2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (1 Viewer)

Stop the presses! For the first time in almost 4 months, Dusty is able to put all his starters on the field in the starting line-up in tonight's game. It's about time. -- Al

I must have missed something with the O's and Bundy. He was apparently shut-down. He has only started 3 games this month, the last one on 9/18. He was 0-1 in those 3 starts. Don't know if he is hurt, reached an innings limit, or what. My guess is he is just tired out, judging by his September stats, having allowed 12 earned runs over the 14.1 innings in 3 starts. Too bad because the O's really needed their best SP this month. -- Al

O's now 7-19 this month and are tied for the cellar in the AL East. This is a total collapse, no pitching, no offense. Maybe they can rally a bit of pride and stay out of the cellar, or at least tie, by winning their last 2 games. I'm not holding my breath.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Strasburg continued his superlative second half of the season by winning on a 7.2 inning outing, allowing 2 hits and 0 runs. It is the 6th outing in 8 since coming off the DL that he has allowed 0 runs. His second half ERA is 0.86, the second lowest ERA in MLB history for a pitcher with at least 10 starts in the second half. Hope he keeps in rolling for the playoffs.:wink2: -- Al

The O's ended their series against the NYY's with a 7-12 record. They were outscored 154 to 88, an average of NY 7.1 RPG, O's 4.6 RPG. In the long history of the NYY's, they have never scored more runs against any team in a given season. Could it be, oh, I don't know...the PITCHING!?:rolleyes2: -- Al

The Giants got win #63 last night, avoiding the dreaded 100 lose season!

However they could not score any runs for Matt Cain today who made is final appearance before retiring. He got the no decision after he went 5 innings and only gave up 2 hits. Every Giant fan knows that they would not have won three World Series in recent years without him. I for one wish him well with thanks for his contributions.

I saw the Giants won #63 and breathed a sigh of relief. Too bad they couldn't score for Cain. Would have been nice to see him go out on a win. It is rare to see a player spend his whole career with one team these days, especially a pitcher. -- Al

George, congratulations on the Sox taking the East title. -- Al

Thanks Al; wasn't easy, came down to game 161, but they got it done.

Farrell for all the abuse he takes is the first Red Sox manager to ever win back to back AL East titles, hard to believe but true.

Their pitching will be lined up now with Sale going in game one; their bullpen with Smith in the 7th, Reed in the 8th and Kimbrel in the 9th is lights out, not to mention Price has become quite a weapon out of the bullpen, like Francoma uses Miller.

If their young players come through this year and don't shrink under the pressure, we'll see what happens, but I'd be stunned if it isn't AAAstros/Indians in the ALCS.

October baseball; there's nothing quite like it....................

Congrats George to you and your Red Sox in winning the AL East title, surely a crazy ride all year for the East but your boys deserve the hard fought crown.

As far as my O's it all comes down to the last day of the season on Sunday!!! will it be the O's or the Jays to take the title of the worst team in the East!!!! both teams are exactly 75-86, with the exact run scoring diff.of a -92!!!!! crazy odds there, but in all seriousness as much as my O's had their ups and downs I'd never thought they would fold like a cheap tent until these last few weeks :(:( even back in late August after sweeping the Sox in Boston and only a game out of the WC this team had some magic, but to no avail, after that last series loss to the evil Yanks in Baltimore this team cashed in their chips and walked away, not sure what the future holds for this team??? big contracts with little to show for it, another 14 year rebuild??? why not, wouldn't be the 1st time.

Thanks Sammy; kind of shocked to read today they are tied with Toronto for last place, they really did nosedive down the stretch, after they swept the Red Sox in Boston, I thought they'd be in the hunt right until the end for that second wild card spot.

Not sure what to make of that finish to be honest, they are way too talented a team to be in last place...............

This has been an ugly collapse. After staying in contention all year, I never saw this coming. Thought they might just squeak by and get in or just miss out, but never expected everyone to go in the dumper together. I mean, 7-20 during the crucial month of September? Just awful. No pitching (nothing new there) but the offensive failure surprises me. I guess it shouldn't though, as the O's went through stretches of bad offense this year. In 74 of their games, they scored 3 or fewer runs and in 50 of those, it was 2 or fewer runs. You can't win many games scoring like that, at least not enough. Combined with a SP ERA north of 5, I guess the results were predictable, which makes their staying in the race as long as they did pretty remarkable and a tribute to Buck's managing. Now it is up to ownership to find Buck 3 decent starting pitchers in the off-season to go with Bundy and Gausman, or O's fans can look forward to more frustration in 2018. -- Al

George:

Congrats on taking the East.

That is an amazing stat about Farrell, I would have never guessed that one.

Thanks Jason; one WS title and three division titles and we've got morons up here who keep calling for his head.

He's also the only Red Sox manager to win three AL East titles as well.

How can people be upset by success? Some fans will never be satisfied short of going undefeated and even then they will find something to complain about. Morons is right. -- Al

O's finish their September collapse with a 6-0 loss, awarding them sole ownership of last place in the AL East. Looks like all the pre-season predictions were accurate. Very disappointing that they couldn't even muster the 1 win to at least tie for 4th spot as they finish with a 5 game losing streak. Cellar Dwellers is not a title to relish. Kind of embarrassing to go 7-21 the last month of the season and win the race to the basement.:redface2: Opening Day is March 29, 2018, so SIGN SOME DECENT STARTING PITCHING!!! -- Al

Nats are taking a beating today as Dusty has pulled his regulars after a couple of innings to get them their recognition from the home crowd. Been a very successful regular season for the Core 4 as Rendon finishes with a .301 BA, 25 Hr's, and 100 RBI's. Murphy finishes with a .322 BA, 23 Hr's, and 93 RBI's. Zimmerman had a spectacular year with a .303 BA, 36 Hr's, and 108 RBI's. Harper only played in 111 games due to injury but still finished with a .319 BA, 29 Hr's, and 87 RBI's. The Nats starting pitchers, the BIG 3, also had good years. Scherzer finished 16-6 with a 2.51 ERA (with 3 shortened starts due to health issues). Strasburg finished 15-4 with a 2.52 ERA (missed 4/5 starts with injury). Gonzalez will finish 15-9 with a 2.96 ERA (his best year since 2012). Now all they have to do is find a way to get past the first round of the playoffs to make this a really successful season. If they don't, with this team, there will be disappointment and finger pointing, (by me, anyway:wink2:). -- Al

Mets are taking a beating too. Syndergaard pitched two innings and looked very sharp.

It's Terry's last game; he's resigning after the game. He's the chosen scapegoat for a season that went off the rails which wasn't his fault.

I can't recall a team that lost 4 ace starting pitchers for all or part of the season and could cover the loss. Collins got caught in a no-win situation. If those 4 guys all recover, the Mets are right back in it next season. -- Al

Yup, it was a tough season, both for me and Jason.

Good luck against the Cubs. Hope Scherzer is ok for the playoffs. Hope you guys get it done this year.

Brad
