2018 Baseball season (2 Viewers)

I think this started to change when football and basketball players started celebrations and showed more flair. However, I think things really started to change with the influx of the Latino player.

Yeah, I get the whole "Latino's are emotional and passionate people" angle.

I played semi pro baseball in Boston with and against many Latinos, one of my teammates was Pablo Reyes, he was a fireballing lefty who had a cup of coffee in the show with the Devil Rays, he was extremely talented but never was over the top with his celebrations, so were most of the Latino players, nothing like you see today.

Puig should slather himself with mustard before taking the field, he's the biggest hot dog I've ever seen between the white lines.

Dial it down a couple of notches, show a little respect for the game and your opponents.

Just to be clear I never said Latinos are an emotional and passionate people as that would be engaging in stereotypes.

Ok, so then what did you mean by "I think things really started to change with the influx of the Latino player"

If my memory serves me, the Latin player influx started in the mid/late 50's and 60's and there was none of this choreographed crap then. Players like Clemente, Cepeda, the Alou's, Oliva, Carew, etc. just did their jobs like the pros they were. Maybe they brought a little more expressive enthusiasm to the game, but certainly nothing like the stuff that goes on today. All the crap going on today is just unseemly and classless, regardless of who's doing it. It needs to be dialed down. -- Al

Why does it have to be dialed down?

Perhaps, instead of focusing on particular groups, because engaging in attributing qualities to certain ethnic groups can be dangerous (and I admit an error in doing so), it’s more of a generational shift. Players like Clemente are of a different generation. The US was sort of a button down country — don’t show emotions, be controlled and so forth. People playing in sports would tend to follow that ethos. However, with the advent of the 60s, the counter culture and so forth — the “don’t be so uptight man” attitude — society has over the years changed where people feel less inhibited.

It’s not necessarily all positive but the loosening of restrictions, control, inhibitions, call it what you will is now reflected in all societal endeavors, including sports. Some don’t like it but I think people younger than us like it and certainly don’t have an issue with it.

I'm not attributing the celebration crap to any one group. It's all across all sports, by all players. I simply don't like it because of the reasons I stated, it shows up the opponent and I find it classless. It's just my opinion. As you point out, it is a generational thing but I have always been an understated type of person and I simply dislike all the hoopla. Nothing more complicated than that. -- Al

Whenever I see these choreographed end zone celebrations and handshakes, I think of the great Jim Brown and his comment "act like you've been there before"...…………..

As I said, I played baseball for a long time. THE only time I ever remember overly celebrating was during a playoff game on a Friday night on a hot August night about 30 years ago. The locals were giving it to me good, serenading me with "STERRROIDS, STERRROIDS, STERROIDS....."; at first, I had no clue it was me they were riding until one of my teammates pointed it out.

My first time up, I got a classic brush back pitch, a player on the other bench muttered "Don't drill Canseco, he might charge the mound and rip you in half"...……………….two pitches later, I hit a ball that should be landing in Europe shortly, the right fielder didn't even move, he just stood there.

As I rounded the bases, I had one arm in the air, when I got to the plate, I stomped on it and looked at a bunch of opposing team fans behind the backstop and said "THAT was for all of you, nothing to do with steroids either"...……………….

So there you have it.

Ok, back to the discussion.

I wouldn't be so quick in writing off LA. This postseason reminds me of 1988. In 1988, LA down 2-1 in games, played a long night game against NY, which they won in 12 innings, and then they had a quick turnaround the next day (game 4 ended at 1230am and game 5 started at 1220pm) which LA won to take command of the series. The Mets won game 6 but LA won game 7, with Hershiser making an appearance. The same happened here, the only difference being that in 88 LA won the decisive game 4 on the road. Interestingly, game 4 in the 2018 NLCS took 13 innings and ended around 230am and game 5 started at 505pm, almost the same situation as 1988. They then faced a team, the As, against which they were given no chance. We know what happened. LA is not being given much of a chance this year against baseball's best team but don't write them off just yet. The similarities, at least to me, are a little eerie.

Don't get me wrong, I think that LA is a good baseball team, I just think that Boston is better.

In a one off I would give LA much better odds, but in a 7 game series I don't think they have much of a chance. In 2018 Boston only lost 3 games in a row.

The end should have read:

In 2018 Boston only lost 3 games in a row 4 times.

Only the 2nd but Kershaw just seems off. He's gotten ahead on the count but can't finish.

He’s not going to last. It’s only the third, the score is tied and he’s up to 67.
Yeah, hasn't been the pitching duel I was expecting and certainly looks as though the pens will be engaged early. -- Al

I hate when there is a shot to the left field wall in Boston ....to see the AL East standings with that Oriole record just reminds me how bad 2018 was all over.

That was a good first game, lots of back and forth. Boston can beat you so many ways, the Dodgers simply could not keep pace.

The results so far can hardly be a surprise. Boston has been the best team all season and continues to be so. LA had better find a quick solution or I can see a sweep in the offing. -- Al

The Red Sox are just relentless, they couldn't do anything against that junk baller, two outs, no one on, #9 hitter up, then a single, single, two walks and a base hit and three runs later, they took the lead and never looked back. After the Puig RBI single, they retired 15 strait Dodgers.

The bullpen continues to be money, Kimbrel is no longer broken, he's back to being lights out.

The Dodgers were dressed tonight like they were going to the south pole with Shackleton.

Regardless of what happens in LA, worst case scenario is they come home down 3-2, it's a great feeling knowing that, with probably Price/Eovaldi for games 6 and 7.

Again, that's the worst case scenario.

It's on to LA.

Like the reference to the South Pole and Shackleton. Thing is, Shackleton and his men survived. I would compare the current situation with LA to more like the death march to the South Pole with Scott. He didn't come back and it doesn't look like LA will either. -- Al
