Baseball 2012 (1 Viewer)

MLB formally announced the addition of a second wold card team in each league and a one game playoff between the two wildcard teams in each league. Why don't they just eliminate the regular season and let every team make the playoffs . . . :rolleyes2:

So let me see if I've got this strait; you play 162 games to get to a one game playoff? And what happens if you had to use your best pitcher the second to last game of the season and your second best the last day of the season just to make the playoffs, you have to go with your third starter in a winner take all game?

This is why baseball is in trouble......

This weekend Ill have to catch up with this thread. In the mean time go TIGERS!!!! ^&grin

Now we are in March and the countdown to Opening Day continues...only a month left...

Well, you're cutting yourself out of watching the Rangers have a great season and something really special happening with the Knicks.

I was a Knicks season ticket holder for several years, until I got sick of the NBA changing the rules to permit big stars, particularly Michael Jordan, to dominate. I haven't watched a minute of NBA basketball since I gave up my season tickets in 2001.

I played Hockey as a kid, but I have never been able to get into watching it. My son is taking skating lessons and is getting ready to start playing hockey, so I am taking him to an Islanders-Bruins game this month, my first ever NHL game. He may get into watching the local teams, in which case I will take him to games so we can share the experience, but I really could care less about what is happening with the NHL.

Saw in the paper this AM that Jamie Moyer, who is 49, is in camp, trying to make the Rockies roster. Moyer is/was a good left-handed pitcher with 24 years in MLB. I guess that quarter-century mark must mean a lot to him as he is coming off Tommy John surgery which kept him out all last season. 49 and coming off surgery? Time to heed the red flag and say hi to the family on a permanent basis, I think. What the heck, he is left-handed.... -- Al

I see the Royals are having a rough spring, from the health standpoint. They have already lost their catcher, Perez, for up to 3 months and now comes word that their closer, Soria, has elbow damage and might need his second TJ surgery. Couple of holes that are hard to fill with less than 2 weeks till Opening Day. -- Al

Are you sure you're not talking about the Mets. They've had a checkered spring, what with Wright yet to play, Ike having Valley Fever (it's a real disease and can be quite debilitating) and some other pitcher or two going down. That's probably why they're 3-11, not to mention the bullpen seems awful. Rest assured that if Johan shows he's effective, he will be traded for prospects, Wright as well.

On top of that, I was hoping that the owners (Wilpon and Katz) would lose their Madoff case and be forced to sell the team. No such luck. They settled with the trustee and were able to repay their loans to MLB and B of A. Thank god for Knicks and Rangers and after that's over, when do the NFL camps open? ^&grin

It's a good time to be a Mets fan...NOT!!

See that Joba Chamberlain continues his bad luck. Recovering from TJ surgery, he has blown out his ankle in a gruesome manner, (at a kid's play area, while with his child), that sounds as if he will miss the whole season. -- Al

According to reports, because the bone broke through the skin, he almost bled to death. He won't be able to put weight on his ankle for three months. He's definitely gone for the year. The jury is still out about his ever resuming his career.

Moyer has made the Rockies as their #2 starter. At 49 and coming off TJ surgery, this is quite remarkable. When he gets his first victory, he will be the oldest player in MLB history to earn a win. Come on Jamie, we geezers are pulling for you. Love those junk-ball lefties. -- Al

Opening Day for the Nationals at Wrigley Field today, at 2:30. Strasburg is pitching and I can hardly wait another minute for 6 months of baseball to get going. That bridge between the Super Bowl and Opening Day is brutal. ^&grin -- Al

Won't hurt my feelings. Two of my favorite teams.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

Nationals have opted John Lannan to AAA. Lannan has asked to be traded, quite rightly, IMO. Lannan has been a reliable starter and their best starter for a couple of years now. He is not a #1 starter, but is a good, steady left-hander who should be able to help someone who needs a 3-4-5 starter. Nats are making an error sending him down as it never hurts to have a vet to anchor the staff. Lannan has a $5 million contract, and is, in fact, the highest paid player to be sent down to the minors in MLB history (non-rehab). Lannan lost out to the numbers game as the Nationals have an abundance of starting pitching (at the moment) and since Lannan isn't a Ryan type fast ball pitcher (think Jamie Moyer), he isn't on the Nats radar right now. Too bad, as he will be needed once the season starts and the inevitable pitching flops and injuries show up. -- Al

Did I see that the Orioles lost to a community college the other day??? Ouch!

Nats had a successful opening day, beating the Cubs 2-1, in a well pitched game. Nats trailed 1-0 after 7 but scored 1 run in the 8th and 1 run in the 9th to win it. The Cubs had the tying run thrown out at the plate for out #2 in the bottom of the 9th. The wind was brutal all game, blowing straight in. Cost the Nats 3 Hr's and the Cubs 2. The Nats ace closer, Storen, is on the DL, so the off season pick-up of Lidge ended up being genius as he closed the game. Strasburg did real well for the Nats, giving up 1 run in 7 innings, but got an ND. Well, only 90 or so more wins needed for theplayoffs.^&grin -- Al P.S.- I see where Halliday and Verlander have picked up where they left off last season. Neither allowed a run.

3 games in and the O's are playing like champions, but then again, they started last year 6-1.:rolleyes2: Ugly starts for the NYY's and the Red Sox. NYY got 1 good start out of 3 but went winless to Tampa. Sox were even worse. Got a good start in the opener but lost, and then gave up 23 runs in the next 2 games. Both teams now 0-3, 3 games back of the O's.{eek3}:wink2: I declare the season officially done. O's win! O's win! -- Al
