Baseball 2013 (2 Viewers)

spring training games today!! Been a looooooong off season and glad to see some baseball being played again, my O's up 5-3 against twins in the 8th, welcome back baseball you have been missed :)...Sammy
Amen to that! The O's look like they should be better than last year, personel wise. Whether or not they repeat their amazing record in 1-run games and extra inning games is another matter. Their pitching sure looks deep though. -- Al

No love for the Orioles:( ESPN the magazine baseball issue just came out and have my O's finishing dead last in the AL East, we have Roberts,Reinhold,Markakis all healthy to start the year for a change, Manny M. at third base has big league playing time to start this year instead of being in the minors, a good pitching staff with a possible great in Dylon Bundy as a rookie, oh well I guess it wouldn't be the same if the O's weren't picked to finish last:) I think I'll hold onto this issue until the end of the year...Sammy

Dead last? That's absurd. Now, I know it doesn't mean much but they're undefeated in ST so far.

It will be a competive division that's for sure.

Dead last? That's absurd.
Agreed; all the Orioles need to do is win another 30 or so one run/extra inning games like they did last year and BINGO, they are right there battling for the division title or one of the wild card slots.

I mean, how tough will that be to pull that off again, teams do that all the time, right?

It was pretty interesting last year to see their bullpen pull out game after game, win after win, only to melt down in the playoffs vs the Yankees.

Not as easy to win in the playoffs vs some tomato can like the Royals in July now is it.

you know George I was just glad to have a winning record after 14 years, the playoff game win over Texas and the 5 game playoff series with the Yanks was all gravy, I surely do not think any team will win as many close games as the O's did last year for awhile, but this year with a much better batting line-up I hope the O's are winning those late games instead of extra innings, I will throw this out there, the 2013 Orioles will not be the last place team in the AL East, don't know if we will go to the playoffs again but there is to much young talent on this team to fall off that much...Sammy

Well the whole baseball world is picking Toronto to win the division, I can see Tampa and New York fighting for second place with the Orioles not too far behind, maybe even right there for the wild card.

The Red Sox IMO will finish in last place, they have by far the least amount of talent in the AL East, so you're safe there Sammy............

I think this year will be the sinking of the great Yankees to the cellar, (sorry Louis) they are terribly banged up already with Jeter, Arod, and then another starter broke his arm this week, CC coming off surgery, thier top closer hasn't pitched in year, and that team is getting old, where as the O's, Rays, are catching up with them in talent, Boston will bounce back with a much better manager and of course none is going to beat the BlueJays :) so I'm picking the Yanks to finish last, my goodness that just has a nice sound to it:):)...Sammy

I don't think so. They still field Robbie Cano (.320, 30 homers, 100 RBI's, gold glove at 2nd), Teixiera (.250, 30 homers, 100 RBI's, gold glove at first), Sabathia (at least 18 wins), and Jeter and Granderson (.230, but 40 homers and 100 RBI's) will be healthy soon, they added Youkilis (.250, 20 homers, 80 RBI's, solid third base), the god of walks (his on base percentage is always close to .400), and will be getting back that young phenom pitcher they traded Jesus Montero for sometime this summer as well. There bullpen is solid, and once Granderson gets healthy they will have one of the fastest outfields in recent memory. I far prefer Youlilis to what's left of A-Roid at third, if Jeter gets healthy he will continue to hit around .300, and Ichiro and Gardner should be capable of adding a baserunning dimension the Yanks haven't had in years (at least 60+ stolen bases between them). In my eyes, even lacking some of the power numbers, particularly at catcher, I still see 88-90 wins.

The AAA Red Sox will finish last, your Orioles will finish second to last (they aren't winning 30 one run games this year), the Rays will finish third (they still have a terrific young pitching staff), the Yankees second and the Blue Jays will either win the Division, or be a total bust like the expensive and hastliy thrown together Marlins were last year, bumping everyone up one spot.

Well, I see the Angels are offering SuperTrout only a $20K raise for his fantastic rookie season. That is on top of his major league minimum salary, at that. It seems Trout and his agent had been hoping for a significantly higher figure as a reward. Way to go Angels. Tick off your team's young superstar by being cheap. Kind of curious when you consider what they have spent on their other players of late. Strange way to try and save money. -- Al

Just read a breaking story that horseface has a strained wrist and is out 8 weeks.

And Granderson as you know has a broken forearm.

And Captain Intangibles is coming off shattering his ankle.

Maybe Sammy was right there Louis, the Yankees haven't played one regular season game yet and are already banged up pretty good.

You are right. If they don't pick up a corner infielder to replace Teixiera via a trade, they are screwed. The one thing the Yankees absolutely could not afford was an injury to a corner infielder. Losing that gold glove defense, 30+ homers and 100+ RBI's takes the Yankees from 88-90 wins down to 80-82 wins.

I would make a deal with the Twins for Justin Morneau. He is in the last year of his contract, so it won't screw up the 189 Million self imposed salary cap for next year, he will make 14 million this year, which makes him too expensive for a rebuilding Twins team, and he showed signs of recovering from his injuries next year . . . with 20+ homers, plus he always hits well in Yankee Stadium.

This is a deal that really makes little sense for the Yankees unless Texeira is out for the whole year or a good part of it. Also, do you think the Twins are just going to oblige and turn him over for nothing. If anything, they are more likely to want to hold him until the trading deadline and then extract more picks from a team. In addition, $14 million is not chump change and the Yankees are cost conscious these days. If they were to add that much salary whey did they not even bother to attempt to bring Martin back (or sign the RF who is now with the Tribe).

I saw the Yankees have been in touch with Chipper Jones to see if he'd come out of retirement, but he said thanks but no thanks.

Is Chavez still on the team; if so, stick him in at third and put Youk over at first.

Don't feel bad Louis; after signing Ortiz to a two year, 22 million dollar contract in the off season, he has yet to swing a bat as his achilles heel is still acting up, the same one that forced him to shut it down last year.

So the guy has a bum achilles from last year, yet they signed him to a two year deal anyway?

That's brilliant.

April 1st sneaks ever closer as the Nationals have named Strasburg as their starter against the Marlins at 1pm in DC. Be there or be square.
No word on the O's starter in Tampa on April 2nd yet. -- Al

I'm not going to feel bad. I have very low expectations this year, with all of the injuries. I have a partial season ticket plan (a gift from my lovely wife) so I will go to the games, hope to show my son and daughter Mariano in his last season, and hope for another .300+ season from Derek Jeter. If they stink this year, I have a feeling the 189 Million limit will go out the window next season.

From what I read, including the article I posted, Hal (who is effectively running the team) will not go over the $189 because Baseball has, in effect, a salary cap, and the consequences of getting hit with the tax are major. This is a different person than his father or brother.

News out of Florida is that the Nat's pitcher, Jordan Zimmerman, has developed a devastating change-up. I'm thinking 'Cy Young' winner here.:wink2::wink2: -- Al
