2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (1 Viewer)

Bumgarner is now 1-5 after losing to Arizona last night 2-1. That is tough to see let alone believe.

The season for our teams reminds me of when you get up in the morning, something happens and it throws you off for the whole day.

I still look forward to each game and to the wins, when they happen ^&grin The plus side for the season is seeing Conforto establish himself and Rosario, the heralded SS come up; he's anchored the defense. Dominic Smith will soon be following. They've also fortified the pen (although there is more work to do, but it's a beginning).

On the plus side, the Angels are playing well: they've won 4 in a row and are at 500 and now they're only 3 GB in the WC race. Garrett Richards will be back soon so the starting pitching should get a boost in September.

Couple of oddities from yesterday's games: Bartolo Colon threw a CG victory for the Twins over the Rangers. Oldest pitcher (44 y.o.) to throw a CG since Nolan Ryan (45 y.o.) did it in 1992. Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom had a stolen base, the first of his career. Stanton had a 477 foot Hr. Pretty good shot. -- Al

Gotta love the Murph. After destroying the Cubs in the 2015 playoffs, he continued his history against them in yesterday's Nats/Cubs game. He hit 2 Hrs and drove in 3 in the 4-2 Nats win. Hopefully, Madon continues to angst over Harper and continues to ignore Murphy. -- Al
Good thing the Nats took the first game in this series because the next two games are iffy based on the SP. Jackson starts today (a former Cub, and inconsistent) and Fedde (rookie call-up) starts tomorrow. Going to be tough to win either of these two games. Cubs caught us with our # 4,5, and 6 SP's due up. -- Al

I don't know what the O's should do about Tillman. He had another disaster tonight, giving up 7 runs in 2+ innings and putting the O's in another huge hole, 7-0. He has had only 3 QS in 15 starts and has won only once, his first start on May 7. He's not even averaging 5 innings a start and his ERA has soared to 8.10 with tonight's lemon. I know I'm down on Miley and uBADo, but as bad as they are, they at least give the O's a marginally better game. Tillman has just been awful and I really don't see how the O's, fighting to save their season, can afford to send him to the mound anymore. Someone needs to grow a pair and make the tough decision regarding Tillman. -- Al
Well, what do you know? Someone grew a pair, as the O's announced today that Tillman is being sent to the bullpen in the hopes that he can regain his form. Tillman has pitched in 194 MLB games, every one of them as a starter. The bullpen is a very different animal. It will be quite an adjustment but the O's had no real choice. I hope it works out as an effective Tillman is a big plus for the O's. -- Al

The Giants are in a similar spot with Cain, but he was "saved" by Cueto's injury. Part of me thinks they are considering putting him in the bullpen because the only other option is an outright release.

Brad:

Thanks for the timely post. The Giants fell behind 4-0 last night but thanks to your post I kept listening and they came back and won it in extras 5-4!

Are they going to win the World Series? No, but they won last night!!

Called that one. Jackson got ambushed for 4 in the first and the Nats played catch-up the rest of the game and never managed to, losing 7-4. Today's starter, Fedde, makes his 2nd big league start. His first was an unimpressive loss to the Rockies a week ago, but the Nats have no other option right now. Hope things go a little better for the kid this game. -- Al

Just once can Ubaldo pitch back to back solid games?? if history repeats itself like usual Ubaldo will be gone by the 2nd inning since he pitched lights out last weeks game, hoping maybe lightening does strike twice for the guy, we need a win today before heading West.

I believe in miracles...sometimes. -- Al

Tough call on Cain, as with Tillman. Cain is a lifelong Giant (13 years), and starter, having started 328 times in 336 games, so a shift won't be easy. Cain was effective for the first 8 years of his career, going 85-78, through 2012. He seems to have just fallen of a cliff since then though, going 19-38, with an ERA approaching 4.75, over the last 5 seasons. The Giants have been really patient with him, I guess because of the injuries. Don't think they can afford any longer, just like the O's with Tillman. Another rather tough decision due on a vet who has only played for one team and is part of their WS legacy. -- Al

O's have 5 dingers through 4 innings, the Oriole record is 8 for a single game set in 2015, still at least 4 more innings to go.

Not sure even uBADo could blow the game at this point, leading 8-1, so maybe miracles (liberally supported by Hrs) do happen. Now excuse me while I go find some wood to knock on.:wink2: -- Al

Well he sure as hell surprised me today, going nearly 6 full innings and giving up only a run, got hit around on hits (9) and a few walks but he kept it at 1 run, that's the name of the game, maybe, just maybe after 3 good outings from Ubaldo in a row now, there is some sort, kind of, maybe a ray of hope for the guy as a starter over the next month and a half, we need it that's for sure.

Nats won today, 9-4 over the Cubs. Fedde did ok, but trailed Lester 4-1 after 6. Got Lester out of the game and then lowered the boom on the Cubs bullpen, scoring the last 8 runs of the game, including a Wieters GS. Escaped Chicago with a 2-1 series win after starting our #4,5, and 6 starters. A good weekend. -- Al

Mets are taking it on the chin again from LA. The Dodgers are a team you don't want to play right now! If they win tonight, they will be on a pace to win 115, one of the greatest regular seasons ever.

I see that, but I was a little shocked to see Matz getting beat up, again. What has happened to him? He's given up 29 earned runs in his last 20 innings over 6 starts. Just seems to have totally lost it. -- Al

I'm not sure of his issue but he's been bad this year. Ron Darling was on the radio the other day and said he needs to correct a couple of flaws but wouldn't specify what they were so as to not tip off the opposition. Memo to Ron: I think they know the flaws!

The Giants have won 2 in a row against a pretty good Arizona team. It is by no means a huge winning streak but I'll take it.
