Baseball 2014 (2 Viewers)

That their closer is hurt is probably part of the problem; I don't think the Mets would have beaten them last weekend had he been available.
Thanks, Brad. Didn't realize that. The multitude of injuries has gotten away from me this season. Everyone seems to have key people on the DL. The Nats just lost starting 3B Zimmerman with a broken thumb and starting CF Span with concussion symptoms. 11 games in and they're falling like flies. Good thing baseball is non-contact.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Perhaps those losses aren't looking as bad now as they had been. Last year the Brewers lost most of their hitters to injury (or suspension) and their pitchers couldn't find the plate. So far this year the story is very different.

The good thing about being a Brewers fan? You get a lot of time to yourself! I've been on the bandwagon since 1982. It's a small wagon, and people usually only get on it because of the beer and brats.

Pete

Sox have lost two in a row to the Brewers.

Wow.

You know, if you put a gun to my head and said "Name four Brewers or I'll blow your brains out", I'd be a dead man as other than Braun, I can't name another and I'm not sure if I even spelled his last name right.

Nice to see Reynolds on the Brewers, he used to hit a #$%^@#$ home run off the Sox every time at bat when he was with Baltimore.

And Overbay is still in baseball? I thought he was 60.

When the season is over, the Brewers are going to look back on this series as the main reason why they were able to finish fourth in the NL Central.

Seriously; two in a row to the Brewers. That's almost as bad as losing two in a row to the AAAstros.

Almost.

If anyone is wondering if Colon is taking steroids, they should look at yesterday's game. 5 innings, 11 hits and 9 earned runs.

Could be a clever ruse by Colon to throw everyone off the scent. After all, if he went 22-0 at his age, people might get suspicious. :rolleyes2:^&grin -- Al

The O's starting pitchers are starting to give me reason to believe. After posting just 1 Quality Start in their first 8 games, the O's have gotten 4 QS in their last 5, with Tillman and Norris allowing 0 earned runs and Chen allowing just 1. I like how this is going and will be very happy if some form of consistency develops from here on out. Now the O's need to get Davis and Jones' Hr swings going. -- Al

Al:

Great point about Davis and Jones, once they get going, coupled with their recent good pitching, the O's could be a legitmate threat in the East.

Well the Red Sox are right where I thought they'd be, in last place.

In 2013 that is.

Yep, I picked them to finish in last place in 2013 and they won the WS.

I still cannot believe that team won a WS, the key was excellent starting pitching, a money bullpen/closer and clutch hitting.

This year, they are 6-37 with RISP, which is brutal.

This could be a long year; well I've got bigger fish to fry, the Bruins are in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Well, the Mets have gotten to .500 and have had a successful road trip, 5-3 so far (with one to go) so I guess all those Cassandras (present company included) have to shut up for awhile {eek3}

Don't give up hope too quickly. I am not one to put any stock in the first month of the season. The last two times the Giants won the World Series they were mediocre (doing my Sherman voice on that one) at best during April and not much better in May.

Not to shabby Al, the O's are 1 game out and playing solid ball right now, wish we had Machado, Hardy healthy, did hear D. Bundy has begun his rehab, so just got to hold the fort and play decent ball to we get a little more healthy...Sammy

The injury bug has really bitten my two teams, the O's and Nats. As bad as the O's injuries have been, the Nats have 8 players on the DL, including a third of their starting position players, 3b, Cf, and catcher. These, along with the injury to starting pitcher Fister, has made daily line-ups a real adventure. I'd love to see what the O's and Nats would be capable of, firing on all cylinders. The O's got a good 5 innings out of Gonzalez on their way to a shutout against Tampa, so their pitching continues to show well. -- Al

Reading all this stuff about Puig defecting from Cuba. It is ridiculous that we have an embargo on Cuba that now dates back to 1960. Over 50 years. It seems to be kept in place simply because the politicians don't want to antagonize a small, but vocal group of exiles.

That story about Puig is quite incredible.

Also quite incredible is this embargo. It brings to mind the words that have been uttered about Mexico, allegedly by Porfirio Diaz (last president before the Mexican Revolution in 1912): "Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States."

Ah, a quote from history. Also the title of a very good book on the Mexican War of 1846-48 by John S.D. Eisenhower, called "So Far From God". Not baseball related but it is a good read. -- Al

Have you read A Wicked War that came out last year. That was quite good althugh the author hates Polk.

Anyway, back to baseball. Mets swept DBacks to go over 500, at least temporarily. Trumbo looks lost out there for the DBacks and he's a much better player than he's showing. I don't think Gibson is long for this world. They've gotten off to a terrible start.

Brad, I haven't read it but I have heard of it. The list of things I would like to read but never seem to get to grows longer by the day. :redface2: The problem is even worse during the baseball season.:rolleyes2: -- Al

I am amazed at how bad Arizona is. 4-14 over-all, 7.5 games back and 1-11 at home? I know it is early in the season but 7.5 back after playing 18 games?

That is why Gibson will probably be fired. 1-11 at home is just not acceptable, especially for a 500 team in '13.

Boy, the Nats are off to a sluggish start. They are currently 9-6, not horrible, but that record is hiding some ugly baseball. They seem to have forgotten how to field as they lead MLB in errors (prior to tonight's game which is still in progress, with 3 more errors on the board) and more importantly, the starting pitching has been very inconsistent. Counting tonight's game, the Nats have trailed in 12 of their 16 games. It is tough to maintain a winning record when you are behind 3 out of every 4 games. At least they hang tough and have shown an ability to come from behind. The starting pitching has to toughen up and perform as they are capable. With only 7 QS, they are underperforming, with every one of the 5 starters having been shelled at least once. Maybe the pending return of Fister will help things improve. Also learning to field would help.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Al:

Great point about the fielding. Everytime I watch a game I see errors on simple plays. What ever happened to getting it to the pitcher when he is covering first or making a short throw from second/third to first? And don't get me started on outfielders who have no idea what a cut-off man is.
