover's of Charley's War a few years back .

Ironically enough, I have some of my war comics up on display here in my man cave basement. The other night my son was looking at one titled "MAN COMICS" which had some GI's gunning down a poor ChiCom trooper- he laughed out loud and goes "Oh My God Dad- could this drawing get anymore racist"??? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: We both had a laugh on that. "Man Comics" were from the late 50's I believe.

Early this century (that's a thing), I accumulated a special collection of Commando, Battle and War comics that were based on Australian Forces, they were pretty rare as most featured British Servicemen, now wish I had kept those, but the kids didn't seem that interested in them, to busy playing electronic games.
