Yesterday I watched in horror and disgust at what in my seven decades as an American Citizen I never could have imagined!
A MOB of thugs, malcontents, racists and conspiracy theory mongers attempted a COUP of our Government .
They violently stormed our Capital, threatened our elected legislators and committed vandalism in our hallowed halls of government.

To our International forum members I would like to say that this mob attack was not representative of the majority of Americans.
We believe in peaceful protests, we believe in debate and we believe in Democratically run elections.
We condemn violence from either side of the political spectrum!

These attacks were instigated, encouraged and enabled by lies and conspiracy theories.
Fortunately both of our two major political parties have unequivocally condemned this violence and unAmerican behavior.
The majority have accepted our elections and like it or not have committed to a peaceful transition which is our heritage.
Our legislators were not deterred from coming back and getting their jobs done. We will not let these thugs usurp our Democracy.
Unfortunately this horrendous event plays. into the hands of our adversaries. Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and other dictatorships
are chuckling with delight!

I agree with the above. Aside from the loss of my parents, one of the saddest days in my life.

I heard many say “this is not who we are.” Wrong, this is what exactly what we are so I disagree with Rich.

Unfortunately this is what a substantial portion of our population exhibit but I still think the majority of Americans repudiate
this behavior.

I thought we stayed away from politics on this board?

I am hopeful that this is one thing all sides can agree on - Yesterday was the culmination of a lot of idiocy that has occurred for arguably greater than a decade in America (lot longer than that, but openly and fiercely the last decade or so). It was and is a sad day and I was and still am thoroughly disgusted. Literally sad on one hand and hopping mad on the other because I feel the actions were a stain on all of America.

What I do hope is that it becomes a future building block of universal leadership on all sides, in that it is a reminder and the tipping point or low point of what continuous rhetoric, fighting, you fill in the words there are many will get you. Strong leadership that communicates and works together is not only preferred but it is required. One way or no way has got to go.

I am going to take a positive approach and say that better days are ahead because of lessons that will be learned that started with yesterday's debacle.

Sincerely
TD

I don't mind getting deleted but everybody should be deleted.

The thread should probably be closed. We all have different perspectives on a variety of issues but we come here because of our common interests and we should probably limit discussions to those interests.

I think we can all agree that sacking one of our sacred institutions is not something we wanted to see.

Tom,
I wholeheartedly agree and I did not want to start a political debate. I just thought it is history in the making albeit not what we want to see happen in this country.
I criticize all violence from wherever it comes but some people want to bring up their own gripes and prejudices no matter what we post.

I think our common interests in a hobby that is based on depicting history should allow some civil discussion of major historical events.
Almost everything these days is turned into political debate.
I gave my view on a critical event in American history that has never happened before (except for the British burning of DC in the War of 1812).
I did not think there would be a debate on this but some people just interpret any view as an affront to their political beliefs or prejudices.
Learned my lesson!

All I would add to the excellent posts by Rich, Brad and Tom, is that as a father, explaining yesterday's horrifying events to my children, who were sitting with my wife and I watching the ceremony as a lesson in civics, was one of the most difficult and saddest things I ever had to do.

Rich,
I am glad you brought it up and I think this is very civil because IMO and I hope a shared one, we are all in agreement on this mess! Disgust, horror and the commitment to hold all of our leaders to a higher standard. I am just pissed.

Tom

It's shameful how the media plays a part in fire-stoking as the ratings chase dictates.

It reminds of a song from Jane's Addiction classic Nothing's Shocking album from 1988 that said:
"It's just like the show before
The news is
Just another show
With sex and violence"

Heck, I agreed with your original statement and yes, it was a sad day. Perhaps, we should also delete all threads on this Forum about COVID, BLM, Antifa, Lockdowns/ Masks, etc. There was plenty there I found offensive and especially political.

Last night I had to tell my daughters that we can’t leave our yard because of the curfew. My five year old asked me why, and I answered, “There are bad guys downtown and nearby doing bad things. The police need us to stay inside.”

She looked at me wide-eyed, “I thought bad guys weren’t real... are heroes coming to fight them?”

I hope so.

I love the innocence of that statement. Its movie worthy.

I do agree it was a sad day in not just USA but world history.

However if that was an attempted coup it would classify as the most poorly planned and inept coup in the attempted coups and coups in recent years. When I think of coups I think of
1981 Spain when a Lt Col led 200 National Guard into Parliament
1986 Phillipines when the military deserted Marcos and supported the people ( a justified coup if ever there was one)
2006 Fiji (who have had frequent coups)
Also Thailand a few times plus plenty of African countries.

Some nut job wearing Indian headress sitting in the Senate for a few minutes and others wondering around without any obvious leader is not my idea of an attempted coup.

This attempt to overthrow a government was poorly done as well, history is full with them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Gideon_(2020)

but that does not mean we should take it lightly and minimize it.

A Capitol Hill policeman has now died of his wounds. All those who are arrested and those subsequently arrested, including the people who incited this mob, need to be arrested for playing a part in his death.
