2018 Baseball season (2 Viewers)

The MFY's took two of three from the Blue Jays over the weekend thanks largely to that chrome domed pain in the balls Gardner; if there's a more annoying pain in the *** in all of MLB, I'd like to meet him or as Giradi called him "Gardy"...……………...I call him coconut head.

Speaking of the LET'S GO O'S!!, I read a report that it looks like the Brewers, Dodgers and Indians are all in on Machado. Also, the GM and manager are likely goners at the end of the year. The same article said the team is hamstrung for a long time with that Davis contract, so Britton and Jones are likely to be dealt, probably Dumbo too.

Their minor league system is a tire fire, so whoever they get in return for their stars had better be good or else they could be in the cellar for a long time.

Oof………….
Yeah, there is a bit of disarray in the front office about who is in charge of making the deals, etc. Not a pretty picture. -- Al

That's exactly what the article stated, no one knows who's going to make the deals.

It could get real ugly.

My Cousin just texted me this;

Red Sox
1978 62-29
2018 62-29

For the love of Christ, let's have a different result this time.

However, the Yankees record on July 8, 1978 was only 46-37. This is not the

What is was was a monumental choke job, an epic gag, they blew a 14 game lead, then battled back to tie for the lead and then they blew the playoff game too.

So pre 2004 Red Sox.

Thank GOD for 2004.

Sad to think how many fans died after 1978 and pre 2004 and never got to see them win it all, including both of my grandfathers and two of my uncles.

Really sad.

Lot of franchises like that like the Cubs and the Lions in the NFL.

There aren't "lots" of franchises with a tortured history like the Red Sox.

They sold Babe Ruth to the MFY's, 1946, 1967, 1972 (lost the AL East by 1/2 game largely thanks to Luis Aparicio falling down rounding third base), 1974 (blew an 8 game lead to the LET'S GO O'S!!), 1975, 1978, 1986 and 2003.

They lost four WS in seven games, each loss more painful than the last.

The Cubs the most part were a broken toilet of a franchise, they had the longest streak between WS wins, but how many WS did they get to in that time? They are most famous for blowing the ALCS to the Padres in 1984 and Bartmann in 2003.

That's about it.

The Lions? They've never been to a Super Bowl, been to one NFCCG in their entire history and got demolished by the Redskins.

I'd compare the Red Sox to the Browns, famous for The Drive, The Fumble and Sipe throwing an INT in the End Zone vs the Raiders in the 1980 playoffs when all they needed was a FG to win the game.

Maybe the Bills and their four strait losses in the SB, or the Vikings, four SB losses, none of those games were even competitive, one of the greatest franchises that could never get over the hump. Throw the Capitals in there too, one nut punch loss in the playoffs after another until this year.

So, there aren't "lots."

Saw this stat; Chris Davis broke the all-time Orioles record for strikeouts.

He passed Cal Ripken, Jr.

Cal played in 2,027 more Oriole games than Davis.

That is...……………..not good.

The historical 'landmarks' continue to pile up for this season's O's, both team and individually.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Davis whiffed (so far) 1306 times in 3531 AB's, over 974 games with the O's. Ripken fanned 1305 times in 11551 AB's, over 3001 games. Davis actually has 1608 career whiffs in 4413 AB's. As a matter of interest, HoFer Tony Gwynn fanned 434 times in 9288 AB's in a 20 year career.
One might also note that Davis has a current 7 year contract worth some $160 million, while Cal Ripken earned $70 million over the length of his career. Bang for the buck.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Meanwhile the Nats get a 10 RBI game from a guy making $1 mil.

I attended my first MLB game in about 25 years over the weekend. Great weather. Even though I live in PA, I didn't know the name of a single players on either the Pirates or Phillies team. I recognized more player names on the jerseys in the crowd from yesteryear than players on the field (Schmidt, Stargell, Clemente). Even though they have some sort of clock now to move the game along it took 2 1/2 hours to play the first five innings. When all was said and done the game took almost five hours to complete and ended 17-5.

Pace of play continues to be a problem. Yesterday, the Nats game started 45 minutes before the O's game. Both went 9 innings, one ended 10-1 (O's lost) and the other ended 10-2 (Nats lost). Now that seems pretty even up but the Nats game ended 30 or more minutes after the O's game. The Nats took 4 hours or so to play the same 9 innings with an almost identical score that the O's played in an hour or so less. -- Al

The game I attended started at 7:05 and the fifth inning ended at about 9:30. I left at that point but the game went on until nearly midnight. That makes for about a 6-8 hour event for fans to get to the ballpark, watch the game, and get home. I can't imagine there were too many people in the seats at the end. Reducing the games to seven innings would help. The baseball purists would likely stroke out, but it would be a God send to baseball. I was also amazed at the number of fans constantly going to and from their seats during the breaks and even between batters. Every aisle looked like a colony of ants moving up and down the aisles during the game.

A 4 hour plus game is a bit unusual. The remaining games in this series were under three hours each, which is normal.

It’s useless to suggest the game be shortened to seven innings as that will never happen, nor should it although it’s possible that may happen with extra inning games. What other sport has shortened it’s length of games. Moreover, fans don’t want it nor will the players ever permit it. I love it how fans who haven’t attended a game in 25 years come up with suggestions.

Agree about the game not be shortened in terms of innings. 9 innings is baseball, pure and simple. I see no reason to reduce the number of innings. The game has just become longer because of the way it is played today. When I was a kid, an inning, both top and bottom, could be counted on to last 15 minutes and a game 2 1/2 hours, max. The biggest culprit, in my eyes, to the longer games of today are the numerous trips to the mound and the numerous pitching changes, as many as 4 in a half inning. If the game is to be altered, perhaps it should be with rules to restrict the number of changes or perhaps a pitch clock. -- Al

Baseball is a nine inning game, no periods, quarters, halves or clocks; that is the beauty of it, it's over when the last out is made.

Having played the game for over 30 years, it never bothered me when I was on the field as to the pace of the game.

Now that I am no longer on the field, it still doesn't bother me.

And it never will.

I am with George on this. The fact that there is no clock, no timeouts etc. is part of what makes the game so great.

Besides, I enjoy the long games.

Hey George, to further the point about Davis passing Ripken for the O's whiff record, your hero, Aaron Judge of the MFY's, just passed Joe Dimaggio's career strikeout total. Joe D played 13 years, 1736 games with 6821 ABs and struck out 369 times. Judge is in his 3rd year, has played 267 games with 944 ABs, and has struck out 370 times. Pretty impressive, eh? :rolleyes2: -- Al
