2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (1 Viewer)

All of these teams have flaws, which is why we have a tight race but I can't see the WC winner being a serious challenge to the Astros. The Yankees are drawing nearer to the Red Sox so the AL East is in play.

In the NL, the Dodgers are drawing water and so are the Rockies, which is allowing the Brewers and Cards to make it interesting.

I suppose the Dodgers couldn't keep up the pace that they were on, especially when there is nothing to play for. However, 1-9 is not a good looking number.

The Angels beat Oakland 11-9 in 11 innings yesterday. What was different about this game was the time it took to play 11 innings, an achingly long 4:38, and the MLB record 12 pitchers used by the Angels! The starter only lasted 3 innings but the 12 pitchers included 3 who never recorded an out and 2 others who pitched less than an inning. MLB needs to revisit the whole concept of using as many pitchers as one wants. Perhaps requiring any pitcher used to record at least 1 out or maybe a maximum number of pitchers per 9 inning game. I've always hated the 'match-up' theory of pitching that can end up using 3 or 4 pitchers in an inning. It is an issue that needs to be addressed in terms of pace and time, even if this one game is just a 'one-of-a-kind'. It can certainly happen again. -- Al

I'm sorry but that makes no sense at all. Why shouldn't a team use all the weapons at its disposal. Suppose the one out minimum rule is in effect, what if the pitcher is ineffective and can't record an out and gives up seven runs in the process.

I'm quite sure that had the Orioles use 12 pitchers to beat a team you wouldn't be suggesting this.

Let each team in the WC race use all the weapons it has to win the race.

Me thinks it's a bit of sour grapes :wink2:

Agreed! I'd like to say they're chocking but it's worse. Yeah, they couldn't keep the pace up.
However, It seems crazy but Dave Roberts (manager) has become overly cautious with player usage and health concerns (even the small ones) that I'm afraid complacency has set in.

The Manager - Dave Roberts, Managers became complacent, over confident and cautious. A combination of pulling 2-3 regulars out of the lineup daily to ensure minor injuries don’t become major ones.

Complacency – Wake up Dodgers, still a month to go in the season and all teams still want to beat the best team in the majors! The Dodger train has fallen off the tracks and they can’t get up again!

Starting Pitchers Stamina – They haven’t done well recently but have been great until now. However, even when great, they only pitch about 5 innings!!!! That’s why they have 5-6 man rotation!!!
This requires a bullpen of 6-7 relievers to take up the slack. When does being too cautious become coddling and actually effect a player’s stamina. Check out how many innings their staring pitching have to date. Click here
Is the Dodgers rotation too brittle? Not good for Dodger fans.

Diamondbacks Mid-Season Trade Brilliance : Kudos to them, they got a 2 for 1 out of the deal. They got a great right-handed hitter (JD Martinez) from the Tigers to beef up their line-up and the antidote against the Dodgers starting pitching dominated by excellent lefthanders (Kershaw, Hill, Wood, Rye).
Maybe, you can say it was a 3 for 1, because deal was done well in advance of trade deadline during the Dodgers historical winning streak. Therefore, nabbed the best righthanded hitter available and depriving the Dodgers a power hitter in their left handed dominated batting lineup. JD Martinez - Payback is a “Bxtch”!

I haven't given up but I'm not going to rationalize the current realities either. Dodgers you are not the anointed ones you're going to have to earn this one like everyone else!

Carlos,

I'm sure they're going to be fine. Even with losing 9 out of 10, they still have a 13 game lead. Now, that's security. I remember back in the late 90s or 2000, I can't remember which, the Yankees had a huge lead in their division in September and almost blew it and went on to win the WS.

Brad, my complaint has nothing to do with the Angels winning. My complaint is simply old school disgust with the trend to using so many pitchers and the overall trend of SP going fewer and fewer innings. Believe me, if the O's ever use 12 pitchers in a game, win or lose, you will hear me raising a stink over it, as well. I know it is never going to happen in today's game, but I love the days when a starter would go 7,8, or 9 innings, and, MAYBE, a total of 2 or 3 pitchers might get used. Pace was faster, time was shorter, and the game more enjoyable, IMO. Oh for the days of the Complete Game by the SP. :wink2: -- Al

Fair points Al. I think the Commissioner has raised concerns about the number of relief pitchers and their effect on length of games. Four and a half hours is way too long. Back up until the 70s st least most games would be over in two hours. That's a thing of the past.

Brad

Today is the 10th anniversary of Barry Bonds last home run, career #762. Why do I mention this? Because of the unlikely connection to the Baltimore Orioles. It just so happens that the pitcher who gave up #762 is none other than the O's uBADo Jimenez. Happy Anniversary. -- Al

I will make all of you feel better about your teams. I actually started off the season with World Series aspirations for the Giants. Then I changed to hoping that they would win their division, then I hoped for the Wild-Card and then, last but not least (pun intended), I hoped that they would not finish in last place. Now, my last hope is that the Giants do not lose 100 games.

:(

I'm right with you brother! The Mets beat reporter was on the radio earlier and painted a very bleak picture. First, Conforto won't be available to practice until March, the manager is probably gone at the end of this season, who knows if Céspedes can play a full year, Harvey is awful, Matz is always hurt and so forth. I could go on but I don't want to bore you. I can see a 70 win season next year. At least seats will be cheap.

Pouring in B-more so the game start is delayed. It is the 18th time this season rain has delayed a game in B-more. {eek3} -- Al

6-2 MFY's after four; you probably should have kept doing your rain dance.................

The parade of pitchers is starting for the Angels: Garrett Richards (who is on a pitch count, just having returned after from injury) has been pulled in the 4th.

O's Hr barrage has closed it to 6-5 and CC is knocked out in the 6th. -- Al
Machado strikes again! A walk-off HR with 2 out in the 9th and the O's win it 7-6. In a hole again, 6-1, the O's come from behind once again. They now lead the majors in walk-off wins. Man, if this team had a decent starting rotation they would own the AL East. The Vampires of MLB prove it takes more than a little adversity to kill them. -- Al

The Red Sox are being accused by the Yankees of stealing signs, not the old fashioned way, but with Apple Watches. MLB investigators have corroborated the Yankees' claims but it's yet to be determined what penalties the Commissioner may impose.

Must be something in the Massachusetts water :rolleyes2:

I read on ESPN that although no precedent exists for it, the rules of MLB allow the Commish to penalize the offending team by taking away victories. Now wouldn't that make for interesting reading? I can't imagine the uproar such a penalty would cause but such a draconian penalty sure would be different from the usual 'hands-off' attitude that is usual in most cases that MLB deals with. -- Al

In other scandal news, Craig Carton, who is a co-host of a very popular sports radio show on WFAN in NY with Boomer Esiason (Boomer and Carton), has been arrested by the FBI for allegedly running a fake ticket scam, bilking investors out of millions of dollars.

Well, it's never dull around here.

On similar note, U of Louisville is in peril of losing their last BBall Championship as a result of the sex in the athletic dorm scandal. Seemingly, UNC will not face such a penalty for their unprecedented academic scandal. Chris
