2018 Baseball season (3 Viewers)

Al thanks...

wow...that sucked for Boston...

so what are the rules on calling a game early before it goes in the books?
I'm not sure what defines a suspended game as opposed to a game that is wiped out, like the Red Sox game last night. I know a game has to go 5 innings to be official but at what point a game can be suspended as opposed to cancelled...^&confuse -- Al

well...if 5 completed innings is the rule...then that's the rule for everyone...so I guess it's fair...
just kind of surprised they even started those games with the predicted weather...

why are the Yankees so far behind the other teams in games finished?
will they make them up to finish in the same time frame as the other teams?

Brad...

thank you...

the link you provided is informative...

these 2 rules are especially interesting...

(7) The game has not become a regulation game (41⁄2 innings with the home team ahead, or 5 innings with the visiting club ahead or tied);

(8) If a game is suspended before it becomes a regulation game, and is continued prior to another regularly scheduled game, the regularly scheduled game shall be seven innings in length. See the exception described in Rule 7.01(a) (Rule 4.10(a));

the more I watch...the more I'm realizing how much I don't know about baseball...

Vagaries of the weather have put the NYY's somewhat behind, but not far. They have played 100 games while most seem to have played 101-103. The Braves have only played 98. The games will be made up on off days or as double-headers. There is a possibility that a game or two would not be made up if the game made no difference to the playoff race. -- Al

Ain't that the truth. I'm still learning, as well, and I have been a baseball nut since 1961. ^&grin -- Al

Anyone besides a Red Sox fan notice that J.D. Martinez is making a very viable run at the Triple Crown? Putting up some great numbers as he leads in Hr's and RBI's, and is third in BA. -- Al

Noticed Bartolo Colon just turned 45. He is in a position to become the all-time winningest Hispanic pitcher in MLB history. Colon is in his 21st season, and has a career record of 242-178 with a 4.04 ERA. He currently trails 2 men, Dennis Martinez who accumulated a 245-193 record with a 3.70 ERA over 23 years, and HoFer Juan Marichal, who went 243-142 with a 2.89 ERA over 16 seasons. So, 4 more wins gives Colon the mantle, and given the pitching problems in Texas, Colon should have plenty of chances to win the 4 games needed. He is in heady company with his fellow Dominican Juan Marichal. Marichal won 20 or more games 6 times, had 244 complete games and 52 shutouts, as well as being the leading winner in MLB during the 1960's, a decade that included such legends as Koufax and Gibson. Although Martinez never won 20 games, he managed to complete 122 games, throw 30 shutouts, and pitch 4000 innings, not too shabby. Colon has won 20 or more twice, has 13 shutouts and pitched 3372 innings to date, impressive totals. Colon won't make the HoF, and Martinez certainly isn't, but Colon has the chance to make his mark alongside of Martinez and Marichal, even though Martinez and Colon aren't the pitchers Marichal was. Colon's career marks are nothing to sneeze at. Happy Birthday, Bartolo. -- Al
Colon starts tonight for Texas in what will be his 4th attempt to win his #246th career win. He is currently tied with Dennis Martinez for the most wins by a Latino pitcher in MLB history. Still doubt he has a realistic shot at the HoF (his ERA is career ERA is 4.07) but he has accumulated some big career numbers. Go Bartolo! -- Al

I think Oakland is one of the most under rated teams in the AL...they have not lost a series since back to June 14th...and look like they have a pretty soft schedule in the second half just seeing Seattle 3 more time...Houston twice and the Yankees once...not seeing Boston again...I bet they will pass Seattle and take the last playoff spot...this is a good team that is red hot...

And they A's are doing that with the 3rd lowest payroll in MLB. At $74 mil only the Rays and White Sox spend less. Even the Marlins spend more than the A's.

I am ashamed to call myself a Giants fan after the crowd booed Josh Hader at last night's game at AT&T Park.

His apology was contrite and he was backed up by his teammates.

Contrite how? Chalking it off to alleged immaturity? Of course, he was contrite, he was caught. What’s he going to say, “yes, I’m proud to hate black people and gays.”

There is no other record of him saying or doing anything similar since then. His teammates have backed that up.

I’m not sure that proves anything other than that he did not express these thoughts in writing or was not caught doing so. If you want to take the side of such a person that is your person but the Giants crowd was right as was the Commissioner in ordering him to undergo training.

Twitter can be a great platform and I find it very useful but it has its dark side and you have to be careful what you say on there. It can come back to haunt you.

The crowd was wrong to react the way it did. I do agree that MLB was correct in requiring him to attend sensitivity training and participation in diversity and inclusion initiatives. As part of that he had to meet with MLB's diversity and inclusion officer Billy Bean who following the meeting said:

"I was really convinced after a couple hours together today—much longer than we expected—that his experience as an athlete and a professional in an integrated, diverse environment has created the person that he is today,"

I also agree with you that Twitter can cut both ways. Lorenzo Cain used this incident as one of the reasons why he doesn't partake in social media.

Gonna need another shot at #246 as the A's beat him 7-6 leaving him 5-9 with a 5.02 ERA on the season. -- Al

Find myself wondering how bad the 52-51 Nats would be if they didn't have the Marlins to beat up on. Nats won 9-1 against the Marlins tonight, making them 8-1 on the season against the Marlins. Scherzer got his 14th win and fanned 11, which gives him an even 200 on the season and giving him 7 consecutive seasons with 200+ strikeouts. All the Nats need to do now is play the Marlins another 40 or so times.:rolleyes2: -- Al

I read today that the Dodgers have approached the Nats about Harper. Whether it was just a casual conversation or something more than that wasn’t evident.
