2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (1 Viewer)

Al,

He will leave at the end of 2018; he and the Mets don't get along and he's become too much of a distraction. If they could trade him for decent value at the end of the season, they probably would but a lot of teams don't want to touch him. He likes the idea of being a personality rather than a pitcher when it should be vice versa. I also don't think he likes being second fiddle behind Syndergaard and de Grom. He's had two major surgeries and that may have sapped some of his talent.

So much for the vaunted pitching staff. They had one good year, 2015, but haven't been able to produce that much since then. Things can and do change quickly in sport.
I've always liked Harvey's mound demeanor and his ability. Sounds like he may have lost something because of the physical problems but it really seems he needs a new start somewhere else. That happens a lot. Maybe best for both sides at this point just to part ways. I can't get the Arrieta move to Chicago out of my head as a perfect example of the 'new surroundings' theory.
As any baseball fan knows, pitching staffs are the most delicate of structures and any injury or a simple 'down year' can upset even the best staff. Thor will be back and deGrom will continue to produce. Someone else will step in to take up the slack, as always. -- Al

He's lost some of his moxie and his invincibility. At this point, he should focus on becoming some version of what he was because the current version is not very good.

Nats bullpen strikes again, blowing their 4th save opportunity in a row, along with the game. The bullpen has now blown 7 of 17 save attempts. This team and the starting pitchers are being torpedoed by the Little Leaguers in the pen. The bullpen has surrendered 21 Hrs, so far.
Also, I'm running out of patience with the O's starter Kevin Gausman. Handed a 5-0 lead, he failed to make it to the 5th inning for the 4th time in 9 starts. He has only 2 QS this season. Don't know what's happened to him. Thought he had found the key in the 2nd half of last season, but he seems to have lost it somewhere along the line. His season ERA is now 7.19 and he's lucky to be 2-3, not 2-5. -- Al

Glad you liked it Al. Wartime baseball was quite different.

Mets implosion continues. The bullpen is horrible, worse than 2015. The GM did a horrible job putting the pen together. The last four games can be laid at their feet. The starting pitching is terrible too. They're averaging less than 6 in innings per start. Their failure is killing the bullpen. When you're ahead 7-1 you should win.

They now face the Diamondbacks, which will be no picnic.

Bad day for clubs with leads. Nats lead 3-0 and lost; O's lead 5-0 and lost; Mets lead 7-1 and lost. You might say it was a lost weekend for the O's and Mets and the Nats still have to play a rubber match tonight. :rolleyes2: -- Al

crazy..the O's take 2 of 3 from the best in baseball last week in the Nats, then get swept for the first time this year by the bottom feeding Royals {eek3}^&confuse losing all games by 1 run, oh well, hopefully a day off on Monday to shake out the cobwebs then on to Detroit.

I need to eat some crow. Before the season began I mocked the fact that some experts picked the Astros to win the AL West. I was wrong, Houston has the best record in baseball right now.

History almost repeated in the nightcap as, once again, the Nats terrible bullpen blew another lead but were bailed out by a 2-run Hr in the bottom of the 8th as the Nats won 6-5. The bullpen is beginning to bother me a little bit.:rolleyes2: -- Al

37 games into the season and the Super Cubs are under .500. Who would have thought that? Big time WS hangover. -- Al

Saw an interesting online poll regarding baseball this morning; the question was how closely are you following baseball this season and the choices ranged from very closely to not at all. About 1 million people have replied so far, which is a very small sample, but nevertheless, about half of them picked "not at all", another 27% picked I check in from time to time, so that's close to 90% of the people, or 900,000 who are basically saying baseball is barely on their radar.

For me, I fall into the check in from time to time, just have not been able to get into the sport so far this year, mostly due to the Red Sox playing like **** so far this year.

The sport itself is not compelling enough for me to watch any non Red Sox games, unlike other sports that I will watch regardless of whether a Boston team is involved or not.

As far as my interest in general, NFL is #1, playoff hockey is #1A, regular hockey is #2, college football #3, college basketball #4, MLB #5 and NBA basketball #6.

Not sure what the attendance around the league looks like so far, but here in Boston, it's not that great.

I wonder if the sport is not as popular as it used to be, specifically with the under 40 year old demographic.............................

Don't know how attendance compares to previous years, but there are plenty of people going. Only Tampa Bay and Oakland are averaging less than 20k a game. 4 teams are averaging 40k or more and another 10 are at 30k+, with the rest at 20k+. Not too shabby. Boston is averaging 35k+, so there doesn't appear to be much, if any, fall off. Can't put much store in polls, just ask Hillary.:wink2: -- Al

They're not as hungry as last year. I think this is typical. The exceptions in the last 20 years seem to be the Yankees and the Giants.

You forgot about the Red Sox, they've won three WS titles in the past 13 years. You'd have thought after finally winning one for the first time since 1918 in 2004, they'd be content with that, but they won another one in 2007, got to the ALCS in 2008 (still can't fathom how they lost to the Doofin Rays), then again in 2013 when they won a third title.

At this point, here in Boston the fans are content, I can tell you that. If they stink this year and do nothing, then whatever............................three WS titles in my lifetime (so far) is a dream come true.

There is lots of talk that the A's might be moving. If that happens Oakland will go from having three professional teams to zero within a 3 year span.

Where would they move to?

The current rumor is Portland. Many believe that the A's ownership is behind the move rumors to gain leverage against Oakland. The only problem with that is the the City of Oakland has bigger problems than a potential A's move and the public is not about to fund a new stadium.
