There have been attempts to have Jackson restored. He was illiterate and taken advantage of by Comiskey (White Sox owner) and thus easy peduncle gamblers. Allegedly, he didn't know what he was getting involved with when the Series was thrown. There seem to be enough questions to warrant a second look but I think MLB has dragged its feet on the matter.
I imagine that Jackson could probably be cleared without too much fuss, but I don't see it happening because of the door it opens in relation to Rose and the potential problems presented by the HGH Gang. Selig certainly isn't going to do anything. -- Al

I read something the other day saying that Jackson's case wasn't clear cut, as to culpability. There were questions about his batting average during the series (low during the first part of the Series and higher when the Reds had things in hand) and his fielding. On the other hand, Buck Weaver (who would not be HOF material) was viewed as completely innocent.

If the steroid users had admitted they used them, then maybe they get in. My understanding is that it wasn't a violation of league rules at that time. But to lie about it is unforgivable. These guys have disgraced themselves and made a mockery of the game. I would wipe the books clean of their records. It was a disgrace that Bonds threw out the first pitch in SF for the World Series game. Anyone who watched baseball during the home run derby between Sosa and McG knew those guys were juiced. McG looked like Popeye and was hitting HRs like no one in history. It was a farce that hasn't been fully accounted for.

ESPN just announced the Yankees traded Jesus Montero to Seattle for Rookie All star starting pitcher Michael Pineda (10-11, 3.74, 1.10 WHIP), and that the Yankees signed Dodgers free agent starter Hideki Kuroda (13-16, 3.21, 1.21 WHIP) to a 1 year, 10 million dollar contract. This smells like a major upgrade of the Yankees rotation, which will now consist of C.C. Sabathia, Michael Pineda, Ivon Nova, Hideki Kuroda, and A.J. Burnett, with Phil Hughes presumably returning to the bullpen. Freddie Garcia is also still on the staff. The Yankees just put themselves in a much better position for 2012.

I saw this and was a little surprised that Seattle let Pineda go. Good for the NYY. Kuroda is a help, too. A couple of medium level deals and the rotation looks to be a lot better, with options if need be. I like the looks of it. -- Al

I'm surprised there has not been more buzz about these aquisitions as they threaten, if they work out, to give the NYY a huge boost. With these 2 pitchers, that gives the NYY's, as Louis says, a loaded starting staff with a potential 7 legitimate starting pitchers for 5 rotation spots. This allows a lot of flexibility for the rotation, long relief, and allows for injuries or ineffectivness. I can't think of another team that has such potential in a starting staff. We know Philly is in great shape and that their top starters are the games best, but even the Phillies aren't as deep as NYY, at this point. Lots of potential here. -- Al

Apparently Gary Carter has taken a turn for the worse, with more tumors being discovered. Very sorry to hear that.

I may be a Yankee fan, but I always respected Gary Carter and Keith Hernandez with the Mets back in the 80's. I am sorry to hear about Carter taking a turn for the worse.

All quiet on the Prince Fielder front. Teams scared to commit to him for a long term contract because of his size or the money it will take, or both? RedSox added bull-pen help with Andrew Bailey and Mark Melancon. The NYY's have signed ex-Red Sox Okajima to a minor league contract. -- Al
Fielder still unsigned. I'm a lot surprised by this. Big bat for someone and it's getting close to February. Something/someone has to break soon. Nationals still in the running but haven't pulled the trigger. A huge bat in the Nats line-up, to go with what should be a very good pitching staff, will make them a legitimate division challenger. -- Al

Fielder going to the Tigers for 9 years/214 million!

Whoa! That's a big one. Never figured anyone would go for that many years. I guess the money is about market (insane though it is) but I never thought Fielder would get more than 5/6 years. Well, it is an AL team so when his knees and whatever else goes bad, he can DH. Baseball has lost it's mind. :rolleyes2: -- Al

The amount paid for Fielder is absurd. The guy is fat and overweight, not a good health risk in my view. Apparently Valentine said something like we have a lot of money but not that much money.

Al, I would agree, but then, its the exact same argument that was made when Pujols got his new deal.

That's why u bring ur son to a baseball game
and it cost u $150
Bingo! The cost is exactly why it's been years since I attended a MLB game. AA ball is closer to me, MUCH cheaper and just as entertaining on it's own level. -- Al

True enough. It does fit both situations. And MLB HAS lost it's mind.:D -- Al

My name is Noah and I approve these posts.....^&grin

I have read recently that Albert's wife felt insulted by the offer the team presented, which was a few million a year less than the Angels. That is just crazy! As you say Al, MLB has lost it's mind when it comes to these salaries.

There had been a lot of speculation that the Nats had the inside track on Fielder, but seeing the deal Fielder got from Detroit, I feel safe in saying that the Nats had no shot with the numbers at that level. The Nats owners were never going to give Fielder a 9 year contract. The number kicked around in the paper here in DC was a max of 6 years, maybe 7, but no higher. After the money the Lerners put out to sign Werth and LaRoche last season, $200 million plus for Fielder was not going to happen either. The Lerners also have to sign Ryan Zimmerman, the cornerstone and face of their franchise, to a new contract, as well. I think all that stuff about the Nats being the Fielder frontrunners, was a bunch of misinformation, probably given life by Fielders agent, Scott Boras, just to amp up interest. The Nats still are going to be a factor this season, even without Fielder. If Werth and LaRoche can bounce back and put up anything close to career average numbers, the Nats will be right there in the race. -- Al

I wonder if the contract was by the pound? :) Amazing how they fritter away good money sometimes.

That will buy him a lot of Twinkies.

What are the Tigers going to do in 2013 when Martinez comes back from knee surgery with three DH's?

What a boneheaded signing for a stupid amount of money, it really is insanity.
