2019-2020 Hot Stove League (2 Viewers)

The Giants got "lucky" during their WS run a few years ago. At the time of the first championship in 2010 most of the big name players were under contract for at least 4 more years. Luckily they got 2 more after. Then the team pretty much fell apart, lost big names and succumbed to age.

Reports are that the Nats have signed Strasburg to a 7-year deal worth $245 million. -- Al

That’s probably going to make Cole even more expensive as he’s younger with no history of arm problems.

That's exactly what the Hot Stove hosts said. They said that Strasburg's record deal would be the record for about 6 minutes. -- Al

So does that mean that the Nats are officially out of the running for Rendon?
Jason, it does if you take what Lerner (Nats owner) said at face value, ie., that the Nats couldn't afford to keep both of them. I'd be surprised if the Nats don't stay in the running and give it their best shot, even if it's not enough at this point. -- Al

Now you understand when I say that Klentak has to go.

Prost!
Brad

I don’t think he could have done that without ownership agreeing. Obviously, Middleton has a lot of disposable money.

According to Jon Heyman on Twitter: “Cole is expected to be a “huge” number now. Forget the new 245M pitching record. The better markers: 300M, 326M (double 1st CC deal, 330M free agent player record (Harper), 350M.”

Whatever else you may think about the Lerner's as the Nats owners, being cheap ain't one of them. Between Scherzer, Corbin, and Strasburg, the Nats have $595 mil committed (Scherzer @ 7 years, $210 mil; Corbin @ 6 years, $140 mil; Stras @ 7 years, $245 mil). LOTS of money for 3 pitchers. Remains to be seen if it pays off in the future as it did in 2019, but at least the pieces are back in place with the SP. I don't see how they can possibly afford Rendon but who knows what lurks in the pocket book of the Lerner's? Rendon just might like the odds in coming back to DC and taking a shot at another title with basically the same team, at least that's what I'm hoping.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

Best line I have heard about the Strasburg signing:

"If your owner has a net worth of $5 billion, it's a lot harder to find a pitcher like Stephen Strasburg than it is to find a big pile of money."

MLB Network is reporting that once Cole signs the next Domino to fall will be Bumgarner.

He is apparently looking for a 4-5 year contract in the $100 mil range. He has also said through his agent that he would like to stay with the Giants. As much as I'd like that I simply don't see it happening.

Guess I was wrong about Cole going to the West Coast. Wasn’t the first and most certainly not the last time. Bummer for the Angels. They really could have used him.

Lots of money. The pundits were right about Strasburg's record deal not lasting long, but I guess we all knew that. Now, where is Bums going to go? -- Al

From what I have read, the Twins really want him. He’d like to go to Atlanta because of the proximity to his home but I don’t know if their interest is as strong as the Twins’.

I'm sure Minnesota would be perfect for him. Atlanta is too hot in the summer.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

The Dodgers are now said to have a lot in interest in Bumgarner.

They'll throw big money at him. Almost have to have him after missing on Cole and Strasburg, but it would be against nature for Bums to go to LA, just as shocking as when SF hero Marichal signed with LA way back when. -- Al

So the Yankees signed Cole to a 9 year 325 million dollar deal...………..gee, never saw that one coming, just like the US intelligence never saw the attack on Pearl Harbor coming...…….:rolleyes2:

If the Yankees don't win two or three WS titles in that window, this contract is going to be a disaster.

With the window all but closed on the Red Sox and the Astros now, and the NL being a tire fire, I'd say the odds of that not happening are 325 million to one.

So much for Hal and his plan of building from within and being patient and not spending like his father did.

Not winning a WS in over 10 years will do that to you.

The gashouse gorillas gonna gashouse gorilla I guess...……….

This from a Yankees fan on another message board I belong to. They haven't even won one yet and he's already penciling them in for four..........and you people wonder why I hate the Yankees so much;

This century’s World Series winners through the first 20 seasons looks a lot like the last one. Boston had five titles thru 1919. Yanks had zero. Maybe NY is gearing up for a dynastic run. This team has won 203 games over the past two seasons, without an ace. If Cole can sustain his excellence through age 32, the Yanks might get on a roll. Nobody has repeated since 1999-2000. That’s the organizational goal. Win one, and don’t stop. Try to win three or four.
