Chris Davis has been suspended for 25 games. Well, that makes two known drug users on the Os.
What an awful bit of timing this is. Davis isn't hitting for average but he is a big part of their power game. Going to be tough to make up those lost Hr's with a replacement player, not to mention having to find another 3rd baseman. Jeeez. -- Al

I saw that he had used Adderall. I know that drug has been used for ADD but I don't know if athletes are using it to help them focus. I assume that any drug that gives you an advantage is off limits.

It has been a tough 24 hours for the game of baseball. First Stanton takes that pitch to the face and now the Davis suspension.

It is as if MLB will have to start testing any player that is having an above average season, that does not reflect their usual past seasons' production. You could go back to any past deviation to a player's numbers and now suspect them of drug enhancement. It started with all the Arnold Swartzy physiques of the 70s with inflated HR numbers, into present day. Obviously, MLB does not have a handle on the problem as certain players continue to excel beyond their usual means..Time to test everyone now....Michael

Therapeutic doses of Adderall improve cortical network efficiency, resulting in higher performance on working memory tests in all individuals.[11][40] Amphetamine and other ADHD stimulants also improve task saliency (motivation to perform a task) and increase arousal, in turn promoting goal-directed behavior.[11][41][42] Stimulants such as amphetamine can improve performance on difficult and boring tasks,[11][41] and are used by some students as a study and test-taking aid.[43] Based upon studies of self-reported illicit stimulant use, performance-enhancing use, rather than abuse as a recreational drug, is the primary reason that students use stimulants.[Amphetamine is used by some athletes for its psychological and performance-enhancing effects, such as increased stamina and alertness;[45][15] however, its use is prohibited at sporting events regulated by collegiate, national, and international anti-doping agencies.[46][47] In healthy people at oral therapeutic doses, amphetamine has been shown to increase physical strength, acceleration, stamina, and endurance, while reducing reaction time.[45][48][49] Like the psychostimulants methylphenidate and bupropion, amphetamine increases stamina and endurance in humans primarily through reuptake inhibition and effluxion of dopamine in the central nervous system.[48][49] At therapeutic doses, the adverse effects of amphetamine do not impede athletic performance; FROM WIKI........

Seems like it is an enhancer and might be addictive..So much for Davis being the new Babe Ruth.:rolleyes2:..And in a year where HR are down, can one now question the Orioles' HR team numbers? Michael

If Davis was taking Adderol to help him hit, it sure didn't work too well. His power numbers are down by half over last year and his BA is a microscopic .196. It would seem that the O's opponents might want him to keep taking it. The only O that is having an above average year is Cruz and his 39 Hr's aren't that much ahead of some others. Adam Jones' numbers are pretty much right on his career averages. The O's have 4 other guys with 12-16 Hr's, hardly massive numbers.
JJ Hardy's Hr numbers are way below career averages. The O's Hr numbers are hardly suspicious and certainly not way out of line even if MLB is having a down Hr year. -- Al

Al:

Yup, if anything he should have stopped taking Adderol in the hopes that he would start hitting again.

He apparently had an exemption in 2013 but forgot to renew it last year. If true, that's a bad mistake.

Just looked in on the O's starting line up of 2nd game of a double header with the evil Yanks, no Markakis, Wieters, Machado, C. Davis, Hardy:(:(.. but 4-0 Orioles in the 8th!!!:):) when life gives you lemons grab the Vodka and do a couple shots!!...Sammy

That is true, but I'm wondering why it took MLB 140+ games to discover the problem. Do they only test once a year, whenever they get around to it or is the test timing 'controlled' by the union ? -- Al

Sammy, it is another example, as the first game was, of the 'no-name' O's starters continuing excellence. Norris threw 7 shutout innings in the nightcap after Gausman did the same in the opener. -- Al

O's complete the DH sweep, 1-0, 5-0, and have reduced the magic number to 5. -- Al

The Giants won in impressive fashion in the first game of the Dodgers series. The lead is only one game, this time tomorrow the Giants can be tied for first in the NL West.

Couple of thoughts - Can't believe how rapidly and completely the A's have collapsed. What was the best race in baseball is now an 11 game rout as the Angels just continue to win. Seattle has gotten itself into position to pass the A's and take that WC spot. Same in the AL East as the O's have demolished a race that once (before the All-Star break) was open to 3-4 teams. I think SF will catch LA, which considering the LA pitching staff, is quite a feat. I'd like to see KC hang on but I don't think they can. Since their 10 game winning streak a few weeks back, the Nats have stumbled along at 10-10, giving Atlanta an opening to close, but Atlanta hasn't been able to, actually losing ground over that period. Like to see the Brewers get in but they are running out of time and not playing well, a bad combination. Guess I'm most surprised by the huge leads in the AL East, NL East, and AL West, as I had expected dogfights to the end but things really changed since the All-Star break. -- Al

The Crew went in the tank before the All Star break and turned it around. My only hope is that the same is happening again. They have won three in a row and are only a game and a half out of the wildcard. Who knows...

Al:

Great run-down of the current state of all the races. There are so many teams in the mix with lots of baseball left to be played.

Ouch! The Dodgers won by two touchdowns and a field goal last night.

The Giants have to put it behind them and win today.

Looks ugly but not an indicator of the team. 17-0 or 1-0, it is just one loss. The Giants will throw it off as they have all year. They're not going away at this point. -- Al

It's been a good week of baseball for the Nats and a disaster for the Braves. On Monday, Sept.8, the Braves came into DC for a 3 game series, trailing the Nats by 7 games. The Nats magic number at the time was 14. The Braves had the chance to close on the Nats and then go to Texas to beat up on the worst team in baseball to further close the gap. It all went wrong for the Braves. They lost the Nats series 2-1, went to Texas and lost the first 2 games of the series and trail in the third game, 10-1 in the 7th. If that result holds, the Braves will have gone 1-5 over the last 7 days while the Nats went 5-2. The Nats will have added 3.5 games to their lead, making it 10.5 games and reduced the magic number to 4 in the space of 7 games. Yes, it has been a good week for DC baseball. -- Al
