Baseball 2014 (6 Viewers)

Ahh, my bi-polar headache has left me. The O's took the rubber game tonight, 4-3. And guess what? The winning run was unearned, a problem which had plagued the Nats earlier this season. The Nats had committed 51 errors in their first 59 games, with an abundance of unearned runs costing them several games. They had gotten out of that rut and had only committed 3 errors over their last 30 games (leading MLB during that run). They also game in season game #90 tonight on a 13 game errorless streak. Well. that went away with the error, only the 4th in the last 31 games, and the unearned run, which I think was the first such run (maybe the 2nd:redface2:) during the 31 game stretch. At any rate, it cost them the game. Tied for first again with Atlanta. The O's are riding the crest and are in 1st place, 3 games up on Toronto. Once again the O's bullpen came through and kept the Nats from coming back and made Chen a 9 game winner. Glad this fratricidal series is over.^&grin -- Al

Congrats to the O's, did not get to watch any of the series , not broadcast in my area (is "broadcast" still a correct term? this from someone still using a flip phone and projection tv), at least not that I could find.

Regarding your later comments Al, about the O's bullpen lacking a true ace. THat's been their weakness for quite some time, IMO. Chris

Good to know I'm not the sole owner of a flip phone left on the planet..............

Hi Chris, What's a flip phone?:rolleyes2: You are talking to someone who still has a hard-wired land line. Don't own a cell phone or any other of them new-fangled communication devices. Until this past Christmas when my daughter gave me a flat-screen Hi-def TV, my TV was a 1990 circa tube that weighed just short of 2 tons. Change does not come easy to this dinosaur.^&grin And yes, the O's rotation has needed an ace for a long time. I think Mike Mussina was probably the last legitimate one we had. -- Al

Al:

My dad still has a landline from the Ma Bell days and it is indestructible. He will not give it up for anything.

As far as O's and aces, in this day and age good middle relief is almost as important as having an ace. You need 4 guys that give you 5 decent innings who pass it off to great middle relief and you will win tons of games.

Jason, your dad sounds like a smart man, knows a good deal when he has one.:wink2: You are right about the state of pitching. Used to be a bullpen only needed one good long relief man. I wonder how much the MLB rule requiring a starter go 5 innings to qualify for a win has to do with today's pitchers. I mean, what if the rule required only 4 innings, or maybe 6 innings? Maybe a staff of one inning experts is in the future. The starting pitcher would be extinct without the 5 inning rule the way pitchers are handled today. -- Al

Al:

I have no doubt that MLB rule has changed pitching. You see it time and again, a pitcher has 5 great innings, meets his pitch count and is pulled. I know the reasoning behind it but the effect on the game is huge too.

Sammy, I have a nomination for most valuable Oriole, to go along with Cruz and Jones, and his name is Steven Pierce. This guy has come out of nowhere to be the current hottest hitter for the O's. He plays LF and has just grabbed the spot and made it his because of his bat. With 157 Ab's, he is hitting .338, with 10 Hr's, 14 doubles, and 29 RBI's. Within the O's organization, LF has been reserved for Nolan Riemold for years. Problem is, Riemold was never able to stay healthy enough to entrench himself there. From 2010 through 2013, Riemold only played 182 games. He recently finished his latest rehab and was designated for assignment since there is currently nowhere for him to fit on the O's. It appears Riemold's door of opportunity with the O's has shut, at least as long as Pierce continues to play well. Such is baseball. The door shuts for one, opens for another. Pierce has been a very pleasant surprise. -- Al
As to Nolan Riemold, he was picked up by Toronto. He had started off well, hitting .333 in 4 games, with 3 RBI's in 12 AB's, but once again the injury bug has bitten him. Had to leave last night's game with some sort of leg injury. No word on how serious. That guy can't buy a break.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Hey Jason, congratulations to your SF boys for making MLB history today. They were the first team to ever have the pitcher, (Bumgarner), and catcher, (Posey), each hit a grand slam in the same game. And they won. Pretty neat.^&grin^&cool -- Al

Don't look now Oakland but that bus about to run you over are the Angels ^&cool

Al:

Thanks! It is hard to believe that it was the first time that happened, then again pitchers don't hit that many HR's let alone grand slams! The win was important too considering the Dodgers won.

I am a big Bumgarner fan, he quietly goes about his business and consistently has strong outings.

Out here in the West at the All-Star break it is north vs south, LA v The Bay in both divisions. Dodgers, Giants, A's and Angels.

As most of you know I am a huge Giants fan. And most Giant fans don't really have any animosity towards Oakland. With that being said I even admire them. The Dodgers, Angels and Giants all rank in the top 10 of MLB salaries. The Dodgers are #1 at $235 mil, the Angels are#6 at $155mil and the Giants are #7 at $154mil. And the A's? Well, they are #25 at $83mil. Hats off to them for running with the big salaried teams.

That's Billy Beane for you. Say what you will, he puts contenders on the field at bargain basement prices. Gotta love Moneyball. -- Al

Woke up this AM to find that the AL won the All-star game and homefield ad in the WS. I don't think much of that rule. The homefield ad can be a huge advantage and shouldn't be tied to who wins a stupid all-star game where a team's best players will only be on the field for an inning or two. How about something as basic/simple as giving homefield advantage to the team in the WS with the best record. Maybe just pick a starting point and rotate homefield back and forth. Really not that hard to figure out. -- Al

Al:

I couldn't agree with you more. I hope that they get rid of the part of it. Since we already have inter-league play, the team with the best record should get home field advantage.

-Jason

Which is why I am not as big of a baseball fan as I used to be; this is not hard like Al said, give home field to the team with best record, how hard is that?

The reason the All Star game winner gets home field is so the players and managers would take the game more seriously; remember several years ago the game ended in a tie as both teams ran out of players.

To grant the league who wins the All Star game home field is beyond idiotic.

But that's baseball for you, a sport where one league uses the DH and the other does not.

I am waiting for the day that a manager does not sub anyone and just plays the best players the entire game and leaves in a starter for 6+ innings. Afterwards he can say he was doing it so that they would win and get home-field advantage in the World Series for his league.

That might be an all-star game worth watching. Clayton Kershaw throws a complete game no-hitter. Wouldn't MLB love that for an all-star telecast?:rolleyes2:{eek3} But it would be worth watching.^&grin It is only a matter of time. Homefield advantage is too important to treat it otherwise. -- Al

And when did they start having 2 days off after the All-Star game????????????????

Ha! I figured to be watching games tonight but they snuck that extra day off in there. Just another day to get in trouble with. Any more than 3 days off and I start to get the shakes. ^&grin -- Al
