I thought he benched him because he had struck out seven or eight times in his previous nine or ten at bats. If you're not even making contact, what choice did he have. I'm sure Puig wasn't too happy. The only similar situation that I can remember was when Davey Johnson took out Strawberry in the late stages of game 6 of the 1986 World Series. Strawberry wasn't too happy but then hit a monster HR in game 7 to seal the deal.

Thanks for reminding me of what a wonderful slice of heaven that 86 series was.............

That's the only moment we've had in almost 30 years. At least, you've had three titles in 10 years.

Brad

If the Cardinals can get back to the WS this year and win it, they are the new gold standard; in the past ten years, that would give them 3 titles and 5 trips to the WS, not to mention the run they are on now of four strait trips to the NLCS.

Regardless of how this turns out, they are a model franchise; beautiful ballpark, passionate, loyal, non band wagon fan base, continually developing home grown talent and hiring good managers one after the other.............we'll see how it plays out.

Congrats Jason and the Giants, I'm pulling for a Halloween theme World Series, black and Orange that is^&grin...Sammy

Sammy:

Thanks!

I hope that the O's and Giants meet in the World Series too, although much like playing Al's Nats, it will be sad that someone has to lose.

It would also be a replay of the Ravens/Niners recent Super Bowl. Maybe the lights will go out in game one?

Seriously, best of luck to the O's against the Royals.

-Jason

Nats got beaten by a better ball team in terms of managing and execution. That's the way it goes in baseball and especially in a short series where every miscue and failure is magnified. When you hit .164, as the Nats did, there is no room for crying. I do think that Williams got outmanaged, or rather, made a couple of crucial errors in regards to his pitching. The first mistake being the removal of Zimmermann in Game 2 when Zimm had dominated the Giants and needed just one out to finish. Granted, that is one of those moves that is a winner if it works or makes you look bad if it doesn't. The other specific error Williams made was in the deciding Game 4 when Williams had a rookie right-hander on the mound (Barrett) in the crucial 7th inning. With runners on, Williams chose the rookie over his 'lights out' righties Clippard, Storen, or even Stammen. The result was a wild pitch by Barrett that cost the Nats the game, and season. I guess rookie managers will make mistakes just like rookie players. Long winter to think about it. -- Al

In the regular season maybe. Not in an elimination game in the playoffs. You have to go with your big dogs. Puig is going to bust out sooner or later. Mattingly probably thought he was teaching him some old school lesson thinking Kershaw would shut the Cards down but instead they are all on vacation. If they think Puig can't help them in this situation they should trade him.

If nothing else, the playoffs so far have showed that managing in game 140 on a Tuesday night vs the Cubs is a lot different than game 4 of the NLDS, managing in the playoffs is big boy pants time, no doubt about it.

As far as last night; why didn't Williams go with Strasburg to start the 7th and ride him for all he was worth, I don't get it.

And again, Bochy won the series, but why put his rookie reliever on the mound to face Harper in a 2-1 ballgame, Harper had already crushed one earlier in the series off of him, that was a real head scratcher.

And sorry, all I heard all year was Trout, Trout, Trout; give me Harper any day of the week and twice on Sunday, he was incredible in that series, almost won it for the Expos on his own......................

George, you make an excellent point about Strasburg, and it is a question being asked on the local sports shows. Williams said Strasburg would be used in Game 4 only for emergencies. Well, a tie game in the 7th inning of an elimination game kind of fits that definition, doesn't it?:rolleyes2: The questions about Williams and his handling of the bullpen during the series will go on all winter. There is virtually no excuse to have a rookie pitcher in the game at that point, with 2 runners on and the entire season in the balance. Williams had, at least, 4 better options and everyone now wants to know why he didn't use one of those options. Harper did come through in the clutch. Harper had half the Nats RBI's for the series. He and Rendon were the only offensive threats the Nats had. Credit SF pitching. -- Al

Al,
The announcers said it in the pregame that if Gonzalez is shaky, Strasburg will be first on deck, or, he'd be a bridge to the closer if needed as well; turned out he was neither.

Again, managing in the playoffs is a whole other animal, just ask Grady Little, who left Pedro in in the 8th inning of game 7 of the 2003 ALCS when he was cooked and Timlin was ready to go; all year long, it was Timlin in the 8th, Williamson in the 9th, but Grady had feet of clay and left Pedro in, the MFY's tied it up leading to Aaron @#$%ing Boone's home run to win it in extra innings, .176 hitting Aaron @#$%ing Boone till that point in the series at that.............playoff baseball, where heros and goats are born.............

You forgot to give Grady his middle name: it's Grady Bleeping Little

Ho-Hum, advancing further in the playoffs, this is getting so old! I have to admit I did watch the last few innings yesterday. As some of you know I gave up on baseball about 15 years ago. I tried not watching and rooting due to my general principles but I couldn;t help myself.
I think the person on the Cardinals that doesn,t get the praise is the GM John Mozeliak. Seems no matter what the situation he makes the right moves.
Who is the commentator with Joe Buck on Fox? Will somebody shut him up, he makes Tim McCarver look like a mute.

Glad to see how swept up in the moment you are...................:wink2:

Considering the Blues haven't won the cup in............well, ever and the Rams look like they'd have trouble with my B level Pop Warner team, you'd better go along for the Cardinals ride as you've got one heck of a team there in St Louis........................

How about when Arod got benched in the Tigers playoffs by Girardi? Michael

Interesting side note, since 2004 the Red Sox have won 3 World Series, the Giants 2 and the Cards 2. So in the last ten years those three franchises have 7 of the 10 rings.

Awesome, my three favorite teams; keep the train rolling and win another one this year Giants/Cardinals.............

A little birdie landed on my balcony this AM and told me that this is the year of the O-R-I-O-L-E. Go Birds!^&grin^&grin^&grin -- Al

What's the word Al?? or better yet what's the weather like in Baltimore today?? I heard of storms/rain today in the East, hope it blows out before the game...Sammy

We're expecting rain here in the Mid-Atlantic around 5PM tonight, then off and on into tomorrow morning around 10 or so.

Go Royals, go Redbirds!

Prost!
Brad
