Thanks all. Unfortunately, didn't get to watch it as it was late and wasn't feeling that hot yesterday but I did catch the highlights this morning.

The next big race will be to see which time secures home field throughout the playoffs, Angels or Orioles. With 10 games to go, Angels have a three game lead so it will probably go down to the wire.

Brad:

I hope you are feeling better.

One thing I like about baseball is that even once teams make the playoffs there is still so much to play for, home-field etc. Heck, even the Giants are trying to balance winning the division with setting up the right starter in the event they have to play in the wild-card one off.

Watching Oakland implode is really shocking. They are now 17-28 since August 1. Bad as they have been, the incredible record over the first 100 or so games might still get them to the playoffs. Kind of like watching the '69 Cubs getting run down by the Amazin' Mets.{eek3}:wink2: -- Al

They have a 1 game lead over the Mariners (As lost today) with 10 to go. Mariners play Angels tonight; King Felix vs. the rotating 5th starter so Ms have the advantage. As have three against Phillies, Angels and four against Rangers so theoretically they should be ok. However, they got swept by Rangers so too close to call.

Mariners have a tougher schedule: four against Angels (including tonight), three against Jays and three against Astros.

Up in the air!

Getting even tighter now Brad, Angels lose, O's off so 2 and a half game lead for Angels for home field, interesting series coming up, O's and Red Sox, Angels and Rangers for weekend series then the following series O's/Yanks, Angels/A's which I think will have a big say in who wins home field...Sammy

Those bleepin' Cubs aren't helping slow down the Dodgers any, either to SF's advantage or the Nat's attempt to get HFA for the playoffs. Cubs blew a 7th inning lead and the game last night and today gave the Dodgers a 6 run head start in the 1st inning of the game currently in progress. AND Kershaw is pitching for the Dodgers. I'd say that the game is over already except the Cubs are making noise in the bottom of the 1st and are slapping Kershaw around a little bit. -- Al

Ugh, in the 7th inning it is still a two possession game with LA leading 14-3.

It looks like Kershaw will be the first 20 game winner this year.

The Angels decided to celebrate winning a berth by losing two out of three; last night's lineup had the scrubeenies. Home field advantage in baseball is not that big a deal but I will be out in California visiting my son when the ALCS starts and as he's a big Angels fan, I'd like to take him to a game. Things have been tough for him lately and this would be a good pick me up.

Jason, thanks for the thoughts the other day.

Just a little info on how the O's made the AL East race a runaway; in the last 16 games, the O's starting pitchers have an ERA of 1.69. You can't win if you can't score. :wink2: -- Al

Wow, that's pretty amazing {eek3}

Nats are just a little behind the O's with the starters being at a 1.76 ERA over the last 12 games. Nats also just had their consecutive road games with a Hr streak stopped at 22. It was the second longest such streak since 1900, trailing only the 1996 O's at 24 games. -- Al

The Dodgers lose but the Giants fail to capitalize with a loss to San Diego. We won't get too many more chances at it so I hope a little desperation starts to set in or the upcoming series with the Dodgers might be meaningless.

Looks like things are just about settled in the NL and short of any collapses in the last week, you've got the Nationals, Cardinals, Dodgers in, plus the Giants playing the Pirates in the wild card play in game, with the winner playing the Nationals, while the Dodgers play the Cardinals; I'm hoping for Giants/Dodgers in the NLCS.

In the AL, wild card is still up for grabs with the Mariners, A's and Royals all fighting for two spots, while the Orioles, Tigers and Angels are all in.

I think it will be Royals/Mariners in the play in game with the winner getting the Angels and the Tigers playing the Orioles; I think the winner of that series get the Angels, I'm thinking Tigers/Angels in the ALCS.

For the WS, my heart tells me Giants/Tigers, my head tells me Nationals/Angels.

Interesting stat this AM. The Nats just took over first place in MLB as the pitching staff with the lowest ERA, 3.03. Not bad in this day and age. The average in the NL is 3.67. In 1968, the NL ERA, as a whole, was 2.99. The Nats, whose pitchers have been having good but unspectacular years, currently have 4 starters in the top 16 of the NL. No one else has more than 2. The O's are currently in 7th place, overall in MLB, with an ERA of 3.44, which is good enough for 3rd place in the AL. Here again, good but unspectacular years. An interesting aspect of the O's starters is that they rank 25th overall in the QS category. They are getting short but effective starts, and then the excellent bullpen finishes the game.
Here's hoping that all this good pitching carries over through the playoffs and results in a WS slot for at least one, but hopefully both, of them.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

Rough day all around for me. The Niners lost (more on that in the NFL thread), the Giant lost/the Dodgers won and I might not be able to make it to Chicago.

Furthermore, if the wildcard were held today the Giants would play at Pittsburg.

The Wildcard races continue to be close but are pretty much done at this point. SF need win only 1 of their last 5 games or the Brewers lose 1 and the NL is all locked up. The AL is pretty much done also, with only the Central Division title still up in the air, thus leaving the question of who the champ/wildcard will be, either Detroit or KC. The teams seem to be locked with only Seattle still having a shot to crack the WC, but their loss last night pretty well killed them. They are 3 games out with only 5 left. Not impossible but pretty much DOA. Congratulations to all the teams that have made it to the playoffs after a long season. -- Al

Angels magic number is three to clinch home field.

Yankees have two games to go at Yankee Stadium. The Captain's two last games in the Bronx. How will he go out (not that anything he does will affect his status.

In his entire big league career, he never played on a losing team and they missed the playoffs only three times. That's pretty impressive.

We'll see if the Yankees will try to win the last two for him. Tomorrow's game may be rained out. Theoretically, that could have an effect on the home field advantage question.

Seattle is pulling the Big Gaak. Fighting for the the WC, they have gone 5-12, and lost the last 5 in a row. Way to go. -- Al

Phil Hughes, ex-NYY pitcher, has gone 16-10 for the Twins this year but the remarkable part of this is he has set the major-league record for strikeout to walk ration. He struck out 186 batters while walking only 16 (that's right, sixteen) batters in 209.2 innings this season. That works out to a 11.63 to 1 ratio. Absolutely amazing. This record is for those with enough qualified innings (162) as opposed to relief pitchers who might have better ratios but not enough innings to qualify, such as Dennis Eckersley in '89 and '90 when he had 18 to 1 ratios. -- Al
