Three Most Wanted Sets (1 Viewer)

Tommy,

For me, the three most collectable and rare are the three missing in your own personal collection :)

So, for me, 1 - the Complete Peking Wall/Gate, 2 - the Victoria, and 3 - the Dhow. List is subject to change depending on what you and Martyn post from your collections :D
Thanks Lawrence. I need the dhow and would pay top dollar to get it since it is the only Trophy boat I lack. I don't have the Boxer artillery piece either. Trophy as to the rare sets are expensive but so are the rare Britains. Most old Britains don't command much of a price but neither does Trophy civil war, WWI and Naps.

Lawrence, I was lucky to find your "top 3" list pretty quickly :) ...but now I faced more difficult tasks :(... I have 2 "Victoria"s and the Dhow "in works" ..the Wall should not be a problem... would your trade the "Vic" for your Leopard?

Tommy, if I got the Dhow you will be first to know :)

The Naps are getting expensive...I collect only Naps personalities and mounted figures...and also trying to "fill out" Napoleon in Egypt range...but American dealers just did not have many pieces from this range...

Why a sore subject?

Al, KUDOS, hit nail on proverbial head. If Mike Norris had the moulds, Trophy would have never stopped. His LL is EXCELLENT. And I am quite sure he could have carried on the Trophy tradition in high standard and quality. What a shame he didn't get them.

Again, after I saw the "matte" WW1 Bus that was produced by MM......thanks but no thanks.

TD

As for Britains, I do collect Britains and their evolution is completely different. They have modern and vintage available, different story to me!

I didn't realise Mike Norris had made an offer?

I have been outbid 3 times on that particular set and have what I think is a nearly complete Sherlock across all makers toy miniature collection. Not all, but close, that is one set that continues to elude me.

I don't think that is what anybody was saying. I believe it is the general opinion that Mike Norris does EXCELLENT Glossy work with Little Legion. Based on that style it is my opinion and others it seems that IF he would have been the one to end up with the Trophy Line, then maybe Trophy could have continued.

The facts Martin, obviously from your posts Ken is a good friend and again, my opinion is my opinion. I mean Ken no disrespect. BUT here are the facts as I see them:

1. Trophy was turned over what seems many many moons ago to Ken. IT SITS.

2. Trophy done in MATTE in my opinon is Crap with a capital C no matter who makes it including Len himself. Part of the charm is the gloss, that is why Little Legion (IMO) is doing great.

3. Original Trophy holds a special place to most collectors. Look at the frenzy of auction prices.

4. And without getting too personal and particulars, my own attempted dealing for an older stock piece was a not good experience.

Long story short, at this point, I would rather see the moulds stay buried then see them in Matte or not done like original Trophy. Also, I don't believe they would ever be affordable due to my previous experience.

Just my opinion, wouldn't be unhappy if its proven wrong.

Tom,
Have you been outbid at eBay? I have not seen that "Dr. Watson at Maiwand" ever surfaced there...
Al

Yup, 2 times at ebay and 1 time privately. Also 1 other time, like Get Smart, I missed it by that much (timing).

Oh brother, I just can't get a break on that one.

Tom, I guess it's matter of luck...you missed it 4 times and I got it two times :)
12 sets were sold in the US market as much as I know so your chances are still not so bad...
I have never seen this set at eBay... do you remember how long ago they were sold and for how much?
Al

Tom, It looks like we missed the TS deal of the century : buying Trophys molds :D oh well maybe it's not too late we can buy them out from Ken?
I bet we would start a production in 6 months somewhere between Maryland and Pennsylvania :D

Yes Ken is a good friend of mine so I hear things that I unfortunatly can't repeat.
But can I just answer a couple of your points.

1. Ken has just passed the SIX THOUSAND mark on Trophy figures sold in private commisions. Not all collectors come on here.

2. The only Trophy done in a matte finish was the WW1 bus, originaly asked for by a customer, so some extras were made and advertised. I know that someone got one expecting it to be gloss but it could have been supplied in any finish wanted!

3.That was the point of my original question. I wasn't implying that Ken would think about making the "most wanted" I was just interested in whether the figures are most wanted because of rareity or whether they would be just as popular if easily available. I suspect the former.

Obviously I can't comment on 4.

So what exactly do you mean private commission?
Either Ken is producing Trophy or he is not. I have spoken to him and he said he was not. What do you have to do to get some Trophy sets out of him?

Martin, thank you very much for making interesting points as usually...

If you are taking about 6 thousand figures (not GBPs) which will be app 1,000 sets in 6 years -it's not much for TS production company...obviously private commissions have never been advertised to general public so what would we know...

Historically re-making or re-casting of the rare pieces has never been very popular, most collectors hate them because they are posing a kind of threat to the value of their "treasures" :)

This approach has been tried many times before with stamps, postcards, toy soldiers and die-cast models and failed every time miserably because true collectors always want an original piece rather cheap (or not so cheap) placeholder.

While this discussion has been most interesting and informative, I wonder if there are other Trophy collectors who would let us know what their three most wanted sets are.

Mine would be

Christmas Omnibus
Victoria
RollsRoyce or the one "like" a RR

There would be a willing investor in Virginia.
