Ashes in Australia (1 Viewer)

I like to think I'm a bit hard to shock but Swann's retirement today absolutely did that!

I think it is a mistake. He should have soldiered on and then retired at the end of the series. If you make yourself available you must do so for the entire tour. He has been an impressive cricketer and something of a 'character' but if England were leading 3 - 0 he may well not have talked of making way for a younger player in such a generous manner. It sends a strong signal that the wheels are falling off the English campaign - one that is worse than actually being beaten on the field. Coming on the back of Trott's medical issues it looks a lot worse than it actually is. Then again, someone's retirement is another player's opportunity. I am worried, though, because when in doubt the English selectors tend to toe a conservative line. Remember when they brought Colin Crowdrey out in 74/75 to face Lillie and Thommo? That said, he did as well as anyone.

Will they blood a young player or does Panesar get an extended run despite not quite being up to the challenge in the past? The difference between being a winning and losing team is often just having two or three batsmen in form, a good wicket keeper and a really fast bowler backed up by a solid attack with some variety.

The thing that irks me is that due to a minor issue with clipping the stumps in delivery coaches have been trying to change Finn's bowling set up and appear to have turned our fastest and most hostile bowler into a less than accurate trundler.

When the going gets tough,never rated him as a bowler when it got to tough and to think they had the nerve to compare him to the great Sir Shane Warne......................^&grin

What a joke !!
I hope Monty say no thanks England im done to,he has more heart than Swann,Peterson and the rest of the top 6,WHAT A JOKE England cricket is now when we where down and out we never spat the dummy.

"we where down and out we never spat the dummy." The 'homework' business in India was not exactly evidence of keeping it together.

Yeah, I was surprised Swann pulled up his stumps and booked his ticket home. Unless he was tapped on the shoulder to retire early, I think his decision was poor and it doesn't do anything for team morale.

It's really hit the fan today. Some are indicating he jumped before he was pushed. He's talking about some teammates who have their heads in the clouds (he used a different term actually). Given the turmoil it's caused (on top of all the rest) it seems a very poorly timed decision.

Gooch 'rested' during the 1989 Ashes when Alderman was working him over and Martyn retired midway through in 2006. It is always looks bad regardless of how it is portrayed.

Well said mate.

Mr Swann is not going quietly either is he!{eek3} He has been a terrific bowler for England no doubt about. It was however a shame is last performance was underlined by that truly absurd comparison of losing the Ashes to being raped, sometimes sportsmen of all differing sports live in such a removed world that they sometimes say things that beggar belief. I'm sure thousands of women world wide sympathize with him and are now staunch G.Swann fans!!{eek3}

I've never really rated Panesar too highly as a bowler or a batsman but you cannot fault his courage.

Another good bowling performance from Australia. It will be interesting to see how we bat given that our top order has been quite ordinary at times. I see that the Australian top order has averaged 54 a wicket across the series while our tail has averaged 52. That is good news for our bowlers but also a wake up call for our top six.

My friend Jack always has a admirable, justified, balanced and fair point of view about the English cricket team, where I say bugger the poms! when they're down grinded them into the dirt, crush them, no mercy.....Come on Aussie.....^&grin
Wayne.

I understand what you are saying Wayne but have you noticed that few of our English friends join us here to talk cricket? We need to be a bit more welcoming.They are our cousins after all ... {sm4}

Being a diplomatic sort of bloke, I kinda agree with you Marty although the Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi takes over and I agree with Wayne and say, let's pummel the Poms into the MCG turf!!{sm4}

Always better to be humble - Australia struggling at 6/131!!

Well said mate. Cant stand it if a sport which by definition is s sport gets over nationalistic or worse , it alienates folk. I know this for a fact as fellow countrymen think there are darker overtones on this thread and even when we won last summer refused to take part. And before I get told it doesnt happen- join us in the pub for the feedback!!
