Things that annoy me (8 Viewers)

Didn't you have to had chicken pox to get shingles? I heard that but don't really know.
Mark
Yes, that's a fact, shingles is caused by a reactivation of the existing Chicken pox virus. I had bad chicken pox in my early teens and got shingles in early 30's, probably due to stress, being married with Two toddlers may have been a contributing factor ;) 😀

Yes, that's right Mark, but if you've not had chicken pox, you can be infected with it by contact with someone who has Shingles, and whose spots are still weeping.

If anyone wonders if the horrors about California are true - just google NFL players and what happens to non resident ones when they play there. Example - Sam Darnold, wins a Superbowl, his base salary is about 175K for that win. His tax bill due to California's punitive tax code against sports stars and days they are in the State - $250K. He lost $75K for winning the Superbowl. How anyone lives in that morass is beyond me.

I wonder what is next - will they start charging you an entry fee at the airport to visit there?

I always respect your economic and accounting views.

I live in CA and Texas equal parts of a year.

Until you have lived in either state for extended periods of time I would be careful about making any judgments.

I have paid ridiculous taxes and fees to be in careful while in the same year I have suffered through over 175 days of temperatures that reached over 100 degrees in Texas.

Nothing is perfect and to each their own.

I don't believe I ever said RFK is at fault for the measles outbreak...but I still strongly criticize his anti-vax encouragement...and also most all of his medical/health ideologies...if you want to champion his theories...and have no problem with him running the US Dept. of Health and Human Resources...challenging the existing public health establishment of medical and scientific community experts...with RFK having no degree in medicine, public health or even nursing...making him grossly unqualified to dictate medical advice...I have no problem with that...me...I will trust science...and we can just agree to disagree on that...
I would take him over Fauci. Fauci was in the pocket of the drug companies. As are most of the players who oversee our health. He could not be trusted. I think he played a role - directly or indirectly - in the COVID outbreak and lied about it. At the very least, he was woefully unprepared for a pandemic. His entire career and job were based upon doing exactly that. He was incompetent and corrupt. RFK is a flawed individual. He may not be as qualified for the position as others but at least he is taking a fresh, independent look at our declining health. He is not concerned with profit for the drug companies. The US pays more than anyone else for health care and our people are obese and sick. It's long overdue to revisit the entire system. The media, however, is not concerned with results. They are concerned with politics. Therefore, the stories have to be negative no matter what RFK does.

While it's great that they were able to recover some video footage of the recent kidnapper, it is a bit concerning from a privacy perspective that they are apparently able to retrieve footage from a "disabled" camera. Not exactly sure what that means in this context, but it seems as though video footage is being recorded and stored even when the camera is not operating. What does that mean for computers, phones, and other security cameras that people have in their homes?

Fauci deserves a good long stretch in federal prison for his part in the "gain of function" research that led to the development of the Covid virus and touting vaccines he claimed to be far more effective than they actually were. Not to mention the irreparable damage done to children's education during that period.

"a fresh independent look" from a totally unqualified person gives me no comfort...I would take a first year medical student's advice over RFK's...

was Fauci totally unprepared for a pandemic...yes he was...just like the entire world was...just like Fauci...nobody knew what to do...

still...I suppose anything was better than Dr. Trump's advice...another "fresh independent look"...

watch Dr. Brix's (a renowned medical expert) uncomfortable reaction to his proposal of injecting disinfections to cure Covid...
totally uncomfortable...she can't even look him in the eyes as he plays doctor...

Mike, I purchased a new Hybrid Hyundai SUV last year, was a late adopter of Electric motors, but I really like that it's so quiet when driving in my urban area, frugal with fuel and quick off the mark at traffic lights ;)
smart move...

my brother in law just bought a large hybrid SUV and he loves it...averaging 34 mph...which is unheard of for a large SUV...claims he gets better gas mileage in town than on the highway...cause the motor doesn't kick in to use gas...doesn't even have to plug it in to recharge...says his gas purchases have dimished incredibly...I wish I had bought one...

:) We have always had this debate! During those 175 days, the air conditioner is still cheaper to run!!!

Tom, I initially intended to get the larger turbo petrol only version but the smaller turbo hybrid was actually quicker, and I have a 'need for speed' 🤪
I don't have anything against a hybrid if it was the model of car I like, they do save gas expense for sure. Would I buy a full electric - no, that would not be for me, but a hybrid I would not shy away from if a car I wanted. Edit here, one of the only cars I would not get in a hybrid is a Corvette, which I do hope never comes in one!

That said - recently my wife and I have been shopping to replace a sedan and it is not going great. IMO or at least ours, we are not finding a great deal of cars to our liking, there are a zillion SUV's out there and that is where we may end up due to the utter lack of sedans we like.

Trump did listen to Fauci and Brix at first but then started to give his opinion of what to do.

Good to know. I never had chicken pox so I thought I was safe.
Mark
Yes, sounds odd that you can get Chicken pox from someone with Shingles, but you need to have already had chicken pox to get shingles !

I have found that when an opinionated person is right about one thing in the face of a majority opinion, they then tend to regularly disregard profeessional expertise. Think about anyone who says 'my doctor does not know what he's on about' and then they start to self medicate or offer advice from on high. New parents who have gone through the complete round of early childhood health issues can be particularly strident (based on a research cohort of three couples!). Also, think Hitler after 1940; gog a few things right and then made a whole series of disasterous decisions (for him, not us of course). This is why people like Trump think they can design a battleship because he 'knows aesthetics'. It's a complete disregard of training and experience. How many sitcoms have characters who are in advertising or marketing etc, and get by on 'moxie' rather than the skillset those fields require.

I've known a few people who had shingles. One said it was the most painful thing he's had, hurt even to take a shower. I got the vaccine after hearing that.
Shingles are annoying, but I've had Two kidney stones, you experience a whole new level of pain with those.

I purchased a hybrid Santa Fe (1.6 Liter turbo plus electric), a largish SUV by Aussie standards but prob considered medium size in the US. It's prob too big for me but I have intentions of travelling with it now I'm retired, meanwhile it has been handy for carrying stuff for my recent home renovations which I'm doing myself being too tight to pay some tradie ;) And I agree with you brother in law that it's more economical around town, which is almost 95% of my use...so far.

My main options before I bought the Santa Fe was a Hybrid Camry or a RAV4, both reliable vehicles, but prob not for everyone.
