Baseball 2013 (2 Viewers)

Crucial Game 5 to the Sox. Another superlative start from Lester and relief job by Uehara. Cards never really had a shot. Don't know what else to say about Super O except he is MVP, win or lose. Lester and Uehara deserve consideration, but Ortiz is batting .733. No brainer. Congrats to the Sox. Now they can win it at home. -- Al

I'm at a loss for words, I really am.

Never any drama with Koji, he's lights out.

Ortiz, what more can you say; Lester was nails tonight.

Ten down, one to go.

This has been a really enjoyable series to watch. Some fine playoff baseball being played and some outstanding post-season performances by Ortiz, Lester. and Uehara. I originally thought the Cards had the advantage in this series based on Wainwright and Wacha. The Sox have handled Wainwright and will have another shot at Wacha tonight. I still think Wacha may win tonight's game (if the Cards walk Ortiz 3-4 times:wink2:) but I no longer feel that the Cards can win the series. The Sox win in Game 5, taking 2 of 3 in St. Louis, has tipped the balance of what has been a well-matched series. IF the Cards get to Game 7, both teams will have to go with lower tier starting pitchers. Something inside me says that veteran Jake Peavy will step up for Boston in Game 7. At any rate, a Game 7 is subject to the same unexpected twists of fortune that any sudden-death, winner-take-all Championship Game is, so either team can win it. I just think that with homefield, with the Boston crazies, and clutch performances by the usual suspects in the Boston line-up, that the boys of Duck Dynasty are going to win this thing. I also think that St. Louis is capable of winning, but there is no room for error, and they would need a spectacular effort from their starting pitcher. I just don't think it will happen, plus, the Cards still have to get to Game 7. -- Al

The Red Sox managed to weather the DH-less three games in St. Louis so they will have a decided advantage at home tomorrow night for game 6. I'm still sticking with my prediction of BoSox in 6. Red Sox will have a chance to win the World Series at home for the first time in 1975 so I hope they do it.

I heard this morning Mike Shannon's (Cardinals broadcaster) version of the last out being made. It's as if it was just another game in the middle of the Summer. I understand that you're a little upset that your team lost but the guy is such a homer, it's ridiculous. Maybe that works down in St. Louis. When I listen to Sterling (the Yankees announcer) or the Mets announcers (and believe me, we know more about losing than most), you never get that. He is just a terrible play by play man.

Brad, of course Mike Shannon is a "homer". He has been with the Cardinal orginazation for over 50 years!
Having said that, I,ve met Shannon and I think he is a jerk. I worked with his brother in law and nephew on the police department and they both thought he was a jerk, although they had a more colorfull description!

Gary,

I think you don't have to be a homer just because you're announcer for the team. For example, Ron Darling played for the Mets and is one of their announcers and is constantly pointing out what's wrong. He's probably ticked off the organization but Ron is fair and balanced. McCarver used to work for the Mets back in the 80s and he used to really tick off the organization.

I think that's what a good announcer should be.

Brad

Team announcers are rather useless if they are incurable 'homers'. The Nats have a set of announcers that are are too rah-rah for my taste but the real irritant is FP Santangelo, who is a homer to the extreme and throws innumerable cute phrases in all the time. He has a really unfortunate habit of saying "There goes the no-hitter" every time a Nat gets the team's first hit in a game. The Nats had Ron Dibble at one point, a few seasons back, but he had the gall to criticize ownership/management on the way Strasburg was being handled and got fired as a result. Dibble wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I liked him because he called them like he saw them. I have used the mute button extensively when watching the Nats games. The O's use Jim Palmer and he is good. Knowledgeable and fair, he also calls them like he sees them. -- Al

Since we are discussing announcers would like anyones opinion if Joe Buck is biased towards the Cardinals, I don,t see it. I ask this as he grew up in St Louis and as you know his father Jack was the long time voice of the Cardinals, even Joe did numerous Cardinal games. I also believe he still lives in St Louis.
Don,t know if anyone knows this but Bob Costas started his career in St Louis. He was around 22 years old and right out of college when he was hired by KMOX radio to do the ABA Spirits of St Louis basketball games. He also did sports talk radio in St Louis. I remember thinking back then, this guy is good!

