And so it starts. Zimm out, Nats lose to Colorado 6-4.:( -- Al

Tough break (or pull in this case). Don't give up hope yet, Matt Williams is a great manager and he has proven that he can weather the injury storms. The Nats are young, well managed, driven and talented which is a recipe for overcoming adversity.

Jason, thanks for the encouragement. I may seem pessimistic but the record speaks for itself. With Zimmerman they are a winning team, without him, below .500. Maybe someone will step up or maybe Williams will work some magic but the bench has been a weak point so the magic is probably going to have to come from outside the current roster. -- Al

MLB had one of those interesting little bits of trivia occur during last night's game in which Tampa Bay defeated St. Louis 3-0. The starting pitcher for the Rays was Alex Cobb, a 26 year old in his 4th season. He got the win to square his season at 6-6. He also managed to get his first career base hit in 9 career AB's. Now the trivia. Cobb was the first major leaguer with the last name of Cobb to get a base hit since the retirement of a certain Ty Cobb in 1928. No relation of each other, that I know of, but 86 years is a long time for the name of Cobb to finally re-enter the hit column. -- Al

The Giants just missed a sweep of the Phils today, Hudson was the hard luck loser, 2-1. However they are looking strong going into this weekends series with the Dodgers.

O's just played game 6 of their brutal 10 game road trip, encompassing the AL West's best teams. They went to Oakland, played tough but only went 1-2. They went to LA, played the Angels tougher and went 2-1. Last night they beat the Mariners in the opening game of a 4 game series, 4-0. O's have looked real good against these 3 playoff caliber teams. As a matter of fact, their starting pitching is getting better and not fading as I feared it might. The team ERA is now down to 3.81 with the starting pitchers leading the way. The bullpen has been solid all year but now the starters are getting into the act. In recent weeks the O's starters have brought their ERA's down to the point where 4 of the current 5 starters now have sub-4 ERAs and the 5th stands at 4.04. This is drastically better than when all 5 starters had ERAs north of 4, some by healthy margins. O's starters are 4-1 on the road trip and have pitched well enough to be 6-1 with only 2 late game blown saves costing them 2 wins. I really like the way the O's pitchers are going right now. Makes their current 3 game lead more understandable and easier to attribute to good play by the O's, rather than sub-standard play by the AL East. -- Al

The "Substandard play of the East", excuse still allows my Yankees and Georges' Sox a chance to pull it out...Michael

Michael, I still think the most remarkable story in the East is how the NYY's are where they are. They keep finding ways to win from players that come from nowhere. Their latest trade, "Cy" McCarthy, has started 2 games and won them both. With one or two exceptions, I look at their roster and say "Who are these guys?". Just a great story. -- Al

I've said it before but I will say it again, records aside, from top to bottom the AL East is full of intrigue. I follow it very closely despite not having a favorite team in it.

Having just lost 3 of 4 to the Jays, I think it's safe to say despite a brief sign of life where they won 8 out of 10, the Sox have no shot at the Eastern Division title.

Pretty remarkable that they went from worst to first and now back to worst, or close to it.

Yankees and Jays will make it interesting, but at this point, the division is Baltimore's to take.

And you have no idea how much it pains me to say that; the whole Cruz thing annoys me, as does their manager, just don't like that guy, never have, never will.

I don't like smarmy people who think they are the smartest guy in the room, rubs me the wrong way and jerks a knot in my behind.....................

That must make it really difficult reading this forum at times ..... especially if you're sitting. :wink2:^&grin

Hey B, always nice to hear from you.

It used to be difficult at times, 99% positive, then I was introduced to the "ignore" feature; been a walk in the park ever since, makes the whole experience much, much more enjoyable............:wink2:

This thread is one of the safe zones. It is a bunch of even keeled fans who are passionate about their favorite teams but respectful of others.

The funny thing to me is that you would think that a discussion involving sports would bring about great debates and insults. If you want that on this forum you need to go the toy soldier and history sections. Imagine that.

The Giants got destroyed tonight. Lincecum gave up 9 hits and 6 earned runs in 4 and 1/3 innings. Here's hoping that Vogelsong outduels Kershaw tomorrow.

O's pitchers outdueled King Felix last night to win 2-1 in 10 innings. They had shut out Seattle 4-0 the night before, giving them a very nice 5-3 record on this grueling west coast swing. Got to play 2 more in Starbucksland before finally coming home, but the road trip has to be classified as a rousing success so far. Funny thing is, the O's come home on Monday and promptly host the Angels for 3 and Seattle for 3, for a total of 13 straight against the western title contenders. The O's have looked real good coming out of the all-star break. -- Al

The Os have indeed looked good; played Angels tough and took 2 out of 3 from them. I thought the Halos would roll over them {eek3}

Except for a stumble against the lowly Pods, Mets have played well on this trip, taking 3 out of last 4. Looks like Alderson made right decision in getting rid of Ike Davis and keeping Lucas Duda; he hit his 17th HR last night. Meanwhile Ike just continues to blow for Buckos: 5 HRs, 31 RBI, .237 whereas Duda has 53 RBIs and .260.

The Red Sox have traded Jake Peavy to the Giants, no word yet as to who they got in return.

I'd be happy with a bag of balls and a couple of bats.

Thanks for helping the Sox win a WS Jake, flags fly forever and you're a part of that team no matter what.

Hoping now he can help my second favorite MLB team get to and win another World Series............

George:

The Giants need the pitching, and hopefully they can give him some run support.

I was hoping for Price, lol, but I am happy that the Giants are at least trying to shore up the rotation.

I heard he's going Sunday night vs the Dodgers; nice to see he's being thrown right into the fire, sack up Jake and get it done..............

Red Sox lost again yesterday to the Doofin Rays, 2-0.

This has to be the most offensive offense they've ever had, just awful, no power, no speed, no nothing.

This makes it 5 losses in a row.

Short of a 1978 MFY miracle finish, they are done.

With the start of Patriots training camp this week, it's football 24/7 for me from now on.

That's the beauty of Boston sports; one door closes, another one opens.

Will watch the playoffs and pull for the Giants, Tigers, Angels and A's in that order, could care less about any of the other teams involved.

This team went from the disaster of 2011 to last place in 2012 to a WS title in 2013 to last place again in 2014.

Three of last four years have been train wrecks, but the one year resulted in a WS title, so I'll take it considering the nut punches of 72, 74, 78, 86, 88, 90, 99, 99 and 03.

RIP 2014 Boston Red Sox.

As bad as the Sox may be right now, the Rays have been as hot and you can't say they're not contenders in that division; Price isn't going anywhere.
