Baseball 2014 (2 Viewers)

Jason, that is a franchise that has always seemed on the outs. I know they have had some success, but it has been few and far between. I think the franchise might be a little cursed from the word go, what with the very ugly uniform choices that have been made on a regular basis. And then there is the curse of Preston Gomez, the Padres first manager. He yanked a pitcher, Clay Kirby, (a local DC area product, and thus a favorite), who had a no-hitter going in July of 1970. Kirby had thrown 8 innings of no-hit ball, but trailed 1-0 because of control problems. Gomez batted for Kirby in the bottom of the 8th. Thus the no-hit attempt was lost to Kirby. A no-hitter would have done the franchise no end of good, but the opposite happened when Gomez threw away the chance. The Padres lost 99 games that season, and, along with the bad publicity, Gomez doomed the Padres in terms of no-hitters. I think they have 28 0ne-hitters but have never thrown a no-hitter. The Padres franchise has always seemed a bit off center to me. -- Al

Al:

That is a great bit of history that I never knew, thanks for sharing.

As you know from this thread I love baseball. It does not matter who is playing, I can sit and watch whether my team is on or not. But the Padres are tough to watch. They trot down to first on grounders and walk on and off the field in between innings like they are headed to work in a coal mine. Maybe you are right, they are cursed and worse yet, they don't care that they are.

Strasburg, Tillman pitching some good ball into the 5th, one mistake by Strasburg to Cruz is the difference, this whole series is going to be a good one...Sammy

Tillman has really stepped up for this game. Strasburg looks good. Shame someone is going to lose this one. Cruz is a beast. -- Al

Can't believe how evenly matched this duel has been. Each pitcher has gone 7 innings, allowing 2 runs. Tillman has thrown 103 pitches with 67 strikes while Strasburg has thrown 104 pitches with 68 strikes. Stras fanned 9 with 0 walks, Tillman has fanned 6 with 1 walk. Like I said, it's a shame someone is going to lose this game. -- Al

Wow!!! And the hits just keep coming!! O's have gone mad with the long ball tonite, 4-5 hrs, I stopped counting, glad to see the bats break out after Strasburg held them in check...Sammy

O's prevail in 11 innings and I wouldn't have thought the 2 Hr's would come from the men who hit them but that is why the O's lineup is so dangerous. The O's 2 biggest power flameouts of the season, Davis and Hardy, come through in the clutch and Machado throws one in for good measure. Heck of an 11th inning. I would have to do some deep digging to find the last time the Nats bullpen got abused like that. If you want to beat the Nats, just get them to extra innings. They are now 2-8. Good game for the O's, both hitting and pitching. Tillman was great but the bullpen was even better. -- Al

Great game, I am happy for Davis with the hope that it is the start of his turn-around.

Good news, the Giants have only been shut out 3 times this month. Bad news, it is only July 8th.

Anyone got any idea what's up with Justin Verlander? He has been steadily declining for the last 3 seasons, in terms of wins, Innings pitched and ERA, and he's only 31 years old. He used to be a guaranteed 8 inning pitcher, but his last complete game was in 2012, and this year he has gone 8 innings only once, in his second start of the season back in April. I would say he was having a bad year but it is in line with his trend. Is he hurting or is it possible he's burned out? It is a mystery. Cy Young Award winner in 2011 with 24 wins and a 2.40 ERA but has now reached the point of a 7-7 record with a current ERA of 4.96. Anyone? -- Al

Al:

I can't figure it out either but pitchers do decline very rapidly. An injury could be possible, but I tend to think that age and the game itself may be catching up with him.

Jason, MLB history is replete with pitchers declining very rapidly, especially in the earlier years when 30 win seasons and 350-400 innings pitched were not uncommon. One of baseball's all time greats, Christy Mathewson, pitched over 4500 innings in a 14 year stretch, starting in 1900. In 1914 he won 24 games while pitching 312 innings at the age of 33. In 1915 he won 8 games, throwing 186 innings and in 1916 he won 4 games with 64 innings pitched and was done, out of baseball at the age of 35. It happened a lot back then. I just find it odd that Verlander seems to have reached a definite downturn in his abilities with all the care that is taken with today's pitchers. True, he has averaged somewhere around 225 innings a season for his career, but that does not seem excessive. It will be interesting to see if he can right the ship in the second half of the season. -- Al

The Mets are doing to the Braves tonight what Germany did to Brasil.

Al:

Again great facts on Mathewson, thanks for sharing.

Obviously every baseball player's abilities decline, but for some reason I notice it more with pitchers. Furthermore it tends to happen right in the middle of a huge contract which compounds the attention.

Who knows maybe Verlander does turn it around, Lincecum has had a resurgence and if he pitches against the Padres 10 more times he might win the Cy Young Award!

Every pitcher seems to have a team they dominate. It is not without precedent in the Giant organization. Juan Marichal was a Dodger killer, wracking up a lifetime record of 37-18 with a 2.36 ERA in 64 games against the Dodgers. He pitched 10 shutouts against LA. He was 21-4 at home and 16-14 on the road. So there is no reason Timmy L shouldn't own SD.:wink2: -- Al

Hey Al, Nat's vs Orioles, there's a bi-polar game for you. :wink2: GO ORIOLES!! Chris

After his worst start of the season, Tanaka is on the way back to New York for an MRI, reports are he said he felt something that wasn't right, so the Yankees are going to get it checked.

For his and the MFY's sake, it had better be a dead arm situation as if not, that's quite a matzo ball hanging out there.........................{sm2}

We lose Pineda, Nova, CC, all 1st string starters..If Tanaka has issues, there are not many teams that can lose 4 of 5 starters from the rotation and hope to compete. Thank goodness the East is the Division no one wants to win..Michael
