Baseball 2014 (2 Viewers)

We lose Pineda, Nova, CC, all 1st string starters..If Tanaka has issues, there are not many teams that can lose 4 of 5 starters from the rotation and hope to compete. Thank goodness the East is the Division no one wants to win..Michael
Sure has been up for grabs for most of the season, then Toronto got hot but cooled off, and now Baltimore is beginning to put it together. One thing for sure, someone has to win the division.:wink2: -- Al

Sure is, Chris. In fact, I have a splitting headache because of this series.^&grin -- Al

Flying into BWI tonite, (10 glorious days of vacation!!!!!!!) so will have to catch the highlites at the airport later on, hope the O's can pick up where they left off on Monday :)...Sammy

Thanks Jason, was planning on catching the Yankee/O's series but we will be headed to the Outer Banks NC. Friday morning to do some surf fishing Saturday and off shore fishing Monday, (lots of drinking in between those days)^&grin I'll be there in spirit though, and might be lucky enough to catch up with George from Minutemen in Fredericksburg the following week at a soldier show!!! fishing/soldiers/baseball...can it get any better??:smile2:...Sammy

The Nationals thank the Mets as their victory gives the Nats a share of First.^&cool -- Al
Once again the Nats thank the Mets for thrashing the Braves. Coupled with the Nats win over the O's, this gives the Nats lone possession of First in the NL East.:salute:: -- Al

O's prevail in 11 innings and I wouldn't have thought the 2 Hr's would come from the men who hit them but that is why the O's lineup is so dangerous. The O's 2 biggest power flameouts of the season, Davis and Hardy, come through in the clutch and Machado throws one in for good measure. Heck of an 11th inning. I would have to do some deep digging to find the last time the Nats bullpen got abused like that. If you want to beat the Nats, just get them to extra innings. They are now 2-8. Good game for the O's, both hitting and pitching. Tillman was great but the bullpen was even better. -- Al
Nats pay-back tonight, taking the O's 6-2. Fister handcuffed them while the Nats used the Hr bat tonight, hitting 3. Rubber match tomorrow and then my bi-polar headache will clear up, regardless of who wins.:wink2: -- Al

Don't worry, the offense is heating up; horseface hit two home runs tonight. He's the only guy I know who should get paid in carrots and bales of hay instead of money.

Plus, Lester is a free agent at the end of the year, I'm sure the MFY's will drop a dump truck full of money at his doorstep.

Breaking news; Tanaka to the 15 day DL.................has elbow and forearm pain............ruh roh Scooby Doo.............:(

Talking toy soldiers and baseball with George should make up for missing a few games.

Have a great time, no doubt you deserve it.

Sammy, hope you enjoy your vacation time in Carolina but don't forget to take time for a good, old-fashioned Maryland crab feast. You can't come all the way to Baltimore and not chow down on some Maryland crabs. It's illegal. Hope you get a shot at seeing the O's beat the NYY's. Say 'Hi' to George for me if you get the chance, and don't get sunburned by that Southern sun. ^&grin -- Al

O's are 2 1/2 games in first, even after last night's loss. :smile2:

Sammy, hope you have a great time in the Outer Banks. Used to go there every year for vacation as a kid, before the bridge was built! Had to take a car ferry. Very little development then, very rustic. Stayed in the Nat'l Seashore Park at Buxton. Hope to go back sometime.

Say hello to George for me. Chris

Listening to sports talk radio today here in Boston, they just had a guy on regarding Tanaka and what the speculation is.

He's flying to Seattle for an exam. The guy said what I've been saying about him all along; just a matter of time he'd have arm issues with all those splitters he throws. He throws what, 20%, 25% splitters, your arm takes a beating with splitters and he lives off of that pitch, as do a lot of Japanese pitchers.

I don't know why more MLB teams don't do what the Indians did the other night; jump all over that first pitch fastball he throws 90% of the time. Batter after batter takes that pitch, strike one, then he throws a diet of splitters in the dirt that batters chase time after time.

We'll see what happens.............

If Tanaka's injury is long term, George's favorite team is in trouble. He's been the rock until now and it's hard to survive losing him, Sabbathia and Nova, the latter two being gone for 2014.

Speaking of the Nats and O's, tonight’s game should be a good one with Gonzalez going against Chen. I bad mouthed interleague play earlier in this thread but I have to say that these Nats/O's games have been very compelling.

Sounds like Tanaka is headed for Tommy John; he has a partially torn ligament and they will try rehab for six weeks. If that doesn't work, then it's surgery. Yankees season is probably over.

Ahh, my bi-polar headache has left me. The O's took the rubber game tonight, 4-3. And guess what? The winning run was unearned, a problem which had plagued the Nats earlier this season. The Nats had committed 51 errors in their first 59 games, with an abundance of unearned runs costing them several games. They had gotten out of that rut and had only committed 3 errors over their last 30 games (leading MLB during that run). They also game in season game #90 tonight on a 13 game errorless streak. Well. that went away with the error, only the 4th in the last 31 games, and the unearned run, which I think was the first such run (maybe the 2nd:redface2:) during the 31 game stretch. At any rate, it cost them the game. Tied for first again with Atlanta. The O's are riding the crest and are in 1st place, 3 games up on Toronto. Once again the O's bullpen came through and kept the Nats from coming back and made Chen a 9 game winner. Glad this fratricidal series is over.^&grin -- Al

Dear Milwaukee -

The All-Star break isn't until next week. You seem to have missed that memo. I recommend that you all return from the vacation you've been on for the past week and field a team to play the Cards this weekend. You don't get time off until Monday!

Sincerely,

A disgusted fan

As you said later in the thread, looks like it's long term; six week non surgical rehab first, but TJ surgery is likely, which means he'll be out until after the all star break.

In 2015.

The Yankees have a ton of dough tied up in this guy.

The Sox have waved the white flag, brought up a couple more kids to play left and catch, plus another kid has been thrown into the rotation.

And they won two in a row.

Would be hysterical if they went on a run with the future performing for them now; only the O's and Jays now appear to be standing in their way. Michael was right about the Jays, they soiled themselves after taking over first.

Now the O's are in first; unless they make a deadline move for a front line starter, they can be had too...........might be an interesting couple of months here afterall...........

Hit the nail on the head about the O's rotation, George. Even though they have pitched very well of late, they still are not giving the innings needed or overpowering anyone. The lack of a true ace is a problem. They have one starter that is averaging as many as 6 innings. The other 4 are all 5.1 or 5.2, which just isn't enough. It hasn't been a huge problem because Buck has proved extremely adept at swapping bullpen pitchers between the majors and minors as the need arises, but there are still 71 games to go. The starters as a group have only 37 Quality starts in 91 games, 24th in MLB. This absolutely has to improve. These pitchers have to find a way to get through at least 6 innings and then some. Their leading winner, Chen, is 9-3 with a 4.15 ERA. Not terrible but it hides a lack of ability to eat innings. Chen has started 18 games, yet has only 7 Quality Starts, and has only gone as many as 7 innings 3 times, and averages 5.2 per start. The starters, as a group, have an ERA around 4.10. This needs to come down. The rotation is really the only worry I have for the O's, who are hitting well, fielding well, and have good relief pitching. I just feel that the starting rotation continues to be the potential Achilles Heel. I think Jimmy Palmer can still throw for 5 innings.:rolleyes2: -- Al

I am obviously following the NL WEST where the Giants and Dodgers have made it a 2 team race. However, I also can't get enough of the AL East where everyone, including the Rays have a shot!

I love this game.

As they used to say on Hawaii 5-0, "Amen, bruddah!". ^&grin -- Al
