Are there Alligators in Nam ? (1 Viewer)

Steve, did you use actual water? I also know that artists don’t give their secrets away :wink2:

Yes Brad, actual water for this photo shoot ! Just added a little green and brown mixed poster paint for colour, since they were only in the water a few mins paint was fine.

Unlike for the real troops like Denver, there wasn't a strength sapping Sun and humidity, no Leeches, Mosquitos, Centipedes,Snakes or Tigers, who'd be expected to wade through water contaminated with faeces, teeming with all sorts of parasites and having to fill their water canteens with it to quench their thirst with, while maybe seeing a few yards further upstream a dead water Buffalo or worse in the water, not to mention the chances of the water also containing Agent Orange !
Sterilising tablets and Kool Aid only went so far !

Got to and I do, take my hat off to those guys for serving in that Hell hole of a place and that's before you add in Booby traps and the reason they're there, VC / NVA !

Yes I would have hated to think these figures were cemented in and could not be used in other scenes. Maybe all your collection should get this treatment Steve, certainly would freshen them up, no need to dust.{sm4}, Robin.

From what I've read, Fire Ants seem to have been a bugger there too, the dangerous Fauna and Flora, then the strength and soul sapping weather, not to mention the heavy packs, must have felt like everything was against you guys out in the bush.

Thanks Duke ! :salute::

In truth, I can't afford to just have figures half submerged in resin and not be able to use them for something else !

Yeah man, watch a documentary about those rock apes.

Creepy!

Making a plan to visit the Song Dong Caves in the next year or two.

To answer the posts question, there aren't alligators, but there are crocodiles. Our Montagnard's used to "fish" with grenades on the river that flowed next to my Special forces camp in the central highlands. One day they came back with a 6' long croc that ended all thoughts of ever again swimming in that water. Up to that point, we had no idea. Unfortunalty, the pictures I took of that have been lost in the last 50 years, but very surreal. Our camp hunters also killed 3 tigers while I was there, one using just a cross bow. We also had 20 elephants, assorted monkeys and other critters that made life in that camp like being in a Walt Disney movie at times.....

Pat,

Great story! I spent some time with my hero MOH Roy Benavidez when I was in Japan and man he had some stories to tell. Another buddy of mine told me story about an encounter he had with a King Cobra while he was sitting on the out door commode in Thailand. He said his head and back was big as a human head and 23 feet long. One of the villagers killed it before it struck.

The only critters I had to deal with was rats in my foxhole in Korea and freaking scorpions and camel spiders in the desert. I am still paranoid of scorpions to this day because of them.

I love the dioramas, but when somebody says they was there, Big Respect.
That's why I'm looking forward to the Falklands, It's real to me.
I remember my Grandad talking about Burma, didn't say much but it was unreal to me. Like a film
I can just remember Vietnam on the news late 60's but still not real, bit like Lebanon in the 70's
Respect to the people involved. Interesting to know what they think of the figures

Steve,

Love your imagination, it makes it very real.....with real water. Of course.

Steve

Great looking scene Steve, really like the actual water use, maybe I should buy an aquarium. I actually live on a river, we're to far South for Crocodiles, except for the rare visitor which are soon moved on (hopefully). There are Bull Sharks in the river, people don't swim here much, but I've always felt safe on my Kayak, I haven't been attacked....so far anyway
