It's almost that time again boys and girls. Week One has its usual slate of embarrassing cupcake match ups, but also a few good ones. The picks:

Ohio St. 38 VA Tech 10: "Warden" Myers takes his team on the road into a hostile environment but the Gobblers are terrible. It will be like Thanksgiving in turkey town for the Buckeyes.

Alabama 31 Wisconsin 20: probably the best game of the week. Congrats to an SEC team for playing a real non-conference opponent. A break with tradition. Maybe someday they will play an actual road game instead of a neutral site.

Notre Dame 17 Texas 13: two programs that had a disastrous season last year. ND at home has a slight advantage with their phantom PI calls from the refs late in games, but wouldn't be surprised if Texas wins.

Stanford 31 Northwestern 20: Stanford has perfected the 1920s style offense and winning when scoring 20 or less points. They should push NW around though and get a few scores late to open it up.

This is superb; keep it going all year please.

Do you have some sort of newsletter I can subscribe to?

"Perfected the 1920's style offense" is my favorite line, but there are some real gems in there................

Stanford and Northwestern is a battle of the Top 25's. Oh wait, it is a US News & World Report top 25 academic ranking battle, #4 vs. #13. Then again, what do academics have to do with college????

GO CARDINAL!

GO CARDINAL!

Hold on there, pardner! Them's fightin' words.

A couple years ago Northwestern was on the verge of becoming a significant player in the B1G10. Since a loss to Ohio State, they decided to go in the tank and suck mightily (last year was VERY painful). The good news? Expectations of the Wildcats is at a low ebb. We ALWAYS do well when we're expected to be terrible (and vice versa).

So while we're starting a freshman quarterback (Thorson) and have an offensive line that would happily let your grandma into the backfield to drop a kiss on Thorson's smooth cheeks, I suspect the Cardinal have already chalked this one up as a win and might be surprised to find the fight in the 'Cats!

A note to the other NFL Minor League Football Factories around the country...we believe in STUDENT athletes! The popular chant back in the day (yup, I'm an NU alum!), "That's alright, that's OK...you're going to work for us someday!"

I don't think it is a gimme for Stanford, it should be a better game than most people expect it to be.

Harblow is 0-1 now in Michigan. I'm sure he will eventually restock that program with more talent but they currently stink. Hopefully Jimbo doesn't stroke out before things get on track. Should be a great rivalry with Warden Myers.

Psst! Don't look now, but NW leads at the half.:wink2: -- Al

U of Maryland CB Likely sets new Big 10 punt return record, breaks record set in 1939! GO Terps! Chris

Tough week so far for the PAC. Stanford looked awful. Their senior QB had a five yd per pass completion average. Unbelievably inept. Wash St lost to something called Portland St. A lot more parity in college football.

Congratulations, Pete. Your boys won a big one.:salute:: -- Al

Happy day in Wildcat land!

Not surprisingly, the focus is on how bad the Stanford offense played...not how good the Cats defense held them in check.

The only important college football game yesterday was (the powerhouse ..:rolleyes:) NAVY Midshipmen crushing Colgate 48-10. :tongue: {sm4}
GO NAVY!!!

Of course, the only important football game of the season is coming up in December ---- Army - NAVY!
GO NAVY - BEAT ARMY!!! ... AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Navy just ran over Colgate. Thought they looked pretty good. The Army/Navy game is my favorite football game of any season. Love to watch the march ins and all the other goings on. And beating Army is a lot of fun, too. :wink2: -- Al

Another aspect to this historic rivalry are the TV commercials, where both academies take some pretty funny shots at each other.

One of the best was few years ago was showing a very pretty girl leaning out of a second story window of a burning house. Then it shows the Army guys coming out of the sky in chutes, breaking down first floor windows and doors with big rams; swinging from trees into the (side of the) house; ripping off the roof and digging tunnels into the basement. They bringing in Bradley's, Helicopters, and all sort of heavy equipment. There must 20 officers arguing over the BEST tactical strategy to get her out.{sm0}

After a couple minutes of this chaos a NAVY midshipmen simply gets the ladder from under the window climbs up, takes her into his arms and climbs down. They drive off in his car (to get his reward ... :rolleyes:) while the ARMY guys are still struggling to get into the house. {sm3}{sm3}

Most of the BEST commercials are at the stadium itself. Plus there is a LOT of celebration going around outside the stadium and in the surrounding parks. I think I been to 17 games and can never say it wasn't a fantastic time. ...... Especially with Navy on its looooooong winning streak.

I know you guys are happy and I should be,but I still hate randy pretzel. Just can't bring myself to root for that idiot.
Td

Ps I never thought I would say I like an ex Notre dame qb but I liked Golson last night for the Noles. They are way young but should be fun to watch at times this year.
