Got one of those hard-luck, victim of numbers stories that baseball is so well known for. The Nat's are sending Gio Gonzalez to the mound tonight. He was a 21 game winner last season, but this year has been quite different. Gio has started 15 games and has managed only a 3-3 record. He has been the main victim of the Nat's inability to score runs. In Gio's last 8 starts, he is 0-1, with 7 no decisions. This isn't because he is pitching badly or going deep into games. He has pitched well and with the number of innings to win. His ERA over those 8 starts is 2.18, almost impossible to top. Yet, the mighty Nat's offense has managed to sabotage everyone of those starts by averaging the same 2.18 runs scored per game for him. During this 8 game stretch, the Nat's have lost 3 of the games by a 2-1 score. Every team seems to have a hard-luck pitcher every season and this year it is Gio. Last year it was Jordan Zimmermann that the Nat's couldn't score for and it cost Jordan 5-6 wins. Gio has already lost that many wins with no end in sight. -- Al

Naturally, as soon as I wrote the above, the Nat's 'exploded' for 6 runs in support of Gio, who left the game in the 6th with a 6-1 lead. A sure thing with the Nat's bullpen, or should have been. Nat's won 7-5 after their 3 best relief pitchers all gave up runs, but what the heck, Gio finally got win #4. -- Al

He-wacka-do! Guess who's tied for 1st place in the NL Central. Pittsburgh! 18 games over .500 and tied with the Cards for the best record in MLB. Not bad for the ol' Pirates. ^&cool -- Al

A continuation of this hard-luck rant, with additions. After Gio won his 4th game the other night, it was the 12th time in 16 starts that he has allowed 2 or fewer earned runs in a start this season. With a minimal support of 3-4 runs a game, his record should show 10 wins, not the 4 he has. The Nat's terrible offense has proved hard to overcome.
As bad as Gio's luck has been, Stephen Strasburg's has been worse. Stras has pitched to a 4-6 record, with an ERA of 2.41. He has allowed 2 or fewer earned runs in 12 of his 15 starts. With a minimal run support of 3-4 runs per game, and subtracting 2 losses caused by faulty defense, his record could easily be 11-4. Strasburg's run support has been 2.7 runs per game, the lowest of any starter in baseball. Just unbelievable.
Only Jordan Zimmermann, with an 11-3 record, and a 2.28 ERA, has managed to overcome the problems and even he has been victimized on occasion by faulty defense and lack of runs. Having allowed 2 or fewer earned runs in 13 of 16 starts, with an extra run and better defense, his 11-3 record should be 14-1. With just an average offense the Nats would have a lock on 1st place in the NL East.
This season has become incredibly frustrating for Nat's fans. The expectations were very high for this team and all of it has been undermined by a terrible offense and in many ways, an equally bad defense. Only the pitching is doing it's job. Hard to explain why things have gone wrong. Just very disappointing as we near the halfway point and the Nat's are still at .500, 39-39.:( -- Al

Nats are now 40-40 in a very mediocre effort so far and the reason lays at the feet of the offense which has scored a mighty 2 runs or less in 35 of those 80 games and are 5-30 in those games. Impressive.:rolleyes2::mad: -- Al

Indeed!^&grin Chris Davis is a monster. Just hit #30 on the season.^&cool -- Al
Sammy, it's 'bombs away' in B-more again tonight. O's are hitting Hr's a the rate of 1 per inning. Lead 3-1 going into the bottom of the 4th, and Davis has unloaded #31! Boy is he on a tear. ^&grin -- Al

Great win Al!! I don't know what is better? A sweep of the evil yanks or a win against the evil steelers?? Both are sweet but we sure needed this series to stay close with the Red Sox , glad also to see we finished the month of June on a winning note, as far as Chris Davis man is on a mission, hope it continues...sammy

Well, we're at the halfway point in the season and frankly I am stunned that the Red Sox are in first place.

And they've done this despite going through two closers already and their best pitcher being on the shelf for about a month now.

Looks like the AL East will be a two team race going forward, the Rays don't have the money to spend to add to their roster come the trade deadline, the Jays made a nice run but are still in last place and the Yankees rank anywhere from 12th to 14th in the AL in average, Runs, slugging percentage and on base percentage; maybe the return of Arod, Captain Intangibles and the Grandyman will pump life into them, but I doubt it.

With the new wildcard format, winning the division is important, we'll see how the second half shakes out..............

I had given up in disgust on my Dodgers, but this kid Puig is playing out of his mind.

I wouldn't be so quick to give up: they're only four games and have won eight of their last ten. The Division is ripe for the taking.

Even the Angels (my son's team) are finally coming to life {eek3}

A gratifying end to Monday/beginning of Tuesday: a walk off, 13 inning come from behind win by the Mets against the D'backs. To bed!

You could see it coming. The O's threw in the towel on Jake Arrieta, (he of great potential, year after year), and Pedro Strop by trading them to the Cubs for starting pitcher Scott Feldman and back-up catcher Steve Clevenger. Arrieta just ran out of chances to prove himself. -- Al

Nat's rant, part, whatever because I've lost count. As I mentioned somewhere earlier, Stephen Strasburg has been the victim of the worst run support for any starting pitcher in baseball. Well, the Nats got him again tonight. He went 7 innings, gave up 3 hits, struck out 8, and 0 runs of any sort. What did he get? Another no-decision, that's what. Stras gives up 0 runs and that is exactly what the Nats scored for him, 0. It's enough to make a fan, or the pitcher, tear his hair out. Stras has now lowered his ERA to 2.24, allowed 2 or fewer runs in 13 of his 16 starts, and is still saddled with a 4-6 record. Jeez, what's he got to do to get a win for the Nats? Maybe he should just hit his own Hr's too.:rolleyes2: Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the Nat's 8th inning relief pitcher promptly gave up 4 runs. They are ticking me off. -- Al

Now have moved to 42-42 and 5-32 in games where they score 2 or fewer runs. Their mediocrity and inability to build any momentum is the classic hallmark of a .500 team. It is depressing.:( -- Al

Feldman gave the O's a QS in his first start for them tonight. Held them in the game until Chris Davis, aka 'The Beast', could hit his 32nd Hr and help the O's win 4-2 and go 11 games over .500. -- Al

Jonny Gomes comes through again, his third pinch hit home run and second walk off game winner tonight vs the AAA San Diego Padres (QUICK; name three players on their team)..............they need to keep winning as Davis is on track to hit 314 home runs this year for the go go Orioles (nothing to see there, nothing unusual about a guy hitting 32 bombs before the all star break, happens just about every year doesn't it?)...........

George, odd thing is, 10-15 years ago, Davis would have been lost in the crowd. :rolleyes2: -- Al
