Baseball 2014 (2 Viewers)

Ha! I figured to be watching games tonight but they snuck that extra day off in there. Just another day to get in trouble with. Any more than 3 days off and I start to get the shakes. ^&grin -- Al

Extra time to go over my purchases for this weekend at Sierra.

By the way, it should be a great second half of the season. There is talk in the Bay Area that the Giants might be in the market for a closer and/or some more middle relief as the trade deadline approaches.

"Be careful what you wish for.", sure applies to last nights games, the first ones played after the All-Star game, which I had been really looking forward to after that 4 day break. Should have been 5 days, as it turned out. It was a bad night for the Nats and especially the O's. Nats just lost another game where they didn't hit worth a darn, losing 4-2. Pretty typical of their season on the whole. Close but no cigar. The O's, on the other hand, lost the type of game that can break your spirit. First game of a long road trip, the O's were in Oakland. It was a marvelously pitched game by Tillman and the O's went into the bottom of the 9th needing the last 3 outs to secure a 4-2 win. Their usually reliable closer, Zach Britton, came in and promptly gave up not 1, not 2, but 3 straight hits, the last of which was the 3-run homer that lost the game for the O's, 5-4. A real heartbreaker. It is going to be real important to see how the O's react to this in the 2nd game at Oakland tonight. Real important. -- Al

Mets came out of break the same way they went in: winning! Now, it's against the lowly Padres but in past years, they struggled mightily after the break. This is a welcome sign. d'Arnaud is hitting and that's a big deal. They sent him down when he was hitting 180 and in the few weeks he's been back, he's gotten it up to 227.

Hey Brad, I see the angels have probably fixed the closer problem by getting the Padres All-Star closer, Hudson Street, for a group of minor league players. That is a good get. -- Al

Needn't have worried about the O's. They are pros. They threw off the loss and went on. Jumped on the A's starter for 4 runs in the 1st and never looked back in winning game 2 of the series 8-4. O's are still getting good pitching and hitting. They could walk away in the AL East if Toronto or NY stumble at all. -- Al

Unfortunately Halos couldn't capitalize. Street pitched one inning, to get his feet wet, and looked fine.

My vote for the 'best pitcher that no one has heard of' is the Nats Tanner Roark. He was brought up in August of 2013 and in the calender year since then he has gone 16-7 with an ERA of 2.48, the 3rd lowest in MLB over that span, trailing only Kershaw and Greinke amongst starters with enough innings to qualify. He started 2014 as the Nats #5 starter but currently leads the Nats in wins with a 9-6 record. He has been remarkably consistent since being made a starter, something that was not expected from his minor league stats. If Roark had any kind of luck this year (read: consistent offensive support) he should be sitting on a 15-3 record at this point. He has been that good. He has had 4 starts this season where he allowed 1 or fewer earned runs and only has 2 losses and 2 ND's to show for them. He has been a very welcome surprise. -- Al

Not so fast there; the Sox and Rays have both won 7 of their last 10, Yankees have won three in a row; unless the Rays blow it up and trade Price at the deadline or the Sox trade Lester, this race could get very interesting down the stretch.

Unless the Orioles go out and trade for a front line starter, I'm talking a top of the rotation guy, they aren't walking away with anything....................

I know. The stars have to align. I keep waiting for the middling O's starting rotation to collapse but they haven't. They seem to be doing a good enough job keeping the O's competitive and I can't really see how. They have a 10 game winner in Chen but he only has 7 QS in 19 starts, with a 4.21 ERA. I guess run support and the bullpen are the keys and the way Buck handles the staff. Even so, Price would look good with a bird on his hat.:wink2: -- Al

Meanwhile on the West Coast, lol......

The Giants have the easiest schedule in the second half of the season by opposing team winning percentages. The play the Padres and D-Backs a bunch of times. I was riding pretty high about that until one of the local broadcasters pointed out that if they make the playoffs they won't be playing those types of teams. In other words, after winning two recent World Series getting in the playoffs is not enough.

On the Al East, I can't wait to see who wins it. There is something to be said for a division where every team is still in it at the All-Star break. Records aside, that type of competitiveness is great for the fans of the teams involved. It is difficult for me to cheer for any one team as I hope the Sox are in it for George and the O's are in it for Sammy and Al. I will just sit back and watch the race, hoping that one of those two teams wins the division and by some miracle one of them is the wild card.

Jason, think you are right about the AL East needing a miracle to get 2 teams into the playoffs. Looks like both wildcards could be out of the West this year.
The NL has a real shootout in progress with 8 teams within 3 games of each other. There are going to be some good teams with broken hearts when that mess is all over. -- Al

I see the Red Sox just kicked the extra point to make it 14-1{eek3} in the 5th!!!I have said from the beginning of this thread that the AL East will be a dog fight to the end, possibly with all the teams involved, everyone can beat everyone else and I'm sure come late September this is going to be a winner take all in the final day/s, no one is running away it this year...Sammy

Sammy:

It should be a great race from here on out.

My first question should be answered soon, what will the Rays do with Price?

-Jason

Sox win again, 5 in a row, 8 of their last 10, 7 games, out, the kids shall lead them............them and Lester........who's going to look like **** in pinstripes next year by the way..............

Or Dodger Blue

:(

The initial offer the Red Sox made to Lester was low ball to the extreme, insulting actually and he's pitched with a hair across his *** ever since, which means the price goes up each day thanks to their stupidity and foolishness.

They are not a cash strapped small market team, he's helped them win two World Series and is a top of the rotation ace, a horse really.

At this point, I almost hope he walks, Red Sox management, specifically Lucky Larry, are a joke.............

Nats suffered a big injury last night in the win at Colorado. Ryan Zimmerman pulled (or worse) a hammy running to first base. He's out for a while which could be a harbinger of doom for the Nats. With Zimm in the line-up, the Nats are 32-19. Without him they are 23-24. This will be his second stint on the DL this season. If Zimm is out for several weeks, it could be a big problem. Nats had finally started to play up to pre-season expectations and now this. :rolleyes2: I hope someone can step up and pick up the slack. -- Al

And so it starts. Zimm out, Nats lose to Colorado 6-4.:( -- Al
