2020 NHL Season and Playoffs (1 Viewer)

Al-

I can honestly say that I don’t like him because of the rivalry between Washington and Pittsburgh.

On the other hand he is good for the sport. His pursuit of The Great One’s goal record draws in many non-hockey fans.

Best,
Jason
Jason, as Ovi is currently 35, I don't see how he ever gets near Gretzky's goal record. Ovi will have to play another 4 or 5 years just to have a realistic shot at 800 goals, still far short of Gretzky, but possible for second place all-time if he can play that long. I don't see it, but who knows? I just see third place as a much more realistic spot at this point in his career as 800 goals is a long way off. -- Al

Al:

Great post.

The numbers and time are working against Ovi.

Beyond that, even if you took away his goals, Gretzky would still lead the NHL in career points.

That would be the equivalent of taking away a MLB players’ home runs and having him still lead the league in RBIs.

Jason, that's a great comparison. Some athletes just transcend their sports, like Gretzky or Aaron. As you just said, if you subtracted Aaron's 755 career Hr's, the man would still be worthy of the HoF because he would still have over 3000 career hits. Another incredible stat I have always been awed by are the career numbers put up by Wilt Chamberlain, who averaged 30 points and 23 rebounds PER GAME for his whole career of 1045 games. I can only be glad that I got to see these incredible men play in my lifetime. So, hockey fan or not, I keep an eye on Ovi and his climb up the goal ladder. -- Al

Got curious and checked Gretzky's stats. If you subtracted his 894 career goals, he still leads the NHL in all-time points with 1963, 42 ahead of Jagr's runner-up 1921 total points. Gretzky is 936 points ahead of 2nd place. Now THAT is impressive. -- Al

His numbers are ridiculous. The same goes for his highlight reel.

I can’t help but laugh when he isn’t mentioned among the all time greatest in any sport.

After being vaccinated, I ventured out to an AHL hockey game this weekend. A lot of fun. They only allowed about 1K fans in an arena that holds 10K. Parked up front, no lines at the bathrooms, no idiots spilling a beer or talking through the entire game, and able to get out of the parking lot in about ten seconds instead of sitting in a traffic jam for 30 minutes. So some good things about the situation.

I watched an AHL game on the local TV today. The time keeper was hit in the head with a puck and when the game was 1-0 in the 3rd period the visiting team scored a goal that quickly bounced out of the net. The refs didn't see it though and they don't have replay this year. So no goal even though it clearly went in. That is old school hockey. If only the commentator had been drunk and fallen out of the sky box it would have been perfect.

Don't like to bore people with game results but last nights Blues - Wild was one for the ages. Blues tie game with 48 seconds left, go to OT win in OT with 2 seconds left! Ryan O"Reilly got the winner. He is a NHL super star.

Great post.

I went and looked up the highlights online and it made me wish that I saw the whole game!

Can't believe the woke outcry about Tom Wilson for his "horrific act of violence." I watched the video a couple times to see what all hue and cry was about and it looked like an old fashioned hockey fight in which Wilson kicked some butt. The Rangers need to man up and stop crying.

Not the first time at the dance . Just ask ZAR at the Pens . 5 suspensions for 30 games total so far . And also he committed two major acts in the same game on the 3rd .

The NHL has to eat a massive order of hypocrisy on the Wilson incident.

They run around calling for increased player safety while they let some glorified goon get away with running around essentially assaulting people on TV.

The NHL is the last refuge from the woke cancel culture in sports. It is a physical game and Wilson is an old school enforcer. All the whining and crying by the teams that he destroys is humorous. The NHL actually fined the NY Rangers for that ridiculous statement they issued. In the old days, if a team didn't like the way some guy played, the players took care of it. They didn't issue press releases or ask that players be fired or fined. They played the sport like men instead of aggrieved victims of society. I'm sure those days are coming to an end though. They will be kneeling and groveling soon enough. Enjoy the game while you can.

What it leads to was evident in the second game - 6 fights in the first 5 minutes , 140+ Penalty minutes , a team not playing for a period . I know which i would prefer to watch . If the guy did the things he does off the ice they would have had thrown the cell key away by now so why/how does he get away with intentionally maiming people in the name of sport .

I have been watching the NHL for over 50 years and read what a terrible thing happened to the Rangers via Wilson. I found the video and watched it 3 times and kept thinking I don't see anything out of the ordinary to cause this uproar. Even thought I may be watching the wrong video. There is not a team in the league that would not have Wilson on their team.
This is nothing compared to the early years of me watching hockey. How about the Wayne Maki - Ted Green stick swinging, or should I say Maki stick swinging. Look that up if you think this was bad.

That was my reaction as well. A sign of the times that the Rangers issued a press release. What an embarrassment to that organization. We live in a culture of the aggrieved.

I don't agree with the press release, thought that crossed a line. Though, IMO, Wilson is not good for the sport. He has crossed the line so many times without paying a penalty. Hard play is one thing, dirty play is another and he has proven time and time again with his actions that have caused injuries that would NOT normally happen during hard play. He is targeting specifically and that has zero place in a game. Can you honestly say he has nothing buy "play hard" intentions? No , you cannot, once maybe, twice coincidental, the 50th time........................NO.

I don't believe in whiners, but I do believe in playing the hardest you can within the rules. By doing something intentionally and knowingly against the rules repeatedly would seemingly define "cheating".

I don't know about any team, guy has repeatedly been decried over the years. I think the Pens have no respect for him after the crap he pulled repeatedly in the playoffs. Personally, I love hard play Stanley Cup hockey, but I could do without this guy.

I could care less one way or another about Wilson.

I simply can't stand hypocrisy. The NHL decided to advertise itself as a league that wanted to get away from "old time" goon hockey. Then when they had the chance to call out that style of play they didn't.

Bruins lost to the Capitals last night 3-2 after the Capitals starting goalie got hurt (so Smoltzy is not there anymore to torture the Bruins?) and 215 year old Anderson stepped in.

The Capitals were flying all over the ice trying to kill various members of the Bruins, namely Ovechkin, Wilson didn't try to kill anyone; yet.

They are stealing the goon tactics from the Blues to beat the Bruins.

And their defensemen do what the Blues defensemen did; just stand in front of the net blocking shots/deflecting passes.

This series will be a short one, Capitals in 5 I'd say.................
