2020-2021 Hot Stove League (1 Viewer)

Baseball sure has an odd sense of humor. Adon, in his major league debut (and only his 5th start above A level baseball) held the Sox to 2 runs while fanning 9 over 5.1 innings. Nats lead 5-2 after 6 but all is not lost for Boston as long as the Nats bullpen is involved. -- Al
As I said, the Nats pen promptly gave up the lead in the next inning. Lord, the Nats bullpen is a crime against baseball. -- Al

All is as it should be. Boston did what it had to and so did NYY, although they did leave it to the last moment. Now, on to the playoffs. -- Al

Me before the Giants clinched the NL West on Sunday:

MLB has a terrible playoff seeding system. The Giants can win 106 games only to be eliminated in one playoff game via a Wild Card loss.

Me after the Giants won the NL West:

MLB has a great playoff seeding system. The Dodgers can win 106 games only to be eliminated in one playoff game via a Wild Card loss.

LOL. So true. Gotta love baseball. -- Al

Here's a shocker...Despite the efforts and rules to improve the pace of the games, MLB announced today that the average length of a game in 2021 was 3 hours, 10 minutes, and 7 seconds (3.10.07), a new record. Up almost 3 1/2 minutes over 2020 and 4 1/2 minutes over 2019. Great job, guys. -- Al

That is brutal. Particularly when you consider that unlike other sports there is no break. And the playoffs are even worse with the endless pitching changes. A west coast playoff game can end on the east coast well after 1AM. They need a major change. The seven inning game would be a great start.

I believe 7 inning games as a regular feature is a non-starter. Pace is the key and a pitch clock would be needed along with keeping the batter in the box between pitches. A nine inning game in 2 1/2 hours was pretty normal in the 60's and 70's and should be achievable again. -- Al

If you mean 7 innings for every game, that would never fly. Fans would be opposed (including me and Al, I’m sure) plus the Union would never agree as it would cost jobs. However, as currently used I like it although obviously it made no difference.

I would think the owners would want longer games...
a hungry captive audience is a money machine...

All the games start the same time today, 305 EST. It may be the last regular season games we may see for awhile as there may be a work stoppage next year.

Tomorrow = Manager firing day.
Hit that one on the nose, Brad. Correct team and manager. Buy a Lotto ticket. -- Al

For me, ANY games beyond 162 after that tire fire of a Red Sox season last year is a gift.

Growing up as a Red Sox fan and dealing with one nut punch playoff/WS loss after another, all I hoped for was ONE WS title.

So far, this team/organization has given me four, it's surreal and incredible for me to be honest.

I'm looking forward to the game tomorrow with the gashouse gorillas, going into it with zero expectations, whatever happens, let the chips fall where they may.

Someone compared it to the 1978 playoff game; nope, not even close, that was a battle between two heavyweights who won 99 games each that year, they were the two best teams in baseball meeting for the right to demolish the hapless Royals (they won the West numerous times only to get rolled by the winner from the East, sort of like back in the late 1960's when hockey expanded they came up with the moronic idea to put all 6 expansion teams into the Western division, which the Blues won several years in a row only to get demolished in the finals, they changed that in 1971) and they go on to roll the NL winner, who happened to be the Dodgers.

Quite a few pundits say the Rays are a lead pipe lock to get to the World Series and the winner of this game is going to get steamrolled.

Survive tomorrow and advance and we'll just see what happens.

No dog in this fight between the Yanks-Sox, but as in football anyone but the Steelers, it's anyone but the evil Yankees in baseball....Go Sox!

Sammy...
the Yankees are a slight favorite in Las Vegas...
-125 to +115...

with no favorite or dog...
even money on a matchup is 90 cents on the dollar...
bet $100 win $90...the 10% is the vig...

on tonight's game...
NYY -125 to BRS +115...
meaning if you want to win $100 on the Yankees...
you need to bet $125...

meaning if you want to bet $100 on the Red Sox...
you will get paid $115...

injuries influence the line...
Martinez being scratched for the Red Sox might make a slight difference...
but the odds are mostly calculated on home field as an advantage...
and starting pitchers records...
should be a good watch...
I'm rooting for George...

Looks like my Tucson guy is killing it tonight for the Red Sox, Alex Verdugo went to Sahuaro High School, matter of fact my Butcher block guy and Alex are good friends.

Pretty **** close!! Why in the Hell were they waving him in with a ball off the Wall???...especially 1 out??🤣

1978 is officially dead and buried for this lifelong Red Sox fan.

Cole lasted two innings; 36 million a year doesn't buy what it used to.

9-1 the last 10 games in the playoffs vs the Yankees, beat them in 2004....WS title..........2018.....WS title............2021........??

Adios Bucky @#$%ing Dent.

Leave it to ESPN to give that no talent bum air time tonight.

Don't ever change ESPN.
