2018 Baseball season (1 Viewer)

Word out of DC, and 'confirmed' by Chris Russo is that the Nats made Harper an offer during the season to head off his going FA. The offer was 10 years for $300 million and Harper turned...it...down. I'm sorry, but that is insane. All I can say is AMF. I like Harper but to turn down that kind of offer is just stupid. Now everyone has a real good idea of what it will take to sign him. Philly and SF are the real favorites at this point. Russo doesn't believe the NYY's have any real interest. I wish Harper well but I don't think he will be in a Nats uniform next season. The Nats made him a fantastic offer and it wasn't good enough. Nats should just say 'adios' and move on, using all that saved money to lock up Rendon, Turner, and sign some A+ SP's. Geez, $300 mil and 10 years not good enough...:rolleyes2: -- Al

Al:

For what it is worth Bay Area sports talk is saying that the Giants will not pay him the $400 million over 10 years that he wants.

I'd hate for the Phillies to sign him. They don't need him, and they certainly don't need to spend the money he (and his agent) demand.

Sports talk radio in Philly also has a woody for Machado, and for Trout, when the time comes. But I don't think they need any more free agents. They have plenty of talent at the major league level and in the farm system. They don't need to spend anything on high-priced free agents.

What the Phillies could use is for their young GM and manager to figure out that analytics don't tell you everything, and it's very easy to fall into paralysis by analysis. I think Kapler learned something at the beginning of the season, when he pulled Nola from his first appearance, because the numbers told him to, but a smart manager would have kept him in, because he was cruising. He didn't repeat that blatant a mistake, but he's got a long way to go.

Prost!

Obviously, Boras thinks he can do better and who can argue with him? If that is, in fact, the case, I really can’t blame Harper and Boras. It would probably be negligent if Boras didn’t advise Harper that he could do better.

The Angels want to sign Trout to a long term contract but if they can’t finalize one, I can definitely see him becoming a Phillie. I can’t imagine he’d be interested in any other team.

Sherman Klump is back with the Yankees 1 year/8 million, the company that does the clubhouse post game catering must be thrilled.

Rumors are swirling they are all in on every high profile free agent and every top end talent that is on the trading block across the league, the Mariners and Indians are looking to blow things up and who can blame them, with the RS, Astros and Yankees all in the AL, no one else will have shot for years to come...……………..

They’re probably just rumors. If they’re reportedly interested in looking at every free agent, why sign CC or Gardner. The two concepts don’t go together. The Yankees are not the budget busters of old; they try to stick to the budget. They were around 7th or 8th in payroll this year. Prior to the trading deadline their payroll was approximately $170 MM, not shabby, but a far cry from Boston’s $240 MM.

Right, 30 million of that is tied up in Sandoval and Ramirez, neither of whom are still on the team, and 14 million to Castillo, who's on the AAA Red Sox in Pawtucket, so their actual payroll is 196MM.

That said, I don't see anyway they can keep Eovaldi and he's a strong candidate to end up on the Yankees, so that would be a double hit, hurt the RS and help the Yankees in one shot.

Kimbrel is a goner too, maybe Kelly as well. they have X, Sale, JBJ, Betts and Ben10D still to sign and JDM can opt out after next year, so there are a lot of moving parts.

But hey, I'll take a WS title and worry about these things when the time comes.

Given the choice between Harper, Machado or Trout, I would take Trout.

I would, too; apart from his talent, he's a nice guy and would be a good influence in the clubhouse. Though, I still don't want to see the Phillies spend any money on free agents that way. I'd rather see then trade from the surplus talent they have. I'd also like to see them stop turning first basemen into outfielders, and declare a definite closer, instead of closer-by-committee.

Prost!

Harper may be going to Philly. According to Bob Nightingale of USA Today

The free agent outfielder, touted to be more popular than the Liberty Bell, looks to be headed to Philadelphia, the city of Brotherly Love.

It appeared all along that Harper would remain in Washington, where he has spent his entire career. But that was before word leaked Tuesday that he flatly rejected a 10-year, $300 million contract in September.

You can eliminate the rest of the suitors, too.

The Chicago Cubs don’t want to spend the money unless someone takes Jason Heyward or Yu Darvish off their hands.

The Los Angeles Dodgers don’t have interest.

The St. Louis Cardinals don’t have bright lights.

The San Francisco Giants are changing course.

It leaves one team for Harper, which won’t mind giving him at least $400 million.

The Phillies are the most desperate team to land a star, and with Machado wanting to go to the New York Yankees, and the Yankees having the greatest need for him, Philadelphia is the logical destination for Harper.

I believe Harper is gone from DC, but I would really rather not see him stay in the NL East. If he goes to SF or NY or St. Loo, I could still wish him a good career. If he leaves DC and stays in the NL East, I will be forced to boo him and root against him on a daily basis. I'd rather not have to do that. -- Al

I root for the team and not the player. When Strawberry left and went to LA, he became the enemy.

ESPN Hot Stove just had a St. Louis sportswriter on and he said that the Cards are VERY interested in Harper and they apparently have the money for him. -- Al

As much as I would like to see Harper in a Giants uniform I also know that they need pitching and at least 2 pure power hitters. They finished 29th out of 30 teams in home runs.

Nat's have signed C Kurt Suzuki to a 2-year $10 mil contract. That addresses one major concern and means the Nats are out of the Realmuto sweepstakes, unless something changes. Suzuki and Kieboom give the Nats good options at Catcher and it isn't beyond the realm of possibility that Wieters could be back. -- Al

Suzuki is a solid pick-up and a great deal at that price.

Nats got All-Star catcher Yan Gomes from Cleveland for 2 minor league players and the proverbial 'player to be named later'. Good deal for the Nats but it means adios to Wieters. Wieters was excellent at defense and handling the pitchers but was a disappointment with the bat his 2 years with the Nats, batting only .230 in his 199 games with only 18 Hr's and 82 RBI's. Hope he catches on somewhere as he is a class act. -- Al

Mets make a huge splash with Cano and Diaz plus $20 mil coming to NY for Jay Bruce and 4 other players. Mets are now back in the mix and in decent shape if they will just hold on to Syndergaard. Makes no sense to go all in with this trade and move Thor. -- Al

I hate the deal. They gave up two prospects and Bruce — not that I was in love with him — for a soon to be over the hill steroids user and a closer with umpteen amount of saves who will probably be crap next year. Cano might be good for one or two years and then they’re stuck. Great.
