2018 Baseball season (1 Viewer)

The Giants simply can't play consistent baseball. When they get great pitching (Cueto) they can't score any runs, then they score 6 runs today but give up 15 (so far today).

The O's are having trouble scoring runs. Part of the problem are injuries to Trumbo and Schoop. Part of the problem is a so-so start by Adam Jones. A big part of the problem is the continuing lack of production by Chris Davis. His numbers have been on the decline since 2016, in BA., Hr's, RBI's, etc. His strikeouts have always been high, about a 1/3 of his at-bats, but he is now taking a lot of called 3rd strikes as well. Since the start of 2017, he has taken 84 called 3rd strikes, the most in baseball. In 25 games this season, he is batting .167, with 2 Hr's and 6 RBI's (33 K's in 90 Abs). Davis is too big a part of the O's offense for this to continue and the O's have any chance of getting well. If nothing else, Davis needs to take the bat off his shoulder and swing. Called 3rd strikes are useless, At least a swing gives the batter a chance of connecting. -- Al

The Nats are still playing like crap. They are 12-16. Last year they were 17-8 by the end of April. Granted, they are still missing key offensive players Murphy, Eaton, and Rendon, but they had hurt players last year too. The big difference is that the replacement players aren't producing this year like they did last year. Throw in bullpen struggles (like last year) and it is a formula for losing, which is what they are doing. They just sputter along, and combined with the outstanding years being turned in by NY, Philly, and Atlanta, they are falling off the pace by the day. I can only hope they get healthy and turn this all around before they bury themselves. Rizzo might have to work some more of his bullpen magic, like he did last year, for this all to really change, though.:rolleyes2: -- Al

They're within hailing distance and once they Murphy and Rendon back, I'm sure they will play better. It's very hard to make up for their losses. Speaking of Murphy, are the Nats talking contract with him. I realize that Rizzo has Harper concerns on his mind but they have to get Murphy into the fold. If Harper leaves though, that will give Murphy leverage.

Interesting question about Murphy, but I have heard nothing at all in regards to him. Nats are notoriously close-mouthed about contracts and negotiations but I certainly agree that the Nats need to keep him and not leave it all to the last minute. Still have no real clue as to how the whole Harper thing is going to play out. If he commands the money that everyone thinks he will, it might be smarter to let him go and use the resulting free money to lock up Murphy, Rendon, etc. -- Al

The Giants have clawed into second place in the NL West with a 15-14 record.

That doesn't seem like much until you look at the AL Central where the Tigers are in second with an 11-16 record. 11-16 in second place?

Giants have done a great job of hanging in while fighting through the injuries. -- Al

Al:

They are doing better than I expected with all of the injuries.

Once Bumgarner comes back they might even have a chance to win the West.

Speaking of which, I see Bums has been cleared to start throwing...just as Cueto goes on the 10-day DL. It's always something.:rolleyes2: -- Al

As to the AL Central (aka, MLB's weak sister), there are 5 teams in MLB that are still in the single-digit win column and 3 of those teams are in the AL Central (Twins, Chisox, and KC). The other 2 are the Reds and O's. AL Central champ might take it with 82 wins.:rolleyes2: -- Al

I find that I miss Nolan Ryan on the baseball field, mainly because he was such a freak of nature as a pitcher. Followed him his whole career. Every time he went to the mound, the potential for baseball history existed. Every fan knows he holds the record for career no-hitters with 7, 3 more than Koufax's 2nd place total of 4. But how many know that he threw 12 1-hitters. as well? Or that he had 18 2-hitters? In addition to the 7 no-hitters, Ryan had 5 other no-hit bids broken up in the 9th inning. He threw 37 complete games in which he gave up a grand total of 48 hits (that's in 333 innings, give or take an inning). Just a freak of nature. -- Al

Well after burping and farting through the first three weeks of the season, looks like the gashouse gorillas have gotten their act together, swept the Angels over the weekend, ripped off something like 9 in a row before losing 2-1 to the AAAstros, they won again last night to start another 9 or 100 game winning streak.

Bad enough they have Quasimodo and Mongo hitting home runs, now Sanchez must be on the strength and conditioning program in Da Bronx and he's hitting bombs all over the place, the three of them will probably hit 200 home runs.

My 162-0 prediction is a bit off, more like 150-12 now, I don't see a team in either league that can take them in a seven game series.

Might as well start getting banner #28 ready, right Louis, must be nice rooting for Microsoft....................................

After a brilliant start (that was obviously a mirage) the Mets are headed in the opposite direction. Not only are they not hitting but deGrom left with an injury last night; the results of the MRI are not known yet.

Hope he's ok. -- Al

After 2 games with Harper batting leadoff (for the first times since 2013), the results are positive but unlikely to be a permanent fix to the problem of Harper being pitched around. Harper will move back to his #3 spot, just a question of when. Currently, Harper has no protection at #3, with Murphy and Rendon out, and Zimmerman not hitting. Harper is seeing nothing to hit at #3, the lowest percentage of strikes in baseball, plus the highest number of walks (39 in 31 games), so the move was to get him some pitches to hit and maybe jump-start him and the offense. In the 2 games at leadoff, Harper is 4-8 (1 BB), with 2 Hr's and 6 RBI's, with the Nats scoring 21 runs. Big improvement but just not a permanent solution. Right now, it is working and that's all that counts. The Nats need the runs and the wins. -- Al

ESPN reporting that deGrom is ok. MRI results were negative and he's cleared for his next start. Good news. -- Al

State of the Art...to date, MLB has had 7501 total hits...and 7813 total strikeouts. Swing batter, batter, batter! :rolleyes2: -- Al

Mets are getting roasted today (11-0 in the 7th) and no hit. What a complete joke. 4th place any day.

Is that just the Oriole batters??...:)
Guilty as charged. As a team, the O's have 229 hits to 286 K's. Only 3 starters are on the plus side; Jones by 1; Mancini by 2; Machado is +24 (of course). Take those 3 out of the equation and the O's have 130 hits to 214 K's. Not a pretty picture. -- Al
