Long night and ultimately a bad one for the O's who lost to Tampa 5-4 in 18 innings. Leaves them 2.5 games out, tied with KC, and chasing Tampa, Cleveland, and Texas. The O's have 9 games left and there are a lot of teams in this mix, as even the NYY are still only a half game back of the O's. 6 teams fighting for 2 spots. O's have been sputtering and this is the wrong time to do that. They need to rip off a winning streak otherwise it's adios. -- Al

Alex Rodriquez hit his 24th and career record setting Grand Slam in last night's game against SF. Another long-time record broken that will be under a cloud. It is a great accomplishment, nonetheless. -- Al

Congrats to the Red Sox - AL East Champs, worst to first .... way to go! Good riddance to Bobby V., Beckett, Gonzalez and Crawford. Whatever happens from here on out is just icing on the cake. :smile2:

Another crucial loss to Tampa this afternoon. Leaves the O's at #6 of the 6 teams fighting for the WC, pending the outcome of the other games tonight. Curtain is starting to come down on the O's chances unless they can find a way to win a game. -- Al

That 18 inning loss last night I believe was the nail in the coffin al, it has been a fun ride all Summer long but the O's aren't finishing games like last year, but I'm still excited about this team and just need a little pitching and they will right back in this next year, disappointed?? Yea, but after having 14 losing seasons in a row it's just fun to be in the hunt this late in the year...Sammy

Agree. It is fun being important to the race again. Couple of things stand out. As you point out, they have not finished games like last year. Last year the O's were 29-9 in 1-run games. This year they are 17-29. Still, they're ability to score had them in the race to the end. And the pitching, as you also said, needs help. Our starting pitching is strictly average, at best, with only Tillman being a standout. Chen and Gonzalez needed better years. All our starters need to go deeper into the games or the bullpen will wear down and be less effective, just like this year. O's can hit and field so the front office needs to address the pitching, big time. -- Al

I think that the O's will be a force to reckon with next year and beyond. I know that is little consolation but they really do have a lot to look forward to.

Well, the O's lost again. Now have lost 4 in a row and 8 of 12. Going in the wrong direction. Needing to win 3 of 4 from Tampa, they have lost the first 3 games in the series and have all but eliminated themselves, now standing 4.5 games back with just 7 to go. Nats are in the same boat, being 5.5 back with 7 to go. While both still are in the race in mathematical terms, they are both dead meat from a realistic POV. Looks like next year for them both but at least the Nats are going out with a bang, having gone 15-5 in September, compared to the O's fizzling out with a 10-11 in September crunch time. Overall, while pleased that both teams are winning and in the playoff races, I am a lot disappointed in the Nats and O's both missing the playoffs this year. I had expected a lot more. Such is the life of a baseball fan. -- Al

Oh well Al, it was a fun year (for the most part) and before you know it, the snows of 2013/2014 will have come and gone and it will be Spring time again!! and as the ol saying goes..:"you just wait til next year":)...Sammy

A disaster for the O's today as Manny Machado, their outstanding young 3rd baseman, has apparently torn up his left knee. He was legging out a single in the 7th inning and hit 1st base awkwardly. The film of it is ugly. Taken off the field by stretcher cart. I can only hope it is not as bad as it looked while occurring.:( This could really effect next year or further on. Gad, what an awful looking accident. -- Al

Adding insult to injury, the rays win the game on a walk-off HR. What a great day for the O's as they get swept and lose Machado.:rolleyes2: Bad ending. -- Al

Bad ending II - Nats eliminated. No post season. Boo-hoo.:( Is it April yet?^&grin -- Al

Al:

Like I said in my previous posts, I was pulling for them, sorry to see them eliminated. Like the O's they are a good young team with a great foundation for the future.

There is a real potential for a World Series with the O's vs. the Nats in the near future.

Thanks, I appreciate the thoughts. and I also believe such a WS a possibility. On another note, this season has been a perfect storm type of disaster for ALL my teams. Not a one of them, the Nats, O's, Giants, or Yanks, is making the post-season. I like St. Loo, but mainly in a traditional/nostalgic sort of way. So I guess I will pull for the underdogs this year. Go Pittsburgh and Oakland!^&grin That would make a nice east vs west finale. ^&grin -- Al

The Yanks needed the O's to show up a little against the Rays. Not sure we are going to fare any better. Now add CC to our walking wounded. Not even sure what out team will look like next year without Pettite, MO, Joba, Arod, , possibly Granderson, Kuroda, Gardner and others..and with our trying not to pay any luxury tax, how many other low payrol teams now will really suffer without Yankee dollars propping up their franchises. Maybe the big bad Yankees were not so bad after all...for MLB..Michael

Glad to hear Manny's injury wasn't as terrible as first thought, looks like 6-8 weeks, rehab, but should be ready to go for Spring ball, thank God, Machado is about as good as they get, great player, humble, no failed drug tests, good to the fans and wants to win in Baltimore, can't ask much more from a young player then that...Get Well Mach"O, we need you in a few short months!!...Sammy

Amen to that. Machado is the cornerstone of their excellent defense and one of the best, if not the best, third basemen in baseball. Ends up he had an issue with that knee while in the minors. If it was going to happen, at least it was at the end of the season. Now he can take his time and recover correctly. -- Al

Dice K shut out the Reds as Mets take two out of three. Since his initial starts he's actually pitched quite well.

I meant to post this yesterday and say that I was wrong about Dice-K having nothing left in the tank. It would seem he has quite a bit left. His 3 wins in a row have been impressively pitched. -- Al
