Baseball 2013 (3 Viewers)

Tampa is the prototype of how to stay competitive in today's market. They spot talent very well and trade a player before they have to. They have a great front office and one of the best managers around. The only thing wrong with them is Tropicana Field and their fans. Every team could learn a lot from them.

They battled all year long for the AL East crown, ended up in a double play in game situation and finished dead last in MLB attendance.

Their fans don't deserve a good team.

Heard someone say the other day that Tampa Bay was going to hold a Fan Appreciation Day, but they had to cancel it because the fan had a previous engagement. -- Al

"Interesting" crowd last night in Pittsburg, looked more like a WWE match type of crowd than a baseball crowd, was waiting for people to start hitting each other over the head with folding chairs at any minute.

And are they going to mock every pitcher in every inning in the Cardinals series, that got old fast.

We'll see what happens vs the Cardinals.

I think the one game play in concept is idiotic, you play 162 games and moving on comes down to one game?

The Rays benefited by being tied with the Rangers as Price went on Monday, which means instead of him going last night vs the Tribe (49 years and counting without a championship in that city, wow) and only being able to pitch once vs the Sox, he can go in games 2 and 5.

Big advantage to Tampa if it comes down to that.

So when is Maddon breaking out his hat with the ear flaps; I'd rather have my ears fall off than wear that thing.

.

The one game WC is actually a brilliant idea because it made winning the division important again. Not idiotic at all.

you get a "hell yea" from me George, I like the concept of the wild card but being in all rides on a 1 game winner take all is pretty stupid, make it at least best of 3 to make it a fighting chance for both team, or rock, paper, scisscors and just call it a day...Sammy

My biggest issue with it is what happens if due to match ups one team has their ace going and the other has their fifth starter going, it's unfair in that regard, nothing "brilliant" about that.

Baseball hasn't had a "brilliant" idea since Christ was in a crib; the league that wins the all star game gets HFA for the WS; how about the team with, oh I don't know, the BEST RECORD getting home field, just so idiotic........

It's one of the few they've had but it makes the pennant races meaningful and draws in fans of teams who might have been out of it with only one WC.

As far as who gets the extra home game in the WS I liked the old system where it rotated every year.

I think the part that gets me is that the season is made up of 3, 4 game series etc, then you get to the Wildcard and it is a one off? I have nothing against the WC, but they really should find a way to make it a 3 game series.

Leave the single game playoffs to the NFL.

I understand the concern about the 1 game and done WC system but I don't know where MLB could fit more playoff games in in terms of longer series. MLB is already up against the wall with the WS running to November. Longer series just pushes the WS even deeper into November and it's possible weather problems, especially in the upper mid-west, Atlantic coast, and north-east. The WS in New York, Boston, Detroit, etc. in mid-November may be more related to ice hockey than baseball. I suppose that MLB could shorten the regular season back to 154 games in order to fit more relevant playoff games in. -- Al

Al is right on target and please don't suggest shortening the season. It won't happen. Too much revenue loss for the teams.

The bad AJ Burnett showed up in St. Loo and has put the Pirates in a deep, black hole in game 1, 7-0 in the 4th. Going to be tough to climb back into this one. -- Al

With the addition of another wildcard team, you can't have a best of three between the two WC winners as the series would start on Tuesday, go till Thursday, so the division series would start on Saturday and you can't have teams sitting around for five days.

My concern for the Red Sox is they've been sitting around for four days, hope they don't come out rusty tomorrow night.................

George-

I thought about the layoff too. The Sox are laden with vets, I doubt it has much effect.

BTW, I think the Tampa/Sox series is the best of the bunch so far, I am really looking forward to it!

Hoo-hoo! Playoff baseball today. In fact, 12 straight hours of it. Starting at 1pm and ending somewhere after midnight. Love it all. Baseball and football all weekend. Happy as a pig in, err, mud. I really need to get a life.:rolleyes2:^&grin -- Al

Al:

Watching sports for 12 hours? Sounds like you have a life and a pretty darn good one at that!

To tell the whole truth, my TV happens to be in the same room as my soldiers, airplanes, most of my books, and computer. I'm kind of a one-roomed hermit as a result.:wink2: -- Al

You say hermit, I say connoisseur whose many interests are concentrated in one vast vault!

No quick fix and a tough loss for the Mets after all, it looks like Harvey will have the surgery and will miss all of 2014.
