Pitch-count mania strikes again. Atlanta's Aaron Harang has a no-hitter against the Mets through 7 innings, but has a high pitch count. Result is he's done after 7 and the relief pitcher promptly gives up a hit, so no no-hitter. Don't know that I can blame the Brave's manager though as Harang had thrown 121 pitches and still had to go 2 more innings which would have put the pitch count north of 150. Too many for even an old-timer like me. Still, I might have wanted to see how Harang did in the 8th before yanking him. A real easy 8th may have given him a shot in the 9th, but probably not, plus Harang was probably totally gassed. -- Al

Interesting week here in the Bay Area, the Giants took 2 of 3 from the Dodgers, the A's took 2 of 3 from the Angels, the Sharks beat the Kings in game 1 of their Cup playoff series and the Warriors play the clippers tomorrow in round 1 of the NBA playoffs.

Of all of those teams the A's probably deserve the most press after going 7-2 on a tough road trip. And yet they do not even get any attention.

I've got ESPN on this morning in the background while I am on the computer, catching up on baseball; so the Sox are in last place with an 8-10 record?

Great, but they're on a one game winning streak and are only two games behind the MFY's, who got murdered last night in Tampa, 16-1.

If they had scored two touchdowns and gone for the two point conversion on the second one, they would have been right there for the tie.

Have to admit, nothing makes me happier than a MFY curb stomping, great job there Nova, looks like he had two pitches last night, balls and home runs.

I also see Ellsbury is hitting 365; you fraud, you turncoat, you traitor.

I'm going to the game Tuesday night, first row monster seats in left center, I am going to ride him all night long.

Boy, the Nats are off to a sluggish start. They are currently 9-6, not horrible, but that record is hiding some ugly baseball. They seem to have forgotten how to field as they lead MLB in errors (prior to tonight's game which is still in progress, with 3 more errors on the board) and more importantly, the starting pitching has been very inconsistent. Counting tonight's game, the Nats have trailed in 12 of their 16 games. It is tough to maintain a winning record when you are behind 3 out of every 4 games. At least they hang tough and have shown an ability to come from behind. The starting pitching has to toughen up and perform as they are capable. With only 7 QS, they are underperforming, with every one of the 5 starters having been shelled at least once. Maybe the pending return of Fister will help things improve. Also learning to field would help.:rolleyes2: -- Al
The Nats are driving me nuts. Off to a slow (for expectations) start, they managed to split 4 games with St. Louis this weekend, barely. They won game 4 today in the bottom of the 9th, 3-2. Problem is they left 17 (seventeen, 1-7,) men on base! They squandered chance after chance to put this game away and couldn't do it. Fact is they trailed 2-0 after 6 innings, stranding something like 13 men in those 6 innings. Boy, I sure hope they wake up and start playing to their potential soon or I'm headed towards a 28 day recovery program.:rolleyes2: -- Al

I saw where Harper got yanked from a game for not hustling, Matt Williams won't put up with that garbage, he's a no nonsense guy, a great player for the Giants and Diamondbacks.............

Yeah, Matt had to 'splain to the kid that the object is to RUN ALL THE WAY to first base when the ball is in play. Chances are Bryce will remember that little lesson.:rolleyes2::wink2: -- Al

Al/George:

I always liked Matt Williams when he was a Giant. He hustled and had great respect for the game of baseball. It is nice to see he has brought that same attitude as a manager.

With that said, it seems like Harper has learned his lesson.

It is still very early on the season, but I am still looking forward to a Giants versus the ‘Nats NLCS.

:)

Jason, I could certainly live with that NLCS. Prior to the Nats showing up, the Giants were always my favorite NL team. Back in the old days, when newspapers ruled the earth, following the Giants from the East coast was always an exercise in 'day late' information. Always had to wait 2 days for the scores. Hard to believe there was life before ESPN and the internet. It was always a huge thrill when MLB's Game of the Week was a Giants game. It was the only way I could see them live. Seemed like I saw quite a few Giants vs Cards, or Giants vs Dodgers, but that just may be my wishful memories. -- Al

Bruins won yesterday 4-1, Sox came back from 5-0 to beat the Orioles 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth.

Happy Easter to me...................:salute::

Indeed. The O's sure choked that one. One thing for sure, MLB has to tweak this whole review process thing as the flow of the game is being seriously undermined. I've noticed that the Nat's games are now taking 20-30 minutes longer to play because of all the messing around between managers and umpires. My Easter was a push. Nats won in the bottom of the 9th and the O's lost in the bottom of the 9th. Karma is an odd thing. -- Al

Looks like Ivan Nova will be undegoing Tommy John surgery. There seems to be an epidemic of pitchers this year who need this surgery. The general consensus from orthopedists seems to be that pitchers are putting too much stress on their arms when they are in their teens and younger and it catches up with them as pros.

This seems to have been a worry for quite a while, but the problem has only recently started to be addressed at lower levels in the kids leagues with pitch counts and innings counts. There were no such restrictions when my kids were playing during the 90's. Though both my boys pitched quite a lot, they never had to have ligament replacement although one did have elbow surgery, but he was doing double duty as catcher and pitcher which was way too much strain on his arm. The big problem seems to be the kids throwing breaking stuff before their arms can stand the strain at the younger ages. Kids shouldn't be going anywhere near curves and sliders before high school. -- Al

Al:

I remember the days of no ESPN. I got most, if not all of my out of town scores/info from the newspaper. I always loved the game of the week, Joe Garagiola and Vin Scully were the broadcasters. It was fun to see other teams play along with the healthy dose of Giants baseball that I received locally. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of the Giants, but I am an even bigger fan of baseball itself.

Hi Jason, don't forget "this week in Baseball" with Mel Allen doing the calls on Saturday afternoon, along with Monday nite baseball on ABC,and the NBC game of the week that's all I ever saw growing up...Sammy

Sammy:

Great call on this week in baseball, truly one of my all-time favorite sports shows. That brings back so many memories, I used to love the music they played at the end as they showed some classic plays, I think it was entitled Gathering Crowds or Gathering Clouds?

Wow, almost a month into the season and the AL East is a dog fight, 1st to last seperated by 2 and a half games, this is fun, I would love to see the O's with a 10 game lead but when you have 3-4 even 5 teams fighting it out every nite to stay close in the standings it keeps everything exciting and interesting everyday, I know it's early but all 5 teams look to be able to beat each other at any moment, another good round tonite, O's vs. Jays, Sox/Yanks, man, who will be in first tommorow?:)...Sammy

Without a doubt, the AL East is the best division in baseball.

Well that was a fun night at the ballpark, Lester looked like crap and Ellsbury hit double and triples all over the place.

Other than back to back bombs by Ortiz and Napoli, the Sox did nothing against Cy Tanaka; the Red Sox sign a highly touted Japanese pitcher and he stinks on ice. The Yankees sign one and he's a top of the rotation ace who looks like a combination of Cy Young, Bob Gibson, Jim Palmer and Roy Haladay.

Awesome.

Good thing we left and went to a bar to watch most of the Bruins game; just about total domination tonight by the Black and Gold.

So it was a good night afterall; goodnight baseball, goodbye for a couple of months so I can focus on hockey and the NFL draft......................

Nats stunk up the ballpark for the 2nd night in a row but at least I can say I saw Pujols hit #499 and #500. -- Al
