Baseball 2014 (2 Viewers)

I'm excited; they have the second best record in baseball (Brewers are first??............ok then....), second in home runs to Colorado and you know all about their ballpark, Morse is the beast other teams wished they had signed and their lead off hitter is healthy again.

I love it..................

Come on George...show me some love here! Who can't get excited about a team that has a sausage race at every game (I'm partial to the brat myself)??

This past weekend they lost their first road series of the year...last year I think they lost EVERY road series.

It was a rough weekend in that joke they call a stadium in Denver. It's like playing fantasy league baseball 'cept this was no fantasy, more like a nightmare.

Interesting you mention Morse. Morse was an extremely popular player when here with the Nats. He was a huge fan favorite and a big plus in the clubhouse. He has some big numbers here and letting him go was not a popular move and some, (like me) still think it was an big error not keeping him. The Nats could certainly use his bat right now. -- Al

Giants got there first sweep in Atlanta since 1988 this past weekend.

I am not going to get too excited but so far, so good.
Great job by SF. Only thing I'm not happy with is that my on-again, off-again Nats couldn't take advantage of the beat-down by taking 1st place away from the Braves. It was there for the taking but we just can't seem to get any headway built up. As George says, 20% of the season gone, and the Nats still can't find their footing. Thank goodness they are staying close while trying to get healthy and find the key. -- Al

I'm happy for you Pete, totally unexpected, just like the Red Sox last year. In all seriousness, you have some very good young players, I saw so up close and personal a few weekends ago, best of luck to you the rest of the way...............plus you have KRod, he's in my top 5 in the favorite player category............love that guy..........

Al:

As I mentioned before I think the Nats just have to stay close while they get some guys back off of the DL. The Braves are good but when they are healthy I think the Nats are just as good if not better.

Have I mentioned that baseball is a funny game? The other night, the Nats lost a 1-0 game to the Phillies and a chance to take 1st place from the skidding Braves. Last night the Dodgers came to town with Greinke on the mound. Well, the Nats beat the Dodgers and Greinke 4-0 (after a 3+ hour rain delay in the 4th). The game went too late for me (it resumed around 11:30ish, but I went snoozeville after the 7th, around 12:30) and I awoke to find the Nats in 1st place. Along with the O's also having a piece of 1st place, it ended up being a pretty good Monday. Now we have to face Kershaw. Lucky us. Maybe it will rain some more. It is awfully gray outside...:wink2:^&grin -- Al

This post sums up why I love baseball. You go to sleep in second and wake up in first!!!!!!!!! 162 games will do that to you!

Interesting stat on the O's compared to last year's power numbers. Last season there were 3 big boppers that carried the O's in terms of Hr's and RBI's. They were Davis (53 & 138), Jones (33 & 108), and Hardy (25 & 76). Big numbers that averaged 22 Hr's and 64 RBI's per 32 games played (20% of a season) last year. After 30 games this year, the 3 men have a grand total of 3 Hrs and 36 RBI's. A total power failure, yet the O's entered tonight's game tied for 1st in the AL East. Don't know how to explain that other than Cruz has made up for some of the HR's and all of the missing RBI's by hitting 9 dingers and getting 29 RBI's. Still, it is remarkable that the O's have done so well with such fall off from 3 key players. -- Al

Ha! I knew my public chastisement of the O's power hitters would work. Jones had 1 HR this season, until tonight. He has hit 2 in the first 4 innings of the game in Tampa. Now I need to get to work on the pitchers.:rolleyes2: :wink2: {sm3} -- Al

It looks like the Achilles heel for the Giants rotation this year might be Lincecum. He had another rough outing today and at times he seems downright lost on the mound. This in and of itself would not be a problem but the Giants owe him $17 mil for this year and $18 mil next year. He will be impossible to trade and too expensive to release.

Jason, what is the problem with Lincecum? He has gone from a terrific #1 starter to a hit or miss #4 type starter. His fall off seems to have started in 2012. While not a total disaster, his numbers and effectiveness are definitely down. Is it arm trouble or something else? Did he just burn his arm out with those fantastic 4 seasons from 2008-11? I like watching him but he sure hasn't been the same pitcher over the last 2+ seasons. -- Al

A nightmare of a visit to Miami: sweep

They can't hit for beans and cut their backup SS. They need to cut the principal SS too.

Brad, they're not being blown out but are losing close, low-scoring games. The pitching seems to be doing good (Colon is amazing to me, even though he had that one bad game), so there is still hope, especially in the NL East, which is the closest race, top to bottom, in MLB. Plus, Miami has a horseshoe up it's butt at home. They are a different team on the road. Right now, everyone in the NL East has a chance and it looks like it may stay that way. -- Al

Al:

After seeing him pitch yesterday my best guess is that hitters have figured out his gangly/quirky delivery. That has led him to "place" pitches rather than "throw" pitches. Next thing you know everything is in a hitter’s sweet spot and he is getting hammered. To make matters worse he is not eating up any innings. If he can go 10-8 I would be happy but even then those numbers do equate to a $17 mil a year pitcher.

Well, 10-8 would be better than 10-13, especially if he can get the ERA down. With only this year and next on the contract at least SF can get out from under relatively soon. There is always the chance Lincecum can add the necessary additional pitch to make him more effective. Once the opposition figures out the delivery and/or pitch speed drops off it is the pitcher's best course to add another out pitch of the off-speed type. Does Lincecum have any sort of change-up or cutter? I remember his fast-ball but not what else he carries in his repertoire. He's too young and good to be washed up or just a hanger-on. Hope he figures it out. -- Al

Great series for the O's!!!!! Pitching overall was very good against a tough Tampa Bay team, so a 3 game sweep was sweep(t) indeed;)...Sammy

Agreed, if he can keep his ERA low and eat up some innings then it will be easier to swallow. I am not too sure about adding an additional pitch. He does have an off speed pitch but it does not seem to fool anyone. His fastball is his bread and butter but guys are just sitting back on it and teeing off. He is especially susceptible to hitters who are patient so another pitch would help for sure.

The Nats are proving to be a very inconsistent team and thus very frustrating to watch play. They continue to find ways to sabotage themselves. Their vaunted pitching is doing pretty well and the hitting has been adequate. They are, however, a disaster when it comes to fielding. Last night was their 35th game of the season. I watched them commit 3 errors and allow 2 more unearned runs, which wouldn't be more than a bad night for most teams but is proving to be almost normal for this team. They have committed 32 errors and allowed 28 unearned runs in their 35 games, both lead MLB. Easy to see why their record is a so-so 19-16 and they can't get any momentum built up. Close to 22% of the total number of runs allowed by this team have been unearned and there is no reason to believe it will suddenly stop. One thing for sure, no matter how good the pitching or hitting is, no team giving up so many unearned runs is going to be a team in the post season. Matt Williams needs to find a way to stop this bleeding or it will be a long and disappointing season in DC. -- Al

To quote a well known ball player from yesteryear, "Good Grief!", it never seems to stop. Nats booted 2 more tonight to make it 34 errors in 36 games. At least these boots didn't cost them a game, or even any runs. This time it was a boneheaded play by the closer, Soriano, who cut off a throw to the plate in the bottom of the 9th, letting the tying run score, which the Nats then lost in the 10th.:rolleyes2: Jeesh. These guys are playing like they have no clue. -- Al
