I think Castro is probably a good addition but I wouldn’t have brought Cabrera back. Notwithstanding the second half of last season, which energized him, he’s on the decline. You saw the best of him. Same with Howie Kendrick. Sometimes it’s best to let them go a year too soon than a year too late.

I understand that, and from a purely business POV, it is probably correct, but both Kendrick and Cabrera were instrumental in the Nats run to and winning the WS. It would be a tough call to let them both go, especially as regards the fans POV. May be the wrong move from the heads POV, but the right call from the heart's POV. Anyway, if it doesn't work out, Rizzo will recognize it and correct as necessary. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.:wink2: -- Al

It’s a tough decision to be sure; the fans would be unhappy.

Nats continue to sign players, bringing back bullpen pitcher Daniel Hudson and signing Eric Thames at 1B. Still need to address 3B unless they intend to wing it by using a parade of fill-ins. They have the versatility in the infield to do this, but it is hardly ideal. I guess the Nats are really waiting to see which way Josh Donaldson will jump. -- Al

Have they moved on from Zimmerman?
Brad, speculation is that Zimm will be resigned (1 year deal). He only wants to play for the Nats. If he doesn't get an offer, he will retire. At any rate, Zimm would be a part-time solution at 1B, trading time with Thames and Kendrick, much as he did last year with Adams and Kendrick. -- Al

All I know is that Thames hit a home run against the Giants last year and the ball still hasn't landed.

Beginning to look like Alex Cora is in for a rough ride. Coincidence? We'll see what the investigations reveal. -- Al

If the investigation bears out the allegations, looks three managers will be on vacation for awhile.

Nats have signed OF Michael Taylor, avoiding arbitration, thus cementing the outfield. Nats really only need to deal with the 3B issue and resign 1B Zimmerman at this point. Another bullpen arm wouldn't surprise me but they could be finished there, as well. Nats have been very busy but that 3B issue still looms... -- Al

MLB Network has been reporting that the Nats are one of 3 teams in the running for Josh Donaldson.

Is that just a rumor or is it a legitimate possibility?

Nats have been in on him for a while. He has always been Plan B since the possibility of losing Rendon became real. Don't know what Plan C would be except maybe a rotation of various infielders that the Nats already have. Rizzo is nothing if not creative, so we'll see what happens if the Nats lose out on Donaldson. -- Al

MLB channel reporting that the penalties for the Astros sign-stealing scandal have been decided on: 1 year suspensions for the GM and manager, loss of #1 and #2 draft picks in both 2020 and 2021, and a $5 million fine. Ouch! -- Al

The owner just fired the GM and the manager. Holy you know what!

Al...

I don't think it's excessive...
the message does need to be sent...

if you're gonna cheat and we catch you...
we're gonna hurt you...

I expected Hinch to get suspended for a year...
also fair to me that the GM got pinched too...
so that doesn't shock me...

the fine of 5 million is not a big deal to these owners...

the top 2 picks for 2020 and 2021 is a stunning amount of hurt...
more than I expected...
but...
if you're gonna cheat...
I have little sympathy for you when you're caught..

don't like cheaters or organizations/players that abuse the system and rules...

still nothing the league does...
diminishes the disappointment/embarrassment of the fans and the integrity of the team...
sad day for Astro's fans...

Hammer time! Good for MLB. There should be a no tolerance policy on systematic cheating. If only the NFL had the guts to do this.
