Sammy, I know it's way too early to panic but I am a bit concerned about the O's starting pitching. Seems to be taking up where it left off with a lot of inconsistency. 4 games in and the starters have no wins, 3 losses, no quality starts, with only stalwart Tillman holding up his end. Jimenez, Chen, and Gonzalez all got beat up with Chen and Gonzalez looking especially bad. The starters have given up 33 hits in 20 innings, along with 16 runs. I hope someone steps up to help Tillman or we could be looking at the same starting problems that we have had for the last couple of seasons. -- Al

I've only seen a small sample (three games); IMO, they are going to hit with the best of them, Cruz, Jones, Davis and Muchacho leading the way. Starting pitching looks weak at best, Tillman looked ok on opening day, gave up some bombs that died in the wind.

Defensively, they don't look very sharp, Davis made two errors in one game, Cruz is a disaster in left, he should wear a butchers smock out there instead of a uniform.

They will win their share of games as MLB pitching is so watered down, I see a lot of 7-5, 9-7, 11-9 wins in their future....................

Pretty accurate analysis from what I have seen. Need to get the bats going. Interesting about the fielding as last year the O's only committed 54 total errors, lowest in MLB history. -- Al

Gary,

Who are you kidding? Assuming you were alive, I doubt you were all of five years old :wink2:

Brad

No Brad I was not 5 years old, but 6 years old. I do remember my grandpa had a special tv package that he was able to get a few Browns games on tv. No I never attended a Browns game at Sportsman Park, but I did collect their baseball cards.

Talk about nostalgia, nothing reminds me of being a kid more than baseball cards.

Oh, that I still had my collection from the 60's. I have a few odd cards from back then but the vast majority of the collection went to my younger brother during my college years. He was a real wheeler-dealer and he was always buying, selling, and trading, so most of my old collection got scattered. Not that it mattered to me back then, but it would be nice to have them back now. I still have a few of my Marichals, Mantles, and O's. -- Al

All of six? Well, guess I was off by a year :wink2:

When I was a kid we used to flip 'em. Probably destroyed a fortune that way.

I have related this story to a few of the old timers. I collected baseball cards as a kid in the 50,s & 60,s. And I kept them. They were in my parents attic and one day in the early70,s I climbed in the attic and took them back to my house. On TV in 1978 there was a story about a baseball card show being held in St Louis, I went, I got hooked. Long story short I then started filling in the cards I needed plus buying current cards. This was before card collecting became a rage. Example, and I hesitated thinking I was spending too much, I bought a mint Nolan Ryan rookie card for $5, when I started selling my collection it listed at $850. In 2002 I got hooked on K&C and sold my cards to pay for my new hobby.
Then 2 years ago I got hooked on collecting game worn NHL jerseys, sold those early K&C sets I bought with the card money to pay for jerseys.
Lesson, don,t EVER say you won,t sell something, you will.

Sox have lost two in a row to the Brewers.

Wow.

You know, if you put a gun to my head and said "Name four Brewers or I'll blow your brains out", I'd be a dead man as other than Braun, I can't name another and I'm not sure if I even spelled his last name right.

Nice to see Reynolds on the Brewers, he used to hit a #$%^@#$ home run off the Sox every time at bat when he was with Baltimore.

And Overbay is still in baseball? I thought he was 60.

When the season is over, the Brewers are going to look back on this series as the main reason why they were able to finish fourth in the NL Central.

Seriously; two in a row to the Brewers. That's almost as bad as losing two in a row to the AAAstros.

Almost.

The O's starter, Tillman, just outdueled Verlander, to win 3-1 and give the O's starters their 1st win of the year. Tillman did an outstanding job, only allowing 5 hits in his 8.1 innings. Thank goodness an O's starter stood tall today. It has been ugly with the exception of Tillman's 2 starts. Now maybe the rest of the guys will show up with Tillman giving them an example to follow. -- Al

The only other Brewers I can name are Robin Yount and Stan Ross. And one of those is from a movie.

