2019 Chicago Show Pictures from Beaufighter

Thanks for all these photos. Almost as good as being there. (Well...not quite.)

Scott, Surely you're going to paint all those figures. Surely ;)

    Timpo favorites?

Thanks for those photos Obee. Ah yes, I distinctly remember that Napoleonic Old Guard (?) officer fiercely slashing with his sword. I also remember how easily some of the painting came off those figures {sm4}.

Treefrog's 2019 Chicago Toy Soldier Show Dinner & Adventures!

Darn, missed another one! I did attend one of the early ones with my son. He was about 12 then. He's now 47.

    Timpo favorites?

Way back in the early 1960's I somehow obtained some Timpo 54mm plastics. They've all disappeared now, but I do remember favorites. The Cossacks - especially one throwing overhead a small barrel - was one. A few French Napoleonic Old Guard (?) were pretty cool. Any favorites of yours to add here?

    Old Toy Soldier auctions

Good point: be careful and not get carried away. I've got a copy of James Opie's [I]Pocket Guide to Britains Hollowcast Toy Soldiers[I] published in 1994, but that's more a curiosity than an aid. I do know that I paid a lot more for my Britains in the 1980's and 1990's before the InterNet and...

    Old Toy Soldier auctions

(I visit this site infrequently, so please pardon me if I'm repeating information already widely known.) Are forum members aware of the Old Toy Soldier auctions? They are held often (one just this month and the next in early October). Items up for sale include Britains (both pre-1966 and post)...

How many active vintage W. Britains Ltd. collectors?

(UPDATE): I'm now officially in my IIIrd Phase of owning Britains. (First Phase = as a kid in the 1950's - early 1960's. Second Phase = late 1980's-mid 1990's when I thought I was a collector.) In the last two years I discovered an Ebay seller here in the US who put on auction the collection of...

Humbrol paints - then & now

Thanks John and Brad. I also don't mix paints (very well) and prefer to paint straight from the container. I've printed out a chart with suggested "matches" with specific Humbrol colors. Some manufacturers should be easy to find. Others...well maybe not.

Our changing hobby-the decline of shows and possible alternatives

I once had a long conversation with the author, Tony Hillerman. He was a WW II vet, wrote a number of mysteries centered around the Four Corners area of Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. He also taught at the University of New Mexico. He was once asked by a student, "Mr. Hillerman, were...

Humbrol paints - then & now

I know that Humbrol has been through a few owners (e.g. Monogram which I believe did the line no favors), and the numbering system has been revised accordingly. I have a few tins from the original line, but I wonder if there is a way to match up the old numbers with current ones? I understand...

vallejo acrylic paints and checked luggage

Even though the Vallejo bottles are well within the 3 oz. max that TSA allows, I'm guessing that if you have several TSA will ask you to open your carryon, or they will open your checked bag. I had a similar issue with my checked bag several years ago when I was bringing back some zinnfiguren...

    James Opie Books

If you should have a copy of Opie's price list (copyright 1994) all quotes are in British Pounds. They were worth about $1.62 US then.

    repainting old Britains

I've got some Britains Ltd toy soldiers from the 1950's and 1960's that need to be repainted in places. I hope to match the original colors of their coats, tunics, Bearskins, etc. Is there some source out there that can help me make those matches?

    James Opie Books

All three books cited here are highly recommended even if there is a little overlap among them all. Serious Britains collectors might also want a copy of Opie's late 1990's price book wherein he cites individual evaluations of sets. He says these have not changed much in the last 20+ years...
