2018 Baseball season (2 Viewers)

Congrats to George, Boston fans and the Red Sox. They are the beast of the East.

Wish the season wasn’t over but that’s a wrap on another season.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone, wire to wire they were the best team in baseball and they proved it by winning another WS title.

12-3 in the playoffs, 8-1 on the road, tremendous two out production, so clutch.

And the much maligned bullpen was nails all playoffs long.

Needless to say, it was a fun ride, winning championships never, ever gets old.

Time to put a bow on this one, been another fun MLB season thread, thanks to everyone for your contributions.

As a Red Sox fan, I've gone from cursed to blessed, 4 titles in 15 years.

It seems like a dream, but it's reality.

Congrats to George and his Red Sox....again!!!!!

Been a pleasure chewing the raw hide with you all this season, let's do it again in a few short months!!!

The Red Sox were clearly the best team this year. They steamrolled some very good teams in the playoffs. 5-1 on the road against the Astros and Dodgers. Just too good.

This may come as a shock but the Mets aren’t the favorites to land Manny {eek3}

The Phillies are the favorites followed by

Dodgers
Yankees
Marlins
Angels
Braves
Nationals

Even the Marlins are rated higher than the Mets. Oh, the shame!

Interesting that the Nats are on the list. There has not been any local talk, at least not on the Nats show, about the Nats even being interested in Machado. Nats don't have anywhere to put him. Nats are set at 3B and SS. Rendon at 3B is every bit the fielder that Machado is and Turner at SS is a better fielding SS than Machado has proved to be. Machado might have the edge offensively but not so that ownership would be willing to change personal, especially with the money that Machado will demand. Rendon and Turner are much the better bargain, money wise, and every bit the fielding equal of Machado (and I won't even mention the personality aspect:rolleyes2:). -- Al

I just saw that the Yankees have cooled on him after seeing his WS antics.

It's a fact that there has been some discussion over Machado's hustle as an Oriole, but it was overlooked and didn't draw much attention as long as things were going well. Manny always seemed to come through and was certainly a rock at 3B. The move to SS seemed to have brought his faults more into focus and his move to LA certainly has put the spotlight on him more than it ever could have in Baltimore. Machado just didn't show well under the glare of the playoffs and his mouth and actions have only made the problems more obvious to suitors. Curious behavior for someone in his walk year, looking for the huge payoff. -- Al

At the end of the day, he will still get a big contract but his tripping of the Brewer first baseman and failure to run out plays or run hard has to give you pause.

He also spiked Pearce the other night at first base.

Plus he grabbed the player to try to interfere with his throw to complete the double play on two of his slides in the Brewer series.

He is clueless on how to play the game the right way.

Million dollar talent, .05 cent head.

Al:

I am not sure how it is for the Nats but Brian Sabean (executive vice president of baseball operations for the Giants) always says that the Giants are interested in signing big name free agents. At the end of the regular season he mentioned that they are going to try and sign Harper and then during the World Series he mentioned that they were going to see what happened with Machado (carefully worded to avoid a bad look). I have no doubt he will mention Kershaw once he opts out of his contract.

It seems that he does this so he can tell the fans that they tried to sign a big name. The fans have no way of knowing if it is true, so they generally buy it and move on.

Reading an estimate that he will get over $325 million. That's unreal. With no fans attending games and the TV ratings dropping, how can any team pay one player in excess of $300 million? I had never even heard of him before he joined the Dodgers. He didn't impress me much and now teams are fighting to pay him hundreds of millions. What a world.

I take it you don't watch AL baseball. Machado is a 4x All-Star and has been one of, if not the best, 3rd baseman in the AL for half-a-dozen years until his move to SS this past season. Agree about the money though, $325 million is insane. -- Al

Manny’s agent is Scott Boras. Color me unsurprised. It would also not surprise me if Manny is not signed until spring training start; that is Boras’ m.o.

$325 million is a lot but before commenting on whether it’s a ridiculous amount, I’d have to know how much is his bonus, his yearly salary, his incentives and the portion of which is deferred, if any.

Al, Brad, George, Sammy etc.,

We baseball junkies have to stick together. As always, the season was a blast (in the best and worst ways) and we now get to see what transpires during the off-season that will make our teams WS contenders.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

Due to the Red Sox winning the World Series, I now look forward to the Yankees overpaying for Machado in a panic move, or some other such boneheaded decision.

Bring on the hot stove season...……………….

This could be an even more interesting off-season since the Sox win usually means the Yankees will open the checkbook in an attempt to keep up.

I have learned the last couple of years that it isn't how much you spend but how you spend it. While the Red Sox had the highest payroll this year, the Giants had the second highest. One team won the World Series and the other almost finished in last place in their division.

As I mentioned to Brad earlier today, 30 million dollars of the 2018 RS payroll went to two players who are no longer on the team, Sandoval and Ramirez, thanks to the boneheaded guaranteed salaries MLB players get.

The Red Sox won the WS with 7 of their 9 players in the line up coming up through their farm system, only JDM and Moreland were free agent signings. They traded for Pearce, Leon, Kinsler and Nunez, Swiehart cam up through the farm system as well.

They got Porcello, Sale, Eovaldi and Rodriguez via trades, only Price is a free agent signing, Kelly, Pomeranz and Kimbrel were traded for, Brazier, Barnes and Hembree came up through the farm system.

So on a 25 man roster, a whopping three players are free agent signings, the rest they got via trades and through their farm system.