The only Brewer I can think of is the mascot, I think his name is "Mr Bratwurst". Didn,t he do something stupid during a game a few years back?
George I,m surprised you are not a casual fan of Milwaukee since in a round about way it has a Boston conection. The Boston Braves moved to Milwaukee in 1954, then after they moved to Atlanta, the Brewers came into being.
Gary

The Brew-crew has a pretty decent group of starting pitchers headed by Gallardo, Garza, and Lohse. Plus they have a good closer in Francisco Rodriguez. They also have an ex-Nat, Zach Duke, in the pen. George's favorite ex-Oriole, Mark Reynolds, is also playing for them. Add in Braun and Overbay, and that is the extent of my Brewer knowledge. -- Al

With a name like Mr Bratwurst, he doesn't have to do a thing to be stupid, the name gets him there already.

Milwaukee; I remember in the late 70's and mid 80's how annoying they were, with those God awful pinstripe uniforms (pinstripes begin and end with the MFY's, they are the only team that should wear them), they should have worn clown shoes instead of spikes.

They played in that dump County Stadium, remember the giant beer keg they had in the outfield and whenever one of the Brewers hit a home run, some local wino would slide down a chute out of the keg? Cecil Cooper, Sixto Lescano, Stormin Gorman Thomas, Don Money, Sal Bando, Rollie Fingers, they gave me nightmares as a kid.

Plus that had that weird looking triangle on the front of their helmets and caps, it was yellow, like the Orioles wear now, that goofy white triangle on the front on their helmets and caps.

That's so 1970's/80's.

And speaking of 70's and 80's, remember when teams went away from the classic button down jerseys and switched to those softball looking pullovers, wow were they hideous looking, SO glad teams went back to the button downs in the late 80's and never looked back.

Ok, uniform rant over.

I'm a fan of the Atlanta Braves just for the reason you pointed out, used to be the Boston Braves.

I'm pretty sure the Brewers used to be the Seattle Pilots, I think they moved to Milwaukee from Seattle in 1970 and the Brewers were born.

Right you are, George. The Seattle Pilots were an expansion team that played one season, 1969, before relocating to Milwaukee. The Pilots went 64-98 and are chiefly remembered as being the team for which Jim Bouton played and wrote his book Ball Four about. -- Al

Thanks for confirming that Al; one season? Did they go bankrupt or something and end up moving as a result instead of folding?

I think bankruptcy was the final factor but a lot of stuff led up to it. The team was underfunded and played in a run-down minor league stadium with no immediate solution, like a new stadium, in sight. The facilities were so bad that the team couldn't draw and ownership refused to sink more money into the club. There's more to it but that's what I remember. -- Al

George, you got me thinking about goofy uniforms. Didn,t the White Sox wear something resembling unis from the turn of the century also didn,t they also wear shorts? I also hated those Pirates caps from the late 70,s the ones with the rings around them.
Also in hockey I know the Flyers & Hartford Whalers wore them, the long pants! I think the NHL banned them because if a player fell those pants would cause him to slide much faster than with the traditional short pants with socks.
Can,t mention bad uniforms without the Canucks godawfull yellow & black with the gigantic V.
Gary

Right you are Gary, they wore throwback uniforms to the turn of the century that were terrible, plus the shorts.

Wow; shorts.

And those hockey pants were stupid, as were those Canuck uniforms, just brutal.

While we're on the subject, those Astros Hawaiian shirt uniforms were awful. The Pirates hats were pretty bad, but I liked all the combinations they wore back in the day, but the all yellow ones were bad.

The A's uniforms were pretty cool with the green and yellow tops, also the first team to wear white cleats in the 70's. When I was in high school in the late 1970's, all the teams wore white cleats.

Too bad the California Golden Seals were also owned by Finley, he made them wear white skates.

Unreal.

One cool thing about all of the Pittsburgh team uniforms (Pen, Pirates & Steelers) is that they are all yellow and black.

Yea, playing softball in the 70,s white spikes were a must have. My first pair of hockey skates were blue, just like the ones the Blues wore.
Speaking of nostalgia, I will never forget and I mean never forget walking into Sportsman Park for my first Cardinal game. The color was unbelievable. The grass was the greenest thing I ever seen, the red shinguards on the catchers were the deepest red, just unbelievable. Now back then the only live baseball was on a small black & white tv.
Every kid should have that experiance. Went to Sunday doubleheaders. Can you believe today teams giving you 2 games for the price of one. Also remember my dad complaining about the cost of a bottle of beer, 35 cents!!!
