Baseball 2012 (2 Viewers)

That will buy him a lot of Twinkies.

What are the Tigers going to do in 2013 when Martinez comes back from knee surgery with three DH's?

What a boneheaded signing for a stupid amount of money, it really is insanity.

I agree. I know the Tigers were in panic mode when Martinez got hurt but there had to be another way. We have our 1st baseman in Cabrera now it looks like Fielder to 1st Cabrera to 3rd and Inge to outfield. I know we needed to pickup a bat somewhere but I was really hoping it would be someone else.

It used to be only Texas (A-Rod), the Yankees (A-Rod and Teixiera) and Red Sox (Gonzalez) who gave out crazy contracts like that for bats, apparently now the Angels and Detroit have joined the insanity. I think all of these teams are going to look pretty foolish at the tail ends of these 8-10 year contracts, when they are paying 25+ million dollars for a washed up 36-42 year old ex-superstar who by then will be an average player or worse.

The Nationals have snuck under the radar with the signing of Edwin Jackson to a 1 year, $10million contract. This gives the Nationals a VERY deep pool of pitchers to form a starting and long relief staff from. The Nats now have 8 proven starters under contract. The likely starters, at this moment, line up to be Gonzalez, Strasburg, Jackson, Zimmerman, and Lannan. They also have Detwiler, Gorzelany, and Wang in the mix for the rotation or long relief. Allowing for the usual injuries and off-year, this is still an impressive array of pitchers from which to form the starting staff. You can never have enough pitching, or so I've heard. Obviously, someone is going to be trade bait and the rumors are it will be Lannan. That is too bad because he has been a dependable pitcher for the Nats through some tough times. I would hate to see him go just as the Nats are ready to contend. -- Al

Well, the Orioles went and traded Jeremy Guthrie. Sent him to the Rockies for a relief and starting pitcher. Guthrie has long been the foundation of the Orioles staff, with a varied amount of success, but he went out there every 5th day and gave it his best with a rotten team. He was my favorite Oriole and I can only wish him success with the Rockies. He needed a fresh start, a new team/atmosphere. The Orioles have done him a big service while once again, shafting themselves. This deal will work out like all their others (bad) and I hope Guthrie becomes a consistent, big winner with the Rockies. The Orioles name has also been mentioned in connection with Manny Ramirez. That figures. On bad deal after another for years, what's another one gonna hurt? I'm real close to becoming an ex-Oriole fan after 45 years. It's not the losing, all teams go through that, it's the consistently bad decisions and meddling by ownership that have soured me. With the Nats in DC having built a team with patience and good decisions, I find myself about to transfer my full allegiance to a NL team for the first time since the 1960's Giants. Always been a NYY fan, a sort of problem when the Orioles were involved, but it has become less and less of a problem as the Anglos owned Orioles have become more and more an after thought. The trade of Guthrie just about severes my loyalty but I'll hang in for a little while to see if the O's show any kind of heart/improvement, but I ain't going to wait long. -- Al

Keeping it all in the (Boston) family?

Apparently Brady's sister is engaged to Kevin Youkilis. If true, let's hope his teammates don't mess up and she says that Kevin can't do it all and it would help if they could hit the ball once in awhile ^&grin

Yankees are in negotiation with the Pirates to trade A.J. Burnett. Sticking point seems to be the amount of salary Yankees will cover; they are currently offering only a third.

Dumping Burnett even with the eating of up to 25 mil is totally worth it. He needs to go. The Yankees have made some interesting invites to ST and I think there maybe a good replacement for Burnett in that group.

More proof, (as if it were needed), that MLB salaries are absurdly high. The Orioles have defeated Brad Bergesen, a pitcher, in salary arbitration. Bergesen was seeking 1.2 million dollars, a healthy raise over his 2011 salary of $434,000. The Orioles will pay him $800,000 instead. Still quite a good raise. The kicker here is that Bergesen's 2011 numbers were hardly worthy of keeping his job, much less getting a raise. He was 2-7 in 34 appearences, with an ERA of 5.70! How does this warrant a raise at all, much less almost doubling a salary? Bergesen must possess a real set to imagine that he was worthy of a raise of such proportions. I guess this is the way the MLB salary game is played. Pitch like crap and get your salary doubled. If I didn't love the purity of the basic game, and remember back to a time where baseball players were payed a much more realistic and blue collar type salary, I would be tempted to follow badminton. -- Al

Saw an article about 47 year old Jose Conseco playing for a team in the Mexican League this year. Been out of baseball for a while having last played for the White Sox in 2001. I guess dreams just die hard. -- Al

I see the Bosox have signed Ortiz to a 1 year contract at around $14.5 million. On the other hand, the Chisox haven't spent a single dime on free agents. -- Al

Just heard that Gary Carter lost his battle to cancer and has passed away. RIP Gary. Thanks for everything.

When you hear something like this, you become a little more mortal.

Wow...Ryan Braun's suspension just got overturned. Not many details yet...

According to ESPN's Karl Ravech, Ryan Braun won his 50-game PED suspension appeal on a revelation that a courier did not take his urine sample immediately to FedEx because he thought it was closed on Saturdays.
The sample sat in the courier's fridge for two days, violating the normal protocol for the handling of PED tests. It might sound like a ridiculous out for Braun, but it's an absolute must that the testing process is conducted according to the policies that have been agreed upon between the players' union and the commissioner's office. Braun will be in Brewers camp Friday.

It might sound like a ridiculous out for Braun................................

It is.

No more whining now from small market teams about how then never catch a break.

MLB probably figured that with Prince gone and Braun out for 50 games, the Brewers would be God awful, so they cut them a break.

Way to go Bud (didn't he used to own the Brewers by the way...........)......

What a load of B.S. You know what's an absolute must? Getting the players who use performance enhancing drugs out of baseball. Come on, the guy won the National League MVP while testing positive. Nothing has changed since the bad old days, when Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and Alex Rodriguez were getting away with it.

That is a pretty stupid reason to overturn the suspension. So by that logic, Braun is not guilty only because of a 3rd-party's screwup? Again, that is dumb rule to have. I mean, in my job, we sometimes have DUI or DUI-D urine kits sit in the evidence fridge over the weekend. As long as they are kept at the required temp, it doesn't affect the alcohol content. I have a hard time believing the chemical composition of whatever substance he was using would break down over one weekend while sitting in a fridge!

A cynical person might say that rule is a very conincidental and convienient element of the player/comissioner agreement which lessens the chance of guys getting caught for this kind of thing.....

I have been listening to local Chicago sports radio , i have also been hearing that Braun may have a medical condition such as herpes or shingles , in which a presribed medication for said condition may have resulted in a positve PED result...But as to not leak said condition...MLB may have had a more convenint out by just saying they screwed up the procedure , & letting it be ?