I like Joe Buck. Think he does a good job. Let's face it. All announcers are going to be somewhat partial to their team as the team is paying their salary. I think there is a difference between being a home and being somewhat partial.

Certainly I like the chances of the Red Sox winning the series. Winning Game 6 may be difficult with Wacha on the mound, but the Red Sox seem to find a way. As much as they have had their share of bad playoff losses - 1986, 2003 ALCS Game 7 among others - there is also a history of big moments in the opposite direction - Dave Henderson against the Angels, the 2004 Yankees series, Carlton Fisk in Game 6, the 2007 ACLS comeback against Cleveland. I liked what I saw with Ortiz showing tremendous leadership in the dugout, as well with the bat. I don't see baseball as one of those sports where you can just turn it up physically when you need it, not like basketball or hockey. It is so much a mental game. Did the last two losses in St. Louis get in the heads of the Cardinals so that they don't get enough hitting in Game 6 or make crucial mistakes? I am not so sure. I think that might be the case if they were shelled, but they know those games were won and lost on a few plays.

The Cardinals have a good chance to win tomorrow night with Wacha, but I have a feeling the Red Sox will find a way again. I might not be from New England, but I fell in love with the Red Sox back in the 1975 World Series and have been a lifelong fan; I won't be in Fenway, but I will be watching with my son (we took a tour of the park last year, which my kids loved), and I really want to see the Sox celebrate with the greatest fans in baseball's greatest stadium.

Loved the audio of him yucking it up in game four when the Sox were holding Wong on at first in the ninth inning "Why would they be doing that, that's silly, ha, ha, ha,..........and there's a throw over to first and they picked him off. Unbelievable."

Beautiful.

You have not heard a true homer until you hear Mike Krukow on the local Giants’ broadcasts. We have the smooth voice of Jon Miller and it constantly gets drowned out by Krukow and his completely biased commentary. Miller is continuously trying to maintain an air of impartiality only to have Krukow ruin it time and time again.

Didn't they used to call him the Polish Prince. Remember him as being a pretty good pitcher (who also hated the Mets).

George, Ortiz IS the Sox in this series, so far. His stats are unbelievable. In the 4 games, he has 8 of Boston's 24 total hits, 2 of their 3 Hr's, 2 of their 4 doubles, and 5 of their 18 RBI's. He is batting .727 while the Sox as a team are batting .189. Without Ortiz, the Sox are 16 for 116. Doesn't matter what anyone else has done. Without Ortiz this series is over. He is 'da Man'. His offensive heroics are simply unworldly. If the Sox win this series, it will be because Ortiz has willed them to it. -- Al

If it was Arod carrying the Yanks in this situation, it would be all about his cheating being a travesty to MLB, but since its Manny's PED buddy, Ortiz, well, never mind! Michael

We had Miller in Baltimore for ages. He is the best announcer I have ever listened to. -- Al

The Gold Gloves have been announced and I wanted to congratulate the O's as a team, who have picked up 3 of them. The awards went to first time winner 3B Manny Machado, and repeat winners JJ Hardy at SS, and Adam Jones in CF. Well done.^&cool -- Al

I saw that yesterday but I'm scratching my head as to how Adam Jones wins over Mike Trout ^&confuse

Probably because Trout had 0 outfield assists whereas Jones had 11. Plus Jones had a DWAR of +0.04 while Trout's DWAR was -0.08. All of Jones' numbers were better except the Fielding %, which was .996 to .995, in favor of Trout. -- Al

From all that I've read he was considered a weak candidate and Trout and others considered better ones. The name mentioned as the most likely candidate was Ellsbury. I also saw that he received it in 2012 when he most assuredly didn't deserve it. However, the GGs tend to be that way; they keep giving it to the same person year after year. Unreal :rolleyes2:

Personally, I have never understood the GG's. Numbers are apparently not the only consideration. -- Al
