Maybe he should buy a toupe with some brains in it......
I'm still willing to bit a bit patient with all this. I am a bit disturbed by the tendency to these very slow starts. Being 8 games back in April may not be a disaster in itself, but it is a slippery slope. Williams, after being handed a winning hand with this team last year, blew the big moves in the playoffs and so far this season has not exhibited an ability to come up with the answers, yet. Of course, all my angst and doubt goes away with a 22-3 run.:rolleyes2: I'm afraid, as hot as the Mets are, that another 20 games like the first 20 games will bury the Nats. Perhaps a hot hitter or two with that toupee full of brains would help some... -- Al

I assume management is thinking the Mets will cool off, Nats will play better and the margin will be reduced. As much a fan as I am, I have to agree that they have to cool off; they've been playing at a torrid pace that even the most diehard fan could never have anticipated.

So they are closing the Baltimore game to the public tomorrow due to the rioting. Playing the game, but not allowing anyone to attend. That's a new one. Playing in an empty stadium shouldn't be much different from playing the Marlins in Florida though.

I heard they closed the stadium for a time Saturday while the rioting was going on, ie, not letting the people who attended the game out in the middle of a riot.

Seems like a pretty idiotic move if it's true.

The rioting is still going on? It started Saturday.

I don't know exactly what MLB is thinking here with this 'no fans' call in the O's game, except that MLB doesn't want to fall behind on the schedule. It makes no real sense to play Game 3 of the series in this way after postponing the first 2 games. MLB could have moved the whole series to DC as the Nats are on the road anyway and the whole problem would have been solved. Plenty of fans from B-more would have followed the few miles down the road and there are still a lot of O's fans in the DC suburbs. As to the fans not being let out of the stadium the other night, it wasn't a big deal as the game wasn't over while the major part of the disturbances were occurring. By the time the whole thing became a story, the game ended and the disturbances had subsided for the evening and the fans then left like normal. Very few fans were ever stopped from leaving. After all, B-more isn't LA and O's fans usually don't leave after the 7th inning. -- Al

Nats getting pounded, behind 9-2 after 2 innings. I'm on the way to losing all respect for Williams as a manager. Nats brought up a rookie to start tonight's game when they had a more than viable option in the bullpen in the form of last year 15 game winner Tanner Roark. Someone thought that starting a rookie was a good idea for this team in the middle of a losing streak. Wrong. Not only did the kid get pounded, early and often, but Williams was apparently caught by surprise by the onslaught as he had no one up in the bullpen when it all went south in the 2nd inning, leaving the rookie out there a lot longer than was necessary. All the signs for a possible early departure were in place in the 1st inning so when the 2nd started out with 2 consecutive hits, the bullpen should have been up. That poor kid gave up 7 runs in the 2nd and 9 overall, once again with the help of sloppy fielding, as only 4 of the 9 were earned. This team is in almost total disarray. -- Al
And who comes out of the bullpen? Roark, who should have started in the first place. Jeez, what a mess.

And that is why they play 9 innings. Nats hung in and won the game 13-12 on a 9th inning 3-run Hr by, of all people, ex-Brave Dan Uggla, his first Hr of the season. As John Lennon said, "Instant Karma's gonna get you." and it got the Braves. Biggest comeback in Nats history. I truly hope that this unique game can be the springboard to this team waking up and fulfilling the pre-season predictions. What a game, from 9-1 down after 2 (my mistake in the above post, it was not 9-2 after 2), to a 13-12 win and against Grille at that, who had been lights out until tonight. A salute to the Nats for not throwing in the towel on this one, despite the disaster of the first 2 innings. :salute:: -- Al

In one of those number oddities that occurs in baseball, SF beat LA 2-1 last night. Bumgarner was the WP, now with a 2-1 record. The LP was Kershaw, now 1-2. And they both now have ERA's of 3.73. Fun with numbers. -- Al

Its not karma. Its baseball. There is no crying, or throwing in the towel, at the professional level. Hefty paychecks prohibit it.

Reports have the Os tonight's game moved to some time today (to avoid curfew violations). No fans will be in attendance. WOnder if the game will be televised in an empty stadium? Chris

Chris, the O's channel on local cable (masn1) is covering the game, listed as a 12:30 start time. MLB has it listed @ 2:05. Don't know which is right so I'll tune in early. First time in MLB history that this 'no fans' thing has been done. -- Al

I only meant Karma in the sense that it was former Braves player Uggla that won the game for the Nats. It's amazing how many times players come back to bite their former teams. I'm waiting to see what Markakis does to the O's when they play in July.:wink2: -- Al

I guess the State of Maryland and the City of Baltimore do not have the combined resources to secure one stadium for 3 hrs. :rolleyes2: Chris

Maybe the powers that be should have offered the tickets to the rioters. Could have cleared the streets for a while anyway. -- Al

Or they could fill the seats with cardboard cutouts of people like Charles Grodin did at his parties in "The Lonely Guy."

The O's have an 8-2 lead in the 7th. Maybe they should ban fans for the rest of the season. :wink2: Chris

They did win 8-2 but even more impressive than the win was the time in which the game was played, at 2:03 minutes it is one of the fastest 9 inning games I've ever watched. Maybe you have something there, Chris. Ban the fans! With no one to perform for, all the teams can do is play. {sm3} -- Al

Well the Nats finally have some momentum going. Second night in a row with 15 hits, 13 runs, and a 9th inning 3-run Hr. Took the Brave 13-4 tonight. First time in franchise history (including the Expos) that the team has scored 13 runs in consecutive games. Now we go to NY to face the 1st place Mets. I hope we can maintain this momentum for a while, but the Mets rotation is not the Braves rotation. We shall see. -- Al

Yes, but Mets are on the way to losing 4 out of 6 so everything is in a state of flux.

Al:

I also saw that Uggla is the highest paid player on the Braves roster, they are paying almost all of his $13mil+ salary for him to play for the Nats.

Ouch.
